To think this man would not have done this on a plane

Waiting to get on a plane, easyJet. The couple behind us were discussing why people pay for Speedy Boarding. The man said it was because people want to keep their cabin baggage with them. Then he said that he wouldn't pay for Speedy boarding when he is alone, because if he gets on the plane and there is a bag in the locker above his seat he takes it out and leaves it in the aisle so he can put his bag there!

Surely, he was showing off to his partner, no one would do that, would they? Or is this a new low in cuntish behaviour on flights? Is it a thing? I mean, I have seen a lot of awful behaviour on flights, but really, what fresh hell is this?

Ah, I'm a small person with a small case. Grin But it's not that much smaller than the max allowed, though it is soft-sided so a bit squishy (depending on what's in it.)

The cabin crew did once put it in the overhead, and I did have to ask someone to get it down for me. He obliged without demur, but I felt about five. :(

loveka · 19/10/2017 23:08

I often see people on easyJet yelling because they want to take 2 pieces of hand luggage on. The other day I saw a guy yelling at the gate, then yelling on the plane at the cabin crew!

Trills · 19/10/2017 23:17

He has fundamentally misunderstood the nature of "space in the overheard lockers".

Trills · 19/10/2017 23:20

The staff keep an eye on how many big bags go onto the plane.

If you are past the middle of the queye they start strongly encouraging you to give up your bag to be put in the hold for no extra cost.

Speedy boarding ensures that this does not happen to you.

Having your bag directly above your head is not what's going on.

wasonthelist · 19/10/2017 23:23

And as no one want to pay for hold luggage everyone has the biggest case allowed these days.

I don't - I have a very small laptop bag BUT I refuse to put it under the seat in front as there's even less space for me to fold my legs/feet into.

On my weekly flight I see some amazing stuff. One recent trend seems to be for people to stash their bag in the luggage locker at the front as they get on, no matter where they are seated, so they can just sail by and collect on the way off. Great for them, not so much for the folk in the front rows.
and don't get me started on the fuckers who can't read which end of the plane to get on at, even though it's printed on their boarding pass.

isnt cabin baggag still limitd to 10kg?

BarbaraofSevillle · 20/10/2017 06:01

I agree list. I refuse to have even less legroom because most other people have brought big bags. Some of that overhead locker space is mine.

Where possible, I have hold luggage and just have a small rucksack or similar as carry on. It's sometimes worth the extra cost to avoid all the overhead locker angst as well as not havving to drag a wheelie case around the airport.

A lot of people are just unthinking idiots who care about no-one except themselves. You know that baffling queue of people lining up to board before the plane is even at the gate? They're wanting to get their bag in the locker and sod everyone else. And a lot of the problem is caused by people putting their bag in sideways when more bags would go in if they turned them round.

I've turned other people's bags to get mine in more than once (I'm often one of the last on because I sit and wait until nearly everyone else is on and I still usually hit the back of the queue on the air bridge or steps).

But the crew have to and do usually sort things. They've started pre-empting this by taking some trolley cases from the queue because the fact is that if everyone (or probably more than half the plane) brought a trolley at the max size, there is not enough room. And then bags have to go in the lockers efficiently, not sideways on and smaller bags have to go under seats.

One flight I was on that was mostly buisiness people had a real problem and there were people getting on and there was no room. The chief cabin crew woman made a series of very strict and pointed announcements about the plane missing its slot if people didn't co-operate with getting all the bags stowed away and some people giving them up to go in the hold, which few agreed to because of course they all contained laptops and precious business papers.

The last flight I went on was a refreshing change because it was a jet2 flight that had probably got a large percentage of passengers on jet2holidays packages, who include hold baggage at no extra cost so there were very few wheelie cases in the cabin and the lockers were less than half full so plenty of room for the minority of passengers on hand luggage only.

My last (and I mean last) Ryanair in September had me agog as a woman arrived, one of the last to board and did this- her seat was across the aisle from us, the bin was full and she asked "whose bag is this?" The guy said "mine" and she told him to move it because hers had to go there. He was in the row in front. He took his bemusedly (I wouldn't) but then the cabin guy came down having obviously been alerted by the ground staff and told her she shouldn't have brought it on, she'd been told there was no more room. She strops and the poor guy who had paid priority had his bag taken away and put in the hold.

I travel a lot on EasyJet, I prefer them because they allow a larger cabin case than other carriers, and also no weight limit. I pack a separate bag with money and valuables in the top of the case. If there's no room in the cabin for my trolley case, I can quickly take this bag out (to go under my seat) and put my case into the hold. This method works for me and I find the cabin crew are always very helpful. Although if I paid for Speedy Boarding I could take a second bag on, without having to place it inside my case, and as others have said be guaranteed to get my case in the cabin.

Goshthatwentwell · 20/10/2017 07:07

Easyjet doesn't have a weight limit Gabs

I have never worked out why they don't load people not using lockers first. That way at least some of the plane could be seated and organised. Then seat people from the back rather than Speedy ( which is hardly so) or families first ( parents are often as efficient as anyone else and often more so than misty eyed young couples).

Jogel · 20/10/2017 07:21

If I don't need to use locker space I'd rather wait to board last Goshthatwentwell less time cooped up in your seat Grin, so not sure that would work?

SerendipityFelix · 20/10/2017 07:48

I’m with Jogel, and another who is too short to reach the overhead locker anyway. I travel with a squishy hold-all weekend bag and stuff it under the seat in front (don’t need leg room anyway), and I prefer to hang back and board at the end, avoid all the drama.

Goshthatwentwell · 20/10/2017 08:25

Yeah maybe although more people use lockers and getting into a middle seat with a bag with a window person in place could be tricky. Either way! I am an under the seat person too.

Always amazed by how faffy people can be.

disahsterdahling · 20/10/2017 09:07

When I don't have much hand luggage and know it'll go under the seat in front of me I'll board late, as someone said, why hang around in your seat longer than you have to.

Last Friday I flew with a small suitcase and I did sit as close to the gate as I could and was 5th in the queue to get on because I knew the plane was small and I know the size of the overhead lockers and wanted my case close to hand and definitely not in the hold so I didn't have to hang around waiting for my case on arrival. If I'm flying hand luggage only I want the benefits of that. Also wanted to be one of the first to get to passport control.

Came back on Eurostar, which is a lot easier in some respects! But obviously no good if you are eg going to the US.

ninjapants · 20/10/2017 09:21

Have never seen anyone do this but once had to sit with my feet on top of my carry on case as there was no space in the overhead lockers and the flight was already late to depart so no time to put extra bags in the hold apparently. I complained obviously but was that was the only solution. I have arthritis so it was extremely uncomfortable. Later found out it's also illegal on safety grounds. Guess what airline? Wink

Jogel · 20/10/2017 10:47

Ninjapants got to be Ryanair? I hate them, they're cheap and nasty. Only use them if there is no alternative.

ninjapants · 20/10/2017 11:09

It was of course, Ryanair!
