To drink Riesling?

Apparently Riesling is the low of the low of whites according to dp? Wtf?
In his words it’s one of the chav white wines.
Aibu to think that it’s perfectly acceptable and drinkable? I’ve never really given much thought to what wine is considered “chav”?!

In short, @tyunnos, your DP knows fuck all about wine!

rubybleu · 21/10/2017 17:27

dihaster I'm from that side of the world and mostly skip over Kiwi and Australian wines in the UK - we definitely do not get the good stuff here unless you hunt it out, and when we do, it's expensive compared to similar quality European wines.

If you are into Kiwi wines I do recommend the New Zealand Cellar in South London though, they are a lovely bunch and sell some great brands. Still expensive though - a good European mixed case from someone like Yapp Brothers is £140-150, their mixed cases are well beyond the £200+ mark.

Your DP obviously knows very little about wine. Riesling is one of the best white wine grapes. Wine geeks love it. German and Alsace Rieslings are superb, versatile wines.

Buy a bottle, chill it down and tell him it's Chablis. When he says how much he's enjoying it, tell him it's Riesling.

Capricorn76 · 21/10/2017 17:46

M mum used to love a bit of Blue Nun and Hock back in the day.

BoohHumbug · 21/10/2017 17:50

He's not a snob at all. He's just not very knowledgeable about wine. You can get Rieslings for several thousand pounds a bottle. Or just have a nice one for £10.

ILoveMillhousesDad · 21/10/2017 17:54

God. Does he only wear branded clothing too?

Sparkletastic · 21/10/2017 17:56

Oh dear. Your DP needs to educate himself about wine if he’s going to continue making such pronouncements.

Ethylred · 21/10/2017 17:57

Riesling is complicated. I usually don't understand good Riesling but to say that I dislike it would reveal me as, frankly, a chav.

bigbluedustbin · 21/10/2017 18:38

Drink what you like. I can’t stand people who judge like this. It’s wine. It gives you a buzz and a bit of fun no matter if it cost 5 or 100 pounds.

blackteasplease · 21/10/2017 18:41

He's totally wrong. As PPs have said, proper wine experts would not look down on Riesling.

It's a misplaced snobbery which only makes him look stupid. Fine to say he doesn't like it himself but not to say no one else can.

I always worry about saying I don't like Chardonnay, even though I actually don't, because that's also something people who know very little but think they are being clever say!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 21/10/2017 18:43

Your husband knows nothing about wine. There are some excellent reislings around.

I imagine he's still living somewhere in the mid-80s as far as wine is concerned.

werekitty · 21/10/2017 18:45

I have a bottle of Dr loosen open and will be enjoying a glass later!

soundsystem · 21/10/2017 18:48

Your DH is wrong

cheminotte · 21/10/2017 18:50

Love Riesling having lived in Germany. Hate wine snobs - have given up bringing wine to in-law get together because of the snobby comments.

soundsystem · 21/10/2017 18:51

Oops, I didn't actually mean to be that blunt!

I was going to say:

Your DH is wrong, but his view is not uncommon. Part of my job is advising corporate clients on wine lists and reisling makes people a bit nervous. Personally, I love it!

justdontevenfuckingstart · 21/10/2017 18:52

Riesling always goes great with a chinese, I don't mind saying I don't like chardonnay because I really don't. But I only buy the cheap stuff anyway.

soundsystem · 21/10/2017 18:53

Also, is your DH older than you? Because I find people's view seems quite split by age (with older people a bit snobby about it in my experience)

stealthbanana · 21/10/2017 18:54

Riesling is my favourite wine. If that makes me a chav, so be it!

glovesonstrings · 21/10/2017 19:09

Better a decent Riesling than a glass of poxy cheap Pinot Grigio

maitaimojito · 21/10/2017 19:32

I love a good Riesling. As PPs have said, it goes really well with spicy food.

dudsville · 21/10/2017 19:34

A drink doesn't make you a certain kind of person and a certain kind of person doesn't always choose that drink. These categories don't really exist. Enjoy your choice!

Ttbb · 21/10/2017 19:52

Riesling is like the Australian equivalent of prosecco so secretly v chavy under the guise of a middle class trend. Just drink it if you enjoy it. Drinking dessert wine without dessert is a bit weird regardless of what kind it is so who cares?

DNAwrangler · 21/10/2017 20:49

Who cares if it's supposedly a lowly drink or not. If you like how it tastes, drink it and sod your DH.

LoniceraJaponica · 21/10/2017 21:00

Are you the husband? I have the IWC app on my phone and there are 5 gold medal Rieslings on there.

Riesling is what got me into wine - it's the first one I started liking. Nothing wrong with it imo
