Aibu to quit my job and go on benefits.

I have worked in my job for a very long time, almost 14 years. It is in the same borough as I live but a different town seperated by a bridge over water.

Over the past 3 years they have been building a new bridge but always said the original bridge would be kept open for cyclists and pedestrians.

I have always got a taxi to work as I only have a 25 minute window from breakfast club opening and work starting and I dont drive. Buses don't stop near my work.

Seeing as a taxi over the new bridge is now going to cost 60% more per journey I have invested in a bike and started driving lessons with the saved taxi fare. I couldn't afford them before as I was paying for taxis and couldn't afford both.

Well now the council have decided to close the old bridge with a weeks notice and have a shuttle bus for cyclists instead. Great. Only the 25 mins I have to get to work just won't cover the extra journey, to the bus stop, wait for the bus and from the bus stop to work.

I just feel so frustrated. I cant afford to go back to taxi fayres at a 60% increase, I can't drop the children off any earlier and if I shift my day forward and start later I then won't be able to pick up the children on time so will have to use after school care which for 2 children won't be cheap either. I already work later one day a week so work 30 hours.

Just feel like quitting my job.

Give me a shake please. I will figure it out somehow but its so frustrating I could cry.
cry.
It is illegal to cycle on the new bridge.

Well if you think the 60% increase is too much, (rightly so) , imagine how much you'd struggle being on benefits!

I know people are fed the line that people on benefits get everything and their life is so rosy but more often than not it can't be further from.the truth. (Been there & done that and I have always been in a better financial position when in work).

ILoveMillhousesDad · 20/10/2017 18:59

Well I have to cross it every day and I don't know who you are, so no need to name change Grin

insancerre · 20/10/2017 19:00

You won't get any benefits for several months if you quit your job
You will have to suck up the extra cost or negotiate your working hours with your employer
Where I am aftevschool club is only £6.95 a day

NachoAddict · 20/10/2017 19:07

It soon adds up though Insancerre when it is 2 children x 4 days.

Hopefully though if I can make up the missing time on one day rather than at the end of every day it could work and I would onky be £60 a month worse off.

I don't think I could actually give up my job, I have never been a sahm, I enjoy working. It was just a knee jerk reaction.

Milhouse do you like the new bridge? If it wasn't making my life harder I would be happy with it.

You're so funny!! Hilarious, babe!! Took 6 months for my benefits to be sorted after I had to leave a job I loved as I couldn't attend work caring for my daughter. Her dla was awarded 2 months after I'd finished work , HB 8 weeks later so I'm now £2k in arrears. I've got holes in my fucking shoes but its all larks.

ArseholesOnToast · 20/10/2017 19:15

Definitely talk to your employers to negotiate different start/finish times or possibility of working from home.

Universal credits can force you to take any old job however inconvenient or impractical to get to.

ILoveMillhousesDad · 20/10/2017 19:16

I do. I thought I would hate it as I live right by the old bridge, but the traffic was getting so ridiculous. I was prepared to bit pissed off, but it has won me over.

Hopefully you will learn to drive soon as poss.

It's a game changer!

Muddling2 · 20/10/2017 19:22

arseholes universal credit is also going to cure my disabled child that I had to leave my well paid job for so I could care for her 😂😂

Musicaltheatremum · 20/10/2017 19:24

Speak to your MP?

NachoAddict · 20/10/2017 19:28

Muddling I am sorry that you are having a hard time and my post has offended you but it's not a competition. As I said earlier, I also have a disabled child and I am struggling with my situation. You don't have the monopoly on hard times. We all are trying to do best by out family.

Milhouse I luve very close to the old bridge in one town and work very close to it ob the other side, it was perfect for me. I guess I just have to suck it up for this year and get on with these lessons. By the time I pasd my test the old bridge should be almost due open again I guess.

Wow sorry for the typos there. My fingers are too fat for my phone!

Speak to her mp about a bridge lmfao!! I got sanctioned on income support because the bus service stopped due to heavy snow& I didn't make my appointment as I couldn't drag a pushchair 3 miles through it.

weeniedog · 20/10/2017 19:36

If your child gets DLA, you can claim income support, which doesn't have sanctions like JSA so you wouldn't be prevented from claiming for a certain number of weeks. I quit my job to be a carer for my DS and financially it is OK since we are protected from the benefit cap, we get help from disabled charities, and there are no requirements for carers to seek work. They cannot force you to take a job as a carer, even on universal credit. It took a few weeks to get my carers allowance in place so it wasn't too long a wait.

It's worth checking with a disability benefits specialist like CAB, Contact or Carers UK if you want to know the situation if you did decide to claim benefits - the rules are very different for people with disabled children and you'll likely get inaccurate information from people who only know about the situation for jobseekers or parents who don't have disabled children.

How long is your lunch break? Any scope for reducing that so you can start later/leaver earlier?

Muddling2 · 20/10/2017 19:42

nacho its not a competition and I didn't reference you personally because I never saw your post as was typing same time so we x-posted Flowers

Squirmy65ghyg · 20/10/2017 19:42

Is there any way you could borrow the money from eg a relative to do an intensive course?

How far did you get on?

NachoAddict · 20/10/2017 19:45

Sorry Muddling I was too quick to bite there and I apologise.

Glitter I don't have a lunch break, I have timed it so I can work the most amount of hours with as little childcare as possible so one long day and 4 short days of 5.5 hours which os the most you can work without having to take a 20 min break.

GlitterGlue · 20/10/2017 19:52

If I were you I'd do a spreadsheet with your various options and costs. I think that quitting should be your last resort - much easier to find another job if you are already working.

It is shit, I previously had to reduce my hours due to an office move, but the loss of an hours or so a week was less than the cost of alternative childcare.

NachoAddict · 20/10/2017 19:55

Thats a great idea Glitter I love a good spreadsheet.

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/10/2017 19:58

What's not fair is that if you live in Runcorn or Widnes the bridge is free. If you live on the Liverpool/Halewood side you have to pay.

GlitterGlue · 20/10/2017 19:59

Me too! Come back and tell us how it works out.

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/10/2017 20:00

Op they said cyclists could use the new bridge whilst the old one is closed . Have you checked?

Redcliff · 20/10/2017 20:04

Not sure if it makes any difference but you can work 6 hours without a break - good luck.

NachoAddict · 20/10/2017 20:05

Marvel I totally agree with you. Even Cronton is on the outskirts I think. It is a hell of a lot of money for people to find.

The last I saw was that it is illegal for cyclists to be on the new bridge, it is far too dangerous to walk or cycle over. Plus it is sooo long I would probably still be cycling on friday having left on Monday Grin
