To think no you don't look gorgeous with silly dog ears, a silly dog nose and a massive fake tongue

Stepdaughter is 14. Every few days she posts on Facebook what looks like the same photo with the dog ears and nose and huge tongue. After which she gets 50 or so identical comments saying how gorgeous she looks. But you can't see her. All you can see is the ears etc. It was fun the first few times but I just don't get it. I know it's the thing at the moment but a local girl to me went missing a few months ago and her parents struggled to find a photo of her as she wouldn't let them take any and all she had were the daft Snapchat ones with the ears etc.

I am officially old and am going to need to hide her posts aren't I? I know I definitely did daft things at 14, thankfully without the internet to record it all, but all.these almost daily photos are nearly exactly the same and it's getting so boring Confused

I agree with you witch. It's not quite as simple as some people would like to make out.

witchofzog · 23/10/2017 22:22

The post was supposed to be light hearted. Because it is hard not to look silly when you have dog ears etc coming out of your head. But of course it does mask an underlying issue. Thankfully the girl was found safe and well. She had been hiding at a friend's house. But if she had been missing for longer no-one could really see what she actually looked like. The photo her parents found was of her aged around 10 or 11. She looked very different at 14 or 15 so the police also distributed the snap chat photo.

I just meant that 14 year old girls are often bitch to each other and are not confident about how they look. If your SD is posting pictures with a filter I would guess it makes her feel less exposed on social media as it doesn't really look like her.

brownmouse · 23/10/2017 22:30

Gawd yes they are all mad

What next? Looking like a sea lion?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 23/10/2017 22:31

Perhaps she self identifies as a dog? Hopefully she'll grow out of it. Wink

coconuttella · 23/10/2017 22:33

She’s 14 not 40 ffs

speakout · 23/10/2017 22:35

Just a 14 year old having fun.

Can't see it's annoying.

TequilaLemonSalt · 23/10/2017 22:39

My 2yo DD's favourite game is being a dog/ cat/ having a big mouth etc. on snapchat. Obviously the worst Mum ever Hmm

LemonysSnicket · 23/10/2017 22:39

They’re popular because they disguise the nose which makes the face more symmetrical and then make the eyes bigger.

I am 22 and hate the fucking thing so it’s not you getting old ... it just makes girls want to hide parts of their face all the time.

sunandmoonshine · 23/10/2017 22:41

I think they are cute and funny, and me and my family have done a few.

HOWEVER, we have only posted about 10 pics between us (with snapchat pics on,) in 2 years. So like one every 3-4 months or so. Too many and it will get old and boring quick.

I still think the original post is spiteful and mean though. How nasty, bitching about your 14 year old step daughter. Hmm

Bit jealous of her popularity are you @witchofzog ? Or just jealous of her in general?

Spiteful and mean? Have you read the whole thread sunandmoon? I stand by what I said. They look daft. But I have also expressed concern about how they are used at this age. Why would I be jealous? I would never want to be 14 in this day and age. Too much pressure. Way more than you and I probably had.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 23/10/2017 22:50

You're calling the OP Spiteful SunShine? Read your own post Hmm

All step mothers aren't bitter jealous old bags like in children's story books. Of course it's daft to pose in dog ears on Facebook, OP's right, it is silly to do it everyday but teens are a bit silly sometimes.

You're reading far too much into a lighthearted moan.

sunandmoonshine · 23/10/2017 22:52

@Ilostitintheearlynineties

All step mothers aren't bitter jealous old bags like in children's story books.

I never said they bloody were!

Fucking hell! Calm the fuck down.

And YOUR post is spiteful too. Bitching about people having fun. Chill the fuck out. You AND the OP, and stop being so spiteful and catty.

ZippyCameBack · 23/10/2017 22:53

Isn't half the purpose of teen fads to be annoying to oldies like us? If we liked it, it would have failed.
My niece still does duckface selfies and those filter thingies and she's well past 20. It don't get it, but I don't need to, so that's fine.

Insomnibrat · 23/10/2017 22:55

Everyone seems so hungry for approval and attention these days. I know everyone always was to a point, but I really feel social media has fuelled this strange thirst to be constantly flattered.

I'm so glad I was through high school before social media became prevalent.

sunandmoonshine · 23/10/2017 22:55

And 'light hearted moan' my arse. It's plain spite. Nothing less. Aimed at her 14 year old stepdaughter Hmm

And then she tries to backtrack by blathering on about adults doing it. She said fuck all about adults doing it in her OP. All the bile was aimed at the step daughter. So yeah, she does sound jealous of her.

StudentMumArghh · 23/10/2017 22:55

Any 'fad' is going to be perceived by an older generation as naff or stupid. I bet what you used to do as a teenager was considered daft by your parents/grandparents etc. In another 30 years they're bound to be saying the same about their own teenagers.

grimeofthecentury · 23/10/2017 22:58

I've seen missing girl posts on fb where the pics were all snapchat filter ones

What happened to school pics?

SuburbanRhonda · 23/10/2017 23:01

The photo her parents found was of her aged around 10 or 11. She looked very different at 14 or 15

Really? So different that the police used a photo of her with a cartoon face and dog ears?

reallyanotherone · 23/10/2017 23:02

I happened to be in a teenage girls profile recently.

What struck me wasn’t the selfies, but one post where she’d ranted a bit about all the boys pm ing cock shots and asking for returns. Then she said i don’t do nudes any more. Girl must have been 15. And from the sound of it sending nude pictures to anyone who asked as if it was completely normal.

I’d take the selfies if it was my sd..

witchofzog · 23/10/2017 23:03

Thank you Ilostitintheeatlynineties. Sometimes I think some people are on a totally different planet. The only one being spiteful and catty and also quite angry is sunandmoonshine. It was a lighthearted post which then led to observation on how these posts are used as popularity contests too.

I have not hurt sd's feelings in anyway. Not have I been anything other than supportive in rl of everything from self image to school work to friendships. But if I can't post that imo the filters look daft then it's a sad state of affairs. I understand why they do them better now though thanks to the more helpful posters who have explained how they make the face more symmetrical etc.

OP posts:
witchofzog · 23/10/2017 23:11

Oh do one "sunandmoon". I am losing patience with you now. I mentioned adults in response to another poster who mentioned adults doing it and then doing them on babies. Because when you post on a forum you are supposed to acknowledge some of the responses too.

Suburban There were 2 pictures on the notice. The one of her age 10 or 11 and the snap chat one yes. I don't know why there were no school ones. I didn't know her or her family so know nothing about why these were not available. Someone else further up had a similar story where this had also happened

Really I am shocked at that. Like I said earlier I would hate to be a teen now. All the pressure to be perfect and send nudes to boys and for that to be totally normal. It's a different world to when I was 14

OP posts:
MyWhatICallNameChange · 23/10/2017 23:15

My stepdaughter did all the silly duck face photos when she was a teen. She's mid twenties now and looks back in horror, so it's great for a laugh as they get older. (Yes, we do get on, we all laugh together)

Regarding school photos, the secondary mine go to only do school photos in y7 and y11. Mine are y9 now so their old pic looks nothing like them now.

BikeRunSki · 23/10/2017 23:17

The photos are mildly amusing, but i’ve started seeing people wearing dog ears/tails/nose etc s d somarbin real life.
