To ask how much you spend on groceries a week?

We’re a family of four and I’m concerned we’re spending too much on groceries per week (around £100), just interested to know how much you would consider too much?

That’s not 4l of orange juice by the way, just one bottle (1 litre!)

Ours averages out at around £100 per week for 5 of us. We tend to have a few weeks of £120 shops then a few of 70-80 ones where the cupboards and freezer are already stocked from the more expensive weeks

QuopQuop · 30/10/2017 12:58

We are vegetarian so I buy a lot of fresh stuff, I average out at about £110 a week. Some being £90 some £120 depending on if we need big things like washing powder etc. We also only have bottled water so this costs an extra £5ish a week.

ezzeroo · 30/10/2017 12:59

£60 averaged out weekly for a family of 2 adults and 1 teen boy. No pets or dietary restrictions. I buy own brand, and DS and DH get free lunches at college/work. Doesn't include toiletries/skincare as we get those elsewhere.

CountDuckulaTheSqueaky · 30/10/2017 12:59

£140.

phoenix1973 · 30/10/2017 13:03

Family of 3 plus cat. Between 26 and 44 quid.

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 30/10/2017 13:09

DH does the food shopping. He spends about £100.
I usually need to top up mid week for milk, bread and kids break-time snacks.
Back when I did it, my record was £44. I guess DH got fed up of lentils and frozen meat and took matters into his own hands Grin

bebanjo · 30/10/2017 13:10

Yesterday I spent £74 in Morrisons.
For 2 adults and 1 10 year old.
We have meat every night.
I could drop it down to about £50 but we like what we like and it's not a problem.

Oly5 · 30/10/2017 13:15

£150pw, our fruit and veg bill alone is at least £60

bluechameleon · 30/10/2017 13:15

Family of 3 here. Spend £50-60 on Tesco shop (that's with a 10% staff discount). Doesn't include 8 x lunches for work, plus we have a takeaway most weeks and eat out a couple of times a week. We are OK for money at the moment so happy with this spending, but will need to cut down when I go on maternity leave on the new year.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 30/10/2017 13:20

When our dc were at hone it was about £150 pw for 4 adults and two cats. Ds2 went off to uni last month and food bills have dropped to about £50 for dh, me and the cats. That incudes all toiletries etc but not alcohol as dh buys that separately. Also we buy most meat from our local butcher which comes to.about another £25 per fortnight.

I'm sure we could cut our food bill if we needed to but luckily we don't and we like good food.

MyWhatICallNameChange · 30/10/2017 13:55

Between £80 - £100 for 6 of us. Me, 5 dc's from 18 - 10, and 2 cats.

I menu plan each week, so I know exactly what to buy, then add in stuff for lunch and breakfast, cleaning stuff and cat food.

I shop in Morrisons, I've found them the cheapest. Plus they have really good reductions sometimes (pizzas for 35p each! We had a pizza feast!)

user1487175389 · 30/10/2017 14:02

About £90 per week for 4.

I'd like it to be less though

BitchQueen90 · 30/10/2017 14:22

Just me and 4yo DS at home. I spend about £60 a week including toiletries and cleaning products. I'm sure I could spend less but I had to survive on £20 a week for groceries for a year when I was 19 and when I got a better job I resolved that I would never scrimp on food again. I can afford it now.

noeffingidea · 30/10/2017 15:05

Between £30-40, for my 17 year old daughter and myself. Daughter gets free school meals, which obviously helps.

FruitCider · 30/10/2017 15:08

£85 a week from Tesco, that includes Cat food and litter (£20 a week), usually £15 on alcohol. We change brands of butter etc dependant on what’s on offer but never try and limit the amount of money we spend.

purpleprincess24 · 30/10/2017 15:23

Four adults around £200 pw

That includes most toiletries but not the dog food

I also do a Costco run prob every three months, which tends to be around £500

HateHomework · 30/10/2017 15:25

Family of 4, including 2 young kids around 200 a week but we re bloody gluten and dairy free which costs a fortune ...

TiredBefuddledRose · 30/10/2017 18:20

We average out about £110 a week for a family of 4 (1 adult, a teenager and 7yr old twins), we're all vegetarian.

That amount includes cleaning stuff, most toiletries, stuff for the cat and a few bits and bobs for the foodbank.
I also always buy a few bits for the larder at home, we could probably eat for at least 2 weeks with what's in there (obviously I rotate it so it doesn't go out of date), I hate the idea of having no money for whatever reason and having no food.
It also includes made a couple of dozen sandwiches for a homeless group we volunteer with.

I try to meal plan but it doesn't always work out that way.

Fresh fruit and veg are a large part of our shopping bill.

In less well off times I've got it down to about £50.

Would probably be less if I stopped buying olives!

rowtheboats · 30/10/2017 23:53

It does seem to vary quite a lot then! Thank you for sharing everyone :)
