To worry that my baby is too sleepy?

DS is 6 weeks old and seems to be asleep the vast majority of the time. Today, for example, he got up at 7 with me, was awake until 9 then slept until 12.30. He tried going back to sleep when I fed him then but was woken by the dog barking so was awake until 3 but then fell asleep until 5. We went trick or treating at 6 until 8.30 and he slept through it all, he only just woke and is now falling back to sleep while feeding. He wakes every 2-3 hours to feed during the night. I'm sure I remember my other children being awake more by this age. AIBU to be a bit worried that he's so sleepy?

Sounds normal. Two hours is a long time for a new born to be awake.

Bue · 31/10/2017 21:43

Sounds normal to me! Some babies just sleep more than others, I also have a sleepy 6 week old. If waking to feed and otherwise well and gaining, I'd just be grateful.

Closetlibrarian · 31/10/2017 21:43

I thought they could still only be awake for 30-60 mins at a time at this age? I can't remember exactly, but I'm sure that mine took ages to be able to stay awake for long stints.

MrTrebus · 31/10/2017 21:45

Aww sounds brilliant stop worrying!! I miss my sleepy newborn! A 6 month old doesn't nap enough for me now, I need some time for a cup of tea but DD just doesn't want to stop playing.

Silverthorn · 31/10/2017 21:49

Naw. Relish the peace and quiet.

HottySnanky · 31/10/2017 21:49

Ahhh I remember this... DD2 slept 20 hours a day for the first six weeks of her life. We barely knew she was in the house - she'd wake to feed but was very efficient, slurp slurp snore, very content baby, it was lovely.
Now she is two and likes to stomp loudly into my room at 5.50am shouting WAKE UP MUMMY IT'S MORNING TIME.

TathitiPete · 31/10/2017 21:51

He's probably absolutely fine l, definitely some babies sleep more than others. I've only two DC but the difference in their sleeping requirements is immense. I would say something to your health visitor or, if you don't see your HV very often, maybe make an appointment with your GP and ask if your DS should have his iron levels checked.

Like I said your DS is most likely absolutely fine but my DS has a rare anemia so I know I would err on the side of caution and just rule it out.

RogerThatOver · 31/10/2017 21:51

Google said he should be awake between 8-10 hours in 24. He's probably awake for 4 at most - desperately hoping I'm not jinxing myself and in for a sleepless night now Wink

google is wrong.

Make the most of it.

It doesn't last long!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 31/10/2017 21:56

DD was a sleepy baby, mainly on her dad if she could.

FellOutOfBed2wice · 31/10/2017 21:59

My eldest slept solidly for two weeks and then she was AWAKE and didn’t we know about it (and is still the same 3.5 years later. She stopped napping at all at a year). Her younger sister in contrast, slept for 18 hours a day until she was a good 4-5months old. I took her to the GP I was so worried..... and they just laughed at me and said she was a baby! She still sleeps a lot now (is nearly 14 months) and is grouchy if she doesn’t get a leisurely 2hrs afternoon nap to accompany the 14hrs or sleep she does at night!!

Primulas · 31/10/2017 22:04

I recently had this exact conversation about DS, who is now 6 months. I didn’t remember his brother sleeping so much, and I had the same moment when I googled too! Needless to say, he’s grown through it now and starting to have more distinct ‘naps’ rather than just being asleep when he wasn’t eating!

ememem84 · 31/10/2017 22:06

I have a 5 weeker.

Today he’s slept from around 830 to 11. Then from 12 to 130 (when I woke him up to change and put outside clothes on) then from 2 to 330 (feed and change) then from 5 to 8. And is now asleep again. I’m expecting him to wake around midnight/1

He was awake all day on Sunday. But he’s had a cold and Sunday was the worst day. He just would not settle. So we just held him. And cried.

Itsanicehotel · 31/10/2017 22:06

DGD could manage an hour and a half between naps till she was about 2 months old. Unlike her mother as a baby who barely slept in the day from the off.

I find this useful

AMagdalena · 31/10/2017 22:11

Sounds like bliss to me.
DD has been fighting sleep since day 1. It's like she was born to do just that.

mousemoose · 31/10/2017 22:27

I hear you amagdalena. OP I am so jealous.

RogerThatOver · 31/10/2017 22:47

I think with 4 siblings, 3 dogs and a constantly busy mum he's exhausted just watching it all and sleeping on behalf of the rest of us Grin

I had one of my DC at midnight, she gulped a feed down, I was taken to the ward then was woken up at 8am by a midwife saying you know you have been asleep all night and the baby hasn't been fed, I said did I not hear her she said no she hasn't woke up either. I woke her up fed her and went home an hour later. She was so lazy compared to the other 2 who would have smaller feeds then wake up every couple of hours. Shes 9 now always last up for school, has to be shaken awake and has a lie in every weekend. I hardly knew I had her when she was a baby, she would have a huge feed then be out for the count for hours.
