Who is BU - transferring money online

My son is buying a car privately. He has transferred the money through online banking but it has not yet appeared in the sellers account as is being processed. The seller can see the transaction in my son’s account as sent to the correct account . A sample £10 sent appeared after one hour so he can see the money is being sent to the correct account
He won’t release the car until the money is in his account, but from my sons perspective the money has been paid to his account and he can’t get it back now even if he wanted to, so won’t leave without the car.
Seller is chasing with his bank but apparently it could take all day (why I have no idea).
Would you release the car or is he being reasonable to make my son wait?

I work for a dealership and we wont let a car go until the money has cleared our account. I get badgered by salesmen all day, asking to check if money has arrived , it can take hours.

kaytee87 · 02/11/2017 12:26

I wouldn’t release the car if I was the seller. Surely your son can wait another day?

Oblomov17 · 02/11/2017 12:32

Should be in, in a few hours. Sometimes takes up to 3 hours. Probably in by now. Worth son phoning at say 1pm or 2pm?

My daughter bought a car recently and was advised by the salesman to make sure the money cleared their account before she wanted to get the car ie Paid Wednesday, in their account Friday as cleared funds , car collected Saturday.

Hi thanks everyone, very clear vote for the seller being right to wait.
Turns out that my sons bank was at fault. They told him at 9 that it was cleared through the fraud dept and the money had gone, but he then got a call from fraud at 12 asking him questions and it appeared that the money hadn’t gone at all but was being held by the fraud dept.
Once that was done, the money arrived with the seller in a few minutes.
So, all sorted, but all quite stressful and although he’s got a cheaper deal privately, it’s a lot more hassle than through a garage.
Happy boy now though, thanks for all the advice

Happy boy now

How old is he? He must be a man if he has a driving license.

bruffin · 04/11/2017 08:05

Minervan, why the snippy comment
He may be only 17, either way he is still Ops boy. My frends all haves sons in their late teens early 20s,
They are still our boys!

I know it's all sorted now, but what he's actually done is replicated a week known "theft of account details" scam - I also replicated by mistake and got my card blocked whilst abroad. The scammers will gain account/card details, then send a "test" amount that's not unusual (e.g. £5/£10 purchase) then if/when that goes through they will process a much larger purchase (in my case, I wasn't 100% sure the cash machine was going to spot the money out so tried a £5 withdrawal followed by a £50 withdrawal. The bank allowed the first but fraud department stopped the second). Just something for others to be aware of...
