To phone in sick for a leaky radiator?

My employee has just done this....

Are they BU?

They've been with me for 1 month. They've already had time off for an illness, plus associated doc appointments, and also a funeral.

This morning I was told (not asked) they would be staying home to wait for repair man. No apology.

How bad can it be that they need the day off?

Would you think they aren't really bothered about keeping the job?

Put it down as unpaid leave and either extend or don't pass their probation. You'd be shown the door in our place for that attendance record in probation period.

Oh Gawd I bet they are one of those "tax credit merchants". You know, the ones who sign up for any old job doing 16 hours a week so that they can claim the real prize of child tax credits/working tax credits/free prescriptions/housing benefit/council tax reduction etc etc and then ring in sick all the time.

Sack while they are still on probation, its easier.

Can you clarify about the ringing in sick bit? Do you mean they have followed the usual company policy for calling in sick but they are not sick, they have just assumed it would be acceptable to use this method for an urgent leave absence? Do they need to follow another process? did they actually say they wanted sick leave for that absence or unpaid leave or holiday pay?

It's simple, when they return tomorrow tell them what your policy is then deduct the day from their leave allowance. That's what the rest of us do when we need to arrange access for a repair or a delivery.

Sorry just reread the original post.

Nah finish them - didn't realise they had already been off three times.

NameChangeFamousFolk · 30/10/2017 09:48

It sounds as though they don't give a shit about the job, the company, or how it impacts on you, no.

Squarerouteofsquirrel · 30/10/2017 09:52

They’ve either been very unlucky in such a short space of time, or they’re taking the piss. The only way to find out is to discuss it with them when they get back.

Also if they are young, or they’ve been out if the work place for a while they might not understand the finer nuances of sick leave, versus unpaid leave, surely who ever took the phone call should have stated at the time that it wasn’t sick leave, they would have to use their holiday allowance or unpaid leave.

disahsterdahling · 30/10/2017 09:55

They could be in a panic about the radiator. None of us

I know it sounds awful but it is possible to be ill in the early days of a new job. I was sick on day two of a new job once, I was mortified.

And you can't do much about a funeral.

I think a lot of the comments on here are quite unfair, but I would have a word when the employee returns to work about proper processes and leave.

If they get bolshy and are not apologetic, that's the moment when you perhaps consider letting them go.

disahsterdahling · 30/10/2017 09:56

Sorry I meant to type none of us know how bad the leak is.
