Contactless card declined but not chip and pin

Tried to use contactless card just now in a cafe, and it was declined twice. Went to the bank to check my balance, which was fine. I then tried to use the chip and pin instead, which worked. Have only used by contactless card for public transport so far this morning. Any ideas why it may have been declined?

Thankfully $100 is £75 not £60 our economy isn't that bad!

Unless it's Australian dollars, which is about £59

Yes, sorry - is AU$, keep forgetting that other countries have dollars.

I used self-service checkout in Sainsburys last week - paid with Monzo card using contactless and machine said it was declined and to use another card - so I paid with my Starling card (also using contactless) which was accepted.

Got home and realised the Monzo payment had been taken from my account and not declined at all, so messaged them and they got it refunded which is just as well as when I complained to Sainsburys they obviously were not bothered that I had been charged twice for my shopping as they didn't reply.

Monzo said that there was a small chance the merchant (Sainsburys) might still try and take the payment again and to let them know if they did, but fortunately this hasn't happened.

You have to periodically use the card the old fashioned way. Fraud prevention measure.

Could be anything interfering with the signal from the card, WIFI, the microwave, anything else that generates a signal

I’ve had my contactless card for ages, use it loads and have never been asked for my PIN.

This has been happening to me a lot recently. You apparently have to use chip and pin every so often. Also if you try to make more than one contactless payment in the same shop/bar etc it will be declined which I think is to stop bigger transactions being split into a few of £30 or less.

I don't think I've ever been asked to use chip and pin when I've used contactless. Getting worried now my bank doesn't have random checks!

Obviously the zombie thread message isn't prominent enough Grin

I used mine twice yesterday then on the 3rd time it didn't work so I did chip and pin and it was fine

Haggisfish · 05/09/2018 11:56

My contactless has to be used with pin for first transaction after I got it before contactless would work. Again, security.

@MyDC - Think Maitland Girl is talking Oz dollars ... the US don't have contactless - or even chip n pin. Last time I was there it was still a signature on the receipt!

Of course they do....

Same thing happened to me the other day. It was a new card though, contactless kept declining but chip and pin was ok. Guessing its a security thing

SubparOwl · 20/02/2019 08:43

This has happened to me twice in the same shop, the cashier told me it just happens sometimes.
