To overtake on motorway left hand lane?

DP says I am. But I hate when you are on a busy motorway, and someone is sitting in the middle lane, and will not move to the left hand lane, even though it is empty. While at the same time the right hand lane is packed with cars, making it hard to pull out into the right hand lane and still leave decent distances. So I have occasionally just overtaken the middle lane hogger in the left hand lane. I know the Highway Code says you should not, but sometimes it seems the safest option.

Er you can't purposely undertake... Yes you can. If there is an accident ahead sometimes the left lane moves faster than the other two lanes. The left lane has to move even if the other two have stopped. it's common sense.

NerrSnerr · 01/11/2017 12:40

Sorry something I didn’t explain properly. If lane one is going 10mph and lane 2 is at a standstill then you can drive faster than the person in lane 2 but you can’t undertake in free flowing traffic.

GunnyHighway · 01/11/2017 12:42

Amazing or maybe scary how many people are certain that they're right when clearly you can't all be.

Migraleve · 01/11/2017 12:46

So you are not able to answer me Migraleve?

I could. I have however decided not to waste my time.

Christmastree43 · 01/11/2017 12:50

I had a scary incident on the M1 a couple of weeks ago. I pulled into middle lane to overtake so was obviously going faster than the lorry in the ‘slow’ lane.

Idiot boy racer zooms into middle lane from far lane to undertake someone around the same time.

Because of his blind spot, the speed he was going and because I’d sped up when crossing into the middle lane, he comes so close to me it felt like he almost clipped me and the car rocked with the speed of his passing me.

It was absolutely terrifying even more so as I had a child sat next to me, I knew the dangers of undertaking but after that I really understand it

I posted this info as a direct quote from a police website about 200 posts ago, and said I wasn't sure if it was helpful information. Clearly it wasn't as (a) poster are still having to repeat it and (b) others are still saying they are wrong! Still, at least I've learnt something and am happy to admit I didn't know that previously (although I still don't undertake as its FUCKING DANGEROUS).

Cinnamon12345 · 01/11/2017 12:56

I always drive on the inside lane unless I need to overtake. If someone is hogging the middle lane ( which is also an offence) I just carry on where I am..

FlowerPot1234 · 01/11/2017 13:01

NerrSnerr

It’s shocking how many people don’t know how to fucking drive.
Yes, it is. Hmm

If you’re driving 70 in the 1st lane and someone is doing 50 in the middle lane you still need to overtake!!

No, that is not factually true. You are permitted to pass on the inside.

You can undertake if there is very heavy traffic.
No, you are never permitted to undertake.

So much stupidity.
Er yes..

I could. I have however decided not to waste my time.

So you waste your time posting numerous false posts stating factually incorrect rules of the road, but when I point out your fabrications and ask you specifically where you are getting your information from, suddenly you can't be bothered?

Go on Migraleve, humour us. Answer my question. You said that Passing on the inside is permitted in certain circumstances. Not when there is a middle lane hogger?*

What rule states that?

NerrSnerr · 01/11/2017 13:07

I did not explain clearly. The photo is from Highway Code. It says you should only pass on the left in congested conditions.

Good. That is exactly what every driver should be doing too. Every lane that is not Lane 1 is an overtaking lane.

If someone is hogging the middle lane ( which is also an offence) I just carry on where I am..
Good too. You are driving absolutely correctly.

sayyouwill · 01/11/2017 13:09

Flash them until the get the message and/or wait for the right lane to clear up

DillyDally15 · 01/11/2017 13:12

I remember just after passing my test, there was a middle lane hogger going at about 50mph and my turn off was a couple of junctions away. I did the right thing and overtook in the right hand lane. I went to move back to the middle lane in front of Mr Hog and the arsehole then decided to increase his speed to the national speed limit and move into the left hand lane where I had started. He then wouldn't let me in front of him despite indicating early enough. I find this quite common of men tbh. After the incident the bastard proceeded to follow myself and my infant son into a shop car park to have and argument with me. There's a person right there who needs to retake his test. I could have lamped him one!

DillyDally15 · 01/11/2017 13:16

I also couldn't go in behind him because of the situation he had caused a back up of cars behind him not wanting to overtake him so close to their junction. When he pulled in to the left it meant I only had space to go in front of him otherwise I would have missed my turn off. I'm still raging now years on! I need to move on.Blush

flower stop being a GF.

If you are so convinced you are right and I am wrong why do we need to continue?

Grow up.

FlowerPot1234 · 01/11/2017 13:24

Migraleve

Because you started our conversation by replying to my post and incorrectly stating it was wrong. It's not.
Because you then proceeded in a very childish, and rather rude manner to evade answering my question asking where you got your incorrect information.
Because you are spreading false and completely made--up information on this board about driving rules on motorways. This is dangerous.

Fine, you can't admit you are wrong and for some strange reason you don't want to abide by the laws of the road. But don't dress it up as something it isn't.

Lethaldrizzle · 01/11/2017 13:30

Say you will - you shouldn't flash them . You all sound very impatient

Jojopugh · 01/11/2017 13:31

I would definatley do this if flashing my lights and papping the horn with a few finger pointing gestures to the left hadn’t worked 😂😂

Migraleve · 01/11/2017 13:32

But don't dress it up as something it isn't.

Away and have a cup of tea or something, calm yourself down a bit.

I’m not interested in banging my head agains t the proverbial wall.

Hope you're interested in this then, have a read. Better still, keep a copy on you in the car, it might stop you crashing into walls.

RaeCJ82 · 01/11/2017 13:46

I cannot stand people who hog the middle lane or right hand lane if it’s a two lane motorway. What is so difficult with keeping left unless overtaking? Whilst undertaking is dangerous, I can understand when people get so frustrated by this that they do undertake, especially on a two lane motorway.

Lethaldrizzle · 01/11/2017 14:01

Maybe just leave home earlier?!

FlowerPot1234 · 01/11/2017 14:03

Lethaldrizzle
Maybe just leave home earlier?!

Confused What's that got to do with dangerous driving?

RaeCJ82 · 01/11/2017 14:09

People should realise that by hogging the middle lane they are driving dangerously because they are making people around them react to their bad driving by undertaking, or trying to get into a busy third lane.
It’s the same as people who have no idea about speed limits. Single lane, national speed limit road is 60mph, yet people drive at 30. Yes it’s a limit not a target, but driving that slowly is dangerous.

Lethaldrizzle · 01/11/2017 14:13

Flower pot - because then all the pps on here who seem really stressed about getting somewhere really fast can just chill out a bit and not get angry on the motorway - which lets face it - is bad for everyone
