Reasonable spend for one person shop?

I don't want to give an amount as to bias things but what do you consider reasonable for one person's shopping per week, at Asda or Tesco?

Person in question does buy brands and also likes the odd organic or posh health food thingy.

I think in order to eat a good quality diet with plenty of fruit and veg and organic food you need to allow £35 at least.

sunandmoonshine · 20/10/2017 18:26

Yeah - £35 ish. A week.

Depends if it just food too. Not detergents or toothpastes or toiletries or magazines or anything?

Mammylamb · 20/10/2017 18:26

I'd say around 50 a week! But to save money, I would recommend batch cooking and freezing lots of small portions!

sunandmoonshine · 20/10/2017 18:26

And does it include booze?

RoganJosh · 20/10/2017 18:27

Depends if they can afford it or not. I could spend more than £50 if I wanted, I'm sure.

OurMiracle1106 · 20/10/2017 18:27

I’m a single person. Around 25-35 a week depending if I need toilet rolls/washing powder. But I don’t drink and I buy lunch at work most days.

Spangles1963 · 20/10/2017 18:29

As a PP said,it depends whether it includes alcohol. Also, does it include stuff like toiletries (soap, toothpaste etc) and household stuff, like loo roll and washing up liquid?

Glumglowworm · 20/10/2017 18:30

I hate these questions

It very much depends what the persons salary is and what their other expenses are

If they can afford it and are happy then it's reasonable

Ecureuil · 20/10/2017 18:32

Whatever they can afford and want to spend.

YoureNoFuckingElvis · 20/10/2017 18:32

I spend about £20-25, but I don't eat organic and I'm vegetarian. That includes basic cleaning stuff, but not toiletries.

I think £35 is definitely reasonable for organic foods and brands.

wobblywonderwoman · 20/10/2017 18:34

I could do it for 30 but agree- batch cook bolognese etc so you don't have any waste.

Ollivander84 · 20/10/2017 18:37

I spend anything from £35-50 but that covers all my work lunches as well and cleaning products etc
Not including cat food or anything apart from basic toiletries

Aquamarine1029 · 20/10/2017 18:44

I would say 50 a week with some of that being used to make a couple of batch meals that could be frozen for later use.

Waitingonasmile · 20/10/2017 18:49

I used to spend about £80, but that would include lunches for work and a bottle of wine.

CabbageSoupy · 20/10/2017 18:52

Thanks all- I didn't think I was being unreasonable at around £45 a week including household items and the odd toiletries.

DM thinks I am. I am on an acceptable but not huge salary.

I spent about the same when I was shopping just for me. How you spend your money is your business, some people save for massive cruises, some people spend a huge amount on going out, I just like a nice dinner at home.

ShirleyPhallus · 20/10/2017 18:58

No one else's business how you spend your money Confused

I literally cannot imagine having a conversation with someone about how much I spend on food. Some weeks it's £5, some weeks it's £200. Who cares.

cathf · 20/10/2017 18:58

Well someone on here this week claimed they spent £55 per month on food to feed three (or four, I can't remember) and the next poster said she spent ,£5 week for her family - so by that measure, between £2 and £5 ?Grin

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 20/10/2017 19:13

I spend about £80-100 per week for DP and I, although he eats enough for two people EASILY (needs about 4-5000 calories daily just to maintain his weight because he’s an endurance athlete). We buy a mix of budget and luxury items.

For just me I reckon it would still be around £40 because I’d probably buy more luxury items (I don’t bother when I know they’ll disappear into him in seconds!) and veg etc would still come in the same sizes/packs.

Aquamarine1029 · 20/10/2017 19:15

The main lesson from all this is to stop telling your mother about your personal finances.

cushioncovers · 20/10/2017 19:33

I would say £50

PandorasXbox · 20/10/2017 19:36

What’s it to your mum?

RB68 · 20/10/2017 19:39

errr I think that is quite alot - I would prob go 20 but then my bill this week was 42 for 3 of us and the dog

noeffingidea · 20/10/2017 19:46

I'd probably spend about £25 a week on myself just for food and toiletries, though I can actually live on a lot less. I am a vegetarian though and I never buy organic.
My son who is at uni has budgeted for £30 a week, but he does eat meat. Not sure how he is getting on though.
It's entirely up to you though. People have different budgets and different tastes, nothing to do with anyone else.
