People who take offence when you decline their request

I am a writer and have been asked to donate some of my books, free of charge, to a local fundraiser.

The funds being raised are going towards repairing a historic clock in my town.

I have no interest in the clock and can’t afford to give away my books.

I have politely declined and the organiser has taken offence.

Am I being mean?

If the clock brought in a lot of tourism and increased the sales of your book then yes I would try to donate. I would just tell the organiser that you have already donated your book to other friends things.

Sugar, yes it's food - not cakes though.

Okay so I'm kind of relieved it's not just me this happens to.

I've been very clear with DC school that I can donate my time to help with things but I can't give away our products. Despite me organising one very large event for the school each year (it raises over £5,000 each time) the PTA chair has this week told me I've out her in an 'awkward position' & she doesn't want to 'fall out with me' Confused

AgathaMystery that is so rude! You would think she would be bloody grateful that you organise a large, money-spinning event every year when so few parents want to help out!

greendale17 · 26/10/2017 20:13

but I have a limited number of free books my publisher gave me to give to friends etc.

So do you sell the free books then?

Since it hasn’t cost you anything I don’t see why you wouldn’t donate some for a bit of free advertising

Tinksee · 26/10/2017 20:42

Green - I sell the books that I buy from my publisher or give them away to friends.

There is NO money in poetry and this woman wants a freebie that will cost me money.

As for the publicity - unfortunately, there is no publicity in this particular event.

And I have long run out of free copies. So, every time I give a book away, it costs me money.

I don’t mind giving free copies to my friends, but not to some random woman who wants to take advantage.
