Anyone else have a writing 'callus' or 'bump' on their writing hand?

I've had a raised bit of hard skin on the inside bit of my middle finger for absolutely ages - ever since I learned how to write. I'm left-handed, if that makes any difference.

Has anyone else got one?

I do. I think I probably do more hand writing these days than most people I know, but it's nothing like in school/uni/proper letters days. I suspect I would physically struggle to get through a three hour essay exam these days, I'd really need to build up my hand and wrist muscles for that.

As I'm not expecting to do any 3 hour exams, so I am not intending to do anything about this.

MrsUnderwood · 30/10/2017 12:25

Yeah, I’m a leftie too and it’s on my middle finger. I still do quite a lot of hand writing so it’s never really receded.

PickleFish · 30/10/2017 12:29

yes, a massive one on my middle finger - but it has reduced somewhat now that I don't write as much by hand. Definitely still there, though, and has changed the shape of my finger. It gets in the way of some musical instruments!

I discovered in adulthood that I was hypermobile, and I had always held the pen oddly, and with a lot of pressure, as a result. I was shown a new way to hold the pen to reduce the pressure, and it really helps - if I'd learned that way as a child, I might not have developed it (Monk's/D'Nealian/adapted grip)

ChuckysLoveChild · 30/10/2017 12:30

Yep!

spankhurst · 30/10/2017 12:31

Yes, in fact the cuticle is pulled into an odd shape because the bump is so big.

MustBeThursday · 30/10/2017 12:38

Glumglowworm me too. Never noticed it until my teens that other people held pens differently to me. My fingernail on my ring finger looks slightly lopsided too on my writing hand from where the pen sits.

Oblomov17 · 30/10/2017 12:42

Yes. Big bump on my middle finger. but not much atm, no longer, because I mainly type. But when I was at uni, and when I was doing my accountancy papers, it was huge.
I thought it was quite normal.

RangeTesKopeks · 30/10/2017 12:57

Is it a maybe leftie thing then? I'm really curious why some people have it and some don't! Thought it was much less common than it seems to be though - feel like I've found my people :)

Writing with a fountain pen seems to be a good idea. I also really like the Papermate pens you can get from Ryman. They saved me during my finals!!

I still have bad memories from school exams in summer if I had to write loads and it was really hot - my callous would be sooo painful!!

Yes, on the middle finger of my right hand. It was worse at school but it's definitely still there (I'm 27 now).

Cacti · 30/10/2017 13:07

Yes, left handed but like LegendofBeans, mines on my third finger!

Not as noticeable as it used to be though.

NewMinouMinou · 30/10/2017 20:37

Yup. I’ve had one since the age of eight or do. It’s got a bit smaller in recent years.
Genuinely snorted at “spod’s lump”!

AnyFucker · 30/10/2017 20:39

Yes. Am right handed

I use to pick it and make it bleed. Nice.

LordBuckley · 30/10/2017 20:56

I used to have one when I was at school (also left-handed), but it eventually disappeared. I hardly hand-write anything these days.

JustHereForThePooStories · 30/10/2017 20:58

Yup!

Also have a dent on inner side of my small finger on my right hand, from balancing my mobile phone on it as a browse.

ScipioAfricanus · 30/10/2017 21:01

Did anyone else colour theirs in with their fountain pen? Or was that just me...

Scholes34 · 30/10/2017 21:01

Yep. Got one of those, plus lots of lovely calluses from rowing (in a boat, not with my DH).

munchkinmaster · 30/10/2017 21:01

My callus on my first finger has gone these days but I still have a dent in my middle finger and the skin round my nail pulled down

Anyone else have a writing 'callus' or 'bump' on their writing hand?
WhooooAmI24601 · 30/10/2017 21:04

Yep, I teach though so do a huge amount of writing each day.

Freshprincess · 30/10/2017 21:07

Yes on my middle finger and I'm right handed. We used to use fountain pens at school so don't think they make a difference.

It's Nothing like as big as when I was at school, but I can still tell it's there. My nail on that finger doesn't quite grow as straight as the others.

Eilasor · 30/10/2017 21:20

I have one from writing and another on my little finger from holding my phone too much..

DixieFlatline · 30/10/2017 21:24

Ring finger, right hand. It was bright red on the way home yesterday because I had been writing almost non-stop for about 7.5 hours. I once cut most of it off with a pair of nail clippers. I managed to make it a lot smaller, but got down to some rather tender pink skin and thought I'd be better stopping...

Auldspinster · 30/10/2017 21:24

Yeah. I have one on the left side of the middle finger of my right hand.

SomeBananasAreStillGreen · 30/10/2017 21:25

I've just checked, and mine has gone completely. It used to be enormous when I was at university, and sometimes painful, especially during exam season.

I'm 45, and haven't written much more than shopping lists by hand for many years now. I'm sure it was still there when I was 35.

Freshprincess · 30/10/2017 22:24

Dixie - that just reminded me of the time I tried to file mine down with my mum's metal nail file. It was not a success.
