To not understand how doing food shopping daily is more expensive than weekly/monthly

I have always shopped daily, I prefer it as I like to chose what we are eating on the day. I find we have left waste and it's generally more enjoyable.

We have 1 DD and another on the way, so in terms of convenience this may change in the future, however many people common on how expensive doing it like that is and I just don't get it!

I buy exactly what we need, and whatever isn't used on the day will be used on a following day. Of there are deals I will still stock up occasionally.

Is this really true?

I thinks it's factoring travel and time that people comment on.
But I find when we do daily shops instead of weekly it gets expensive as we pick up extra things every time we go shopping. Plus if I meal plan for the whole week then I can buy things that will get used across several meals like a bag of peppers or potatoes.
If it works for you then don't let anyone change you.

Well I guess if you buy in bulk things work out cheaper.

I end up doing maybe 3 weekly shops a month and the 4th week I just naturally end up with stuff I've frozen, cupboard meals etc. weekly shop anywhere between £40 and £100 (me, DH, DS1 (DS2 arriving on Monday)).

Petrol costs? If you have to drive to the shop.

Because you typically end up buying more- it's far easier to grab stuff you don't need if your there every day

Trills · 31/10/2017 11:01

It's not if you buy the exact same stuff.

But if you're shopping weekly you're much more likely to be planning your meals ahead of time.

Planning => knowing how you're going to use up half bags of spinach => not buying a new vegetables for every meal and having half of everything go slimy in the bottom of the fridge.

There's no reason why it has to be more expensive if you are sensible. In fact it could be less expensive as you might waste less. On the other hand, if you don't shop every day I think you tend to have more " make do" inexpensive meals. I leave one day a week unplanned and just use up what I can find.

That's not why I shop weekly though. Shopping every day would take me far, far too much time. I spend about 15 mins doing an online weekly shop. 10 mins unpacking. Job done.

OP, do you work outside the home? How do you afford the time and faff?

I could do it when I was single, working ft and doing a combination of eating late in the office and buying back on my way home. I could not shop daily when I have a home to run on top of working ft or close to ft.

A few examples. If I buy turkey for myself and my son it costs 2.50 for enough for 1 meal. If I buy the bigger pack I can split and freeze enough for 4 meals, it costs £5.50. Same with mince, I could pay £2.50 for one meal but I don't I buy the bigger pack at £4 and split it into 3 meals. Makes sense to me.
