AIBU to really hate religion?

My 5 year old great niece is very upset right now,
She was given a fairy door- small wooden one that sticks on the bottom of a skirting board.
My sister- very religious has seen it in her room, ripped it off and broken it telling the child that Satan will come through and it is an evil trap.
I am trying to be respectful of my sister's religion but it is hard.

LoniceraJaponica Halloween is absolutely off the menu.

Nope, OP said she didn't give her the door.

But OP also said her Baptist sister was sprinkling holy water (not a thing if she is a Baptist of any kind, even the batshit kind) plus once the 'schools which teach creationism in the UK don't get funding' argument was established has revealed that it is not a UK school (or an American one), but they do have 'Social Services'

It is also a country that has skirting boards (a British turn of phrase), speaks English, has yoghurt and 'LA' used in the context of a school, Local Authority being another UK thing....curiouser and curiouser as they say (down under them bridges...), this story developing more holes than swiss cheese!!

speakout · 30/10/2017 15:24

moomoo222 I can assure you this is a real story.

And I don't know what system they have for SS or LA, but as a Western country I assume they have similar agencies.

missyB1 · 30/10/2017 15:27

Perhaps the OP could clear things up by just saying which Country this is happening in?

speakout · 30/10/2017 15:28

I don't see why that is important.

OP posts:
ShatnersWig · 30/10/2017 15:29

How old is your sister, OP?

magpiemischief · 30/10/2017 15:30

So, Op, how will you handle this, apart from complaining on here?

CoolCarrie · 30/10/2017 15:34

Poor wee girl, what a bitch her auntie is!

Bombardier25966 · 30/10/2017 15:38

I'm picturing Jacob Rees Mogg in a skirt.

(Yes, I know he's not a baptist, but he's an arsehole who uses his faith to justify being am arsehole.)

ShatnersWig · 30/10/2017 15:42

OP, I am confused. Can you a few things up for me?

You say upthread I don't really care if people choose to call themselves Pagan which is an odd thing to say bearing in mind you yourself are a Pagan, so why not actually say "As a Pagan myself, I don't really care..."

You say on another thread that you were completely alone for a couple of Christmases after your husband died. Where were your mother (who is now 85) and your sister then?

You've also said on another thread that your mother is passive aggressive and slags you off to her church friends. But you put up with it because there is no other family. So where is your sister in all this?

You've also said on another thread that you view religion as mental illness.

steff13 · 30/10/2017 15:43

BackforGood but if that is the case how come I have 8 loopy family members?

It's not unheard of; the members of Westboro Baptist Church are almost exclusively members of one family.

moomoo222 · 30/10/2017 15:43

OP that would be helpful as currently your story seems wildly implausible and I imagine will be derailed by that entirely. On the off chance that there is some truth in this it would probably make more sense to understand where it is taking place. Or is there actually not a country that has all of the elements listed above?

ShatnersWig · 30/10/2017 15:45

In fact, where were ANY of the 8 loopy family members for those couple of Christmases after your husband died? Have you been shunned by them through this religion? Seems unlikely, bearing in mind you have contact with your mother, who is part of this religion.

speakout · 30/10/2017 15:49

Abroad.

I don't see why (which Country this is happening in) is important

Well, I for one would be interested to know which "western country" is likely to have a 1,000 place Baptist school which encourages the teaching of creationism ... after all it's not as if it would identify the people concerned

There are some very wise posters on this (international) site, and maybe some could be best placed to help if they understood something of the national/cultural background?

ShatnersWig · 30/10/2017 15:52

And the Pagan thing?

See, you've been incredibly open and upfront about things on plenty of other threads (I've barely scratched the surface on this) so why are you so reticent to answer something as innocuous as which country this is?

olliegarchy99 · 30/10/2017 15:54

YABU - to hate religion.
YANBU to dislike the extremists of all religions
Remember many people find comfort and spiritual help through belief in a religion.
They are not hurting you or trying to convert you - that is the extremists way.

speakout · 30/10/2017 15:54

I have done nothing to warrant these personal attacks and suggestions of being a troll.

I will leave this thread now. Thanks to all who made positive contributions.

missyB1 · 30/10/2017 15:57

Come on OP why the secrecy about the Country? It’s important in terms of providing a background to your story.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/10/2017 16:07

Two of OP's posts from different threads ... a little surprising, perhaps?

Make believe Santa and imagination is always part of the christmas magic in our family

my family won''t have christmas tree (too pagan). No Santa or Easter eggs ( ditto) ... My 5 year old grand nephew has had a class in school explaining how Santa and Satan are the same person ...

speakout · 30/10/2017 16:09

Puzzledandpissedoff

Both these statements are true.

Believe it or not but my extended family members live in several different homes.

We are odd like that.

OP posts:
Noimbrianfromhull · 30/10/2017 16:12

Oh you didn't leave then.

BackBoiler · 30/10/2017 16:15

I went to a Halloween funfair last night with the kids and right next to the illusionist's stage there was a man preaching about burning in hell, sinners etc on a microphone. He made me feel like sinning myself!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/10/2017 16:21

my extended family members live in several different homes

I don't doubt it, but considering your sister's reaction to a tiny skirting board door, I'd have thought she'd self immolate over an abomination like a whacking great Christmas tree Wink

And what happens if someone inadvertently doorknocks her on Halloween? A deranged lady answering the door wielding an axe might help with the festive theme, but I can't quite see the police being impressed ...

Littlebelina · 30/10/2017 16:43

Are you in the UK op and your sister's family abroad? How did you find out about the fairy door incident? If your sister is telling you openly about this I would be concerned about what she is not telling you
