To cook chicken that isn't fully defrosted?

LuckyAmy1986 · 25/10/2017 15:59

Got the chicken (breasts) out of the freezer around 6.30am yesterday morning. They still aren't fully defrosted! I imagine they would need another 6+ hours. If I cook them on 200C for an hour will they be ok? And then they are going into a sauce so will be cooked a little then too. Thanks!

Are they defrosted enough to chop up?

I'd be tempted to chop up and cook but I'm pretty lax.

Aquamarine1029 · 25/10/2017 16:01

I think they will be fine, especially since they are going into a sauce.

LuckyAmy1986 · 25/10/2017 16:01

Yes I was able to slide the knife into them (I though piercing them would help the middle) They were icy on top.

I cook chicken from frozen all the time, including a full chicken, with no issues

notquitegrownup2 · 25/10/2017 16:07

Defrost in microwave? Or put them in a plastic bag, in a bowl of luke warm water, and massage/waggle them to defrost. The aim is so that when you cook them, the meat inside, which will be the most frozen, should be thawed and so get up to a high temperature, when cooking.

dementedpixie · 25/10/2017 16:07

Defrost them on the worktop and put in fridge once defrosted. I never defrost in the fridge as it takes too long

BexleyRae · 25/10/2017 16:10

I often cook partly frozen chicken and mince, but if DP asks i tell him it was fully defrosted. He's weird about this sort of thing

LurkingQuietly · 25/10/2017 16:13

Do it all the time, OP. Never had a problem. Just makes sure it's piping hot in the middle and you'll be fine!

MrsJayy · 25/10/2017 16:13

Oh god do people really cook frozenchicken please don't just chop it up leave it on a plate to defrost fully. I am agog at how hardcore these mumsnetters are Shock

M5tothesouthwest · 25/10/2017 16:15

Yes it’s fine as long as it still gets hot enough for long enough in the middle. Take it out half way through cooking to chop it up a bit and cook for a little longer than you would normally.

spidey66 · 25/10/2017 16:15

I often do and with mince too. I've got to the ripe old age of 51 with no major illnesses, but having said that I've the constiuition of an ox.

LuckyAmy1986 · 25/10/2017 16:15

Ok thanks for all the replies. Seems like the majority say go for it, so I will ha! Sorry MrsJayy it's just gone in the oven!!

LuckyAmy1986 · 25/10/2017 16:16

If it was mince I wouldn't think twice. It's just chicken, I don't know, it scares me!

I'd run them under warm water, then cook in oven in foil with some oil for around half an hour. I think 1 hour would dry them out to billyo.

SistersOfPercy · 25/10/2017 16:24

This is why I love my pressure cooker. Frozen chicken breasts, 12 minutes (about 20 to cooker in total)
But yeah, go for it!

TroysMammy · 25/10/2017 16:25

I've got a metal defrosting plate. I pour boiling water over it (don't think you are supposed to) and place frozen items on it, I cover it in cling film first so no cleaning. It defrosts food, especially things like chicken breasts and prawns really quickly. I've had it years and wouldn't be without it. You can get similar on Amazon.

MrsJayy · 25/10/2017 16:26

Well Amy on yer own head be it Grin i do cook frozen mince though but frozen chicken makes me feel a bit queay.

trinitybleu · 25/10/2017 16:27

It'll be fine. I buy the cook from frozen chicken Smile

Mulch · 25/10/2017 16:27

I do this all the time, chop up and cook in pan, once it's cooked it's cooked

Mulch · 25/10/2017 16:28

And I've survived to tell the tale

MrsJayy · 25/10/2017 16:29

Oh I have a metal defrosting plate i bought it in Woolies in the dark ages i defrost most things on it

2old2beamum · 25/10/2017 16:29

Totally agree with MrsJayy but I am very fussy.

LuckyAmy1986 · 25/10/2017 16:31

Oh great, didn't know there was such thing as a defrosting plate, I will look into it

badtime · 25/10/2017 16:36

There is nothing inherently bad about cooking any meat from frozen. As long as the meat is cooked through, it makes no difference to the risks of food poisoning.

The microbes in the chicken don't know if it's been cooked from frozen, FFS.
