To LOVE Halloween?!

🎃 🎃 🎃
I just love it, I love the slight chill in the air at that time of year, the excitement of dressing up, Dd always gets really creative with what costume she's going to wear and we usually spend a while planning something really cool to do, like go on a ghost walk, or to hear ghost stories somewhere like English heritage.
The few times we've done trickle treating we've really felt like we've seen a different side of the community, one time of year that residents will unselfishly give sweets and spend the evening running to and from the front door. I love it.

Yesterday we had a Halloween party, so much fun. Our house has pumpkins, those flickering electric tea lights, skeletons, Halloween bunting and the like everywhere.

I feel so excited by this time of year.....

Anyone else?

I love it. I've always loved supernatural stuff. Even more fun now dd can go trick or treating.

lionsleepstonight · 30/10/2017 13:19

What I love, is once Halloween is over we then go straight to CHRISTMAS!!

OneGreyElephantBalancing · 30/10/2017 18:26

I bloody hate it. Everyone around is doing tones of stuff with their kids -parties pumpkins in fields, fright nights, the works. I cannot muster any interest.

I don’t understand why it’s ok to dress children in a disguise and send them to a strangers door.

Surely arriving unannounced isn’t ok these days anyway ? Does one need to text ahead to trick or treat ?

clarkyclarkson · 30/10/2017 18:35

OP it’s TRICK OR TREATING NOT TRICKLE TREATING Hmm

MrsK · 30/10/2017 18:42

I love Halloween too, even though I’ve got older teenagers who aren’t into it anymore. I spent hours carving a my Pumpkin masterpiece last night & I’m doing my neighbours at the moment.

I’ve decorated the porch & have a cauldron full of sweets (with mechanical grabbing hand) ready & waiting 🕸🎃👻

Lindylove14 · 30/10/2017 18:51

I hate it.

  1. I hate the environmental waste - all those “use once” plastic decorations and outfits that have no worth come 1st Nov and then get thrown away. And the waste of sweets - more than any child will ever eat. It’s obscene in its excess.
  2. I hate the really gory costumes - I just don’t think it’s in good taste to emulate someone who has had half his face blown off. American Halloween is far more “anything goes” costume wise and I think that’s much better.
  3. I hate that it’s completely overtaken a brilliant autumn festival that’s been celebrated in England for the last 400 years - when was the last time you saw a Penny for the Guy?
ReanimatedSGB · 30/10/2017 18:59

I love it too. So far DS and I have been on a spooky walk (on Saturday evening) which was a local 'find the stars and moons and witches hanging from the trees', we spend yesterday at one of the heritage railways riding their 'ghost train' and tomorrow night we will have a bucket of sweets, carve a pumpkin and have pumpkin pasta for tea. DS is 13 but still loves it, so I am making the most of it in case he decides its uncool next year.

MsJamesDeanBradfield · 30/10/2017 19:04

Do you mean trick or treating?

Givemeallthechocolate · 30/10/2017 19:15

No everyone, I meant trickle treating. I know the difference. I just cannot get it into my head when saying it.

Plus trickle treating makes just a bit more sense.
I don't think I ever had a trick whilst trick(le) or treating... and trickle treating sort of makes sense, if you think that you get treats in a trickle... bit by bit. I know. I've given much thought to making my nonsense almost plausible. I've had a few years to tell both DH and MIL my reasoning behind it being trickle treating instead of trick or treating Halloween Grin

Lindy

  1. we keep our decorations and add to them when we see something we like. I have a big box full of them. We just jig them around each year.

  2. I dont care what kids dress up in as long as its something and they do their 'turn'.

  3. its been around far longer than 5th Nov bonfire night. Blame health and safety for the decline in bonfires.

LapinR0se · 30/10/2017 19:21

Then you need to write “trickle treating” or trickle treating (sic) otherwise all you’re going to get is people saying IT’S TRICK OR TREATING

taratill · 30/10/2017 19:24

I hate it, over commercialised American nonsense.
Awful.

Givemeallthechocolate · 30/10/2017 19:26

Thank LapinRose "trickle treating" Halloween GrinHalloween SmileHaloween SadHalloween Wink sorry I just wanted to use the witches because I saw them and it's Halloweeeen tomorrow. So excited!

And before any one says it I know 'old hallows' is not an American concept. It's the gaudy commercialisation and the plastic tat that I particularly object to.

And the fact that it scares old people and young children (and any other children with sensory issues).

You can stay away from bonfires if you don't like them. You can't stay away from hordes of kids knocking on your door demanding sweets.

Paddingtonthebear · 30/10/2017 19:27

I don’t like it/get it. I don’t know why. We never did trick or treating as a kid. I’m 41 and I don’t really think it was a popular thing when I was young. There was apple bobbing I think but that was about it. My mum wouldn’t have let us knock on doors anyway.

My 5yr has shown interest this year for the first time but I’m not convinced she wouldn’t find people in masks scary as she always has done so far. We’ve bought her a toy pumpkin lantern that lights up but I’m not going to take her out knocking on doors now or any other year. I just don’t like the idea. Our road is absolutely full of decorations already. We are going out tomorrow night for dinner to hopefully avoid people ringing our doorbell incessantly. Taking the dog too Grin

Givemeallthechocolate · 30/10/2017 19:28

If it makes anyone feel any better, I will also be setting a guy alight on the 5th November. Not a real guy... but I'm going to try and make one! Smile that is also a very good celebration of sorts!

I love Halloween! I just came back from LA today and the decorations on houses there are amazing! Grin

I totally decorate my house and my kids love it :)

I just gave my daughter a Halloween themed party and she's got the bug too luckily!

Givemeallthechocolate · 30/10/2017 19:30

Paddington bear- that sounds a great idea! You know English Heritage do a lot of Halloween events, they're really good, few spooky stories and it's only young kids who are in costume usually.

Givemeallthechocolate · 30/10/2017 19:32

Mary poppins- please tell me about LA Halloween!?!?

We're doing Disney next year for Haploween, its been an almost life long dream!

I love Halloween too!

Today me and my babies carved some pumpkins, Well my dc are only 1& 2 so the oldest sort of ‘helped’ scoop the seeds out he loved it!

Tomorrow we are going to the toddlers Halloween party in the village hall, dd will be a pumpkin, ds a skeleton, me a witch. I have made ghost shaped gingerbread, witches hat shaped brownies to take and will make some bat shaped sandwiches tomorrow to take to.

I’m the evening we will have pumpkin pie, Dh will watch a scary film with me and I will hand out my sweetie gloves to the trick or treaters that coming calling

We did Disney Florida for Halloween two years ago, Mickeys not so scary Halloween is amazing, trick or treating around the park, brilliant boo to you parade and characters you don't usually see out... then Halloween horror nights at universal is terrifying!! I got chased with a chainsaw Confused

LA was just Halloween everywhere! Every shop, every house.. super decorated! And we did not so scary Halloween at Disney there too, and Knotts scary farm! You should go!

RavenWings · 30/10/2017 19:49

Love it. Only ever seen hatred of it on here. Must be a cultural difference or something.

It's much better than Christmas imo! Now, there's some over commercialised shite that drags on way too long... still like it tho
