Nursery Fees

It's more of a what would you do or really just a rant because I don't think there is actually anything I can do!

DS (2) has started in a new nursery following us moving house. He took quite a while to settle in to his last one so we were quite relieved that he's settled in well at the new one. There are still tears of a morning but we have seen that he stops pretty much as soon as we leave. We picked this nursery because of its opening hours being advertised as 7:30 to 6, which works well for DH and I as we both start work at 8 about 15 minutes down the road.

Before DS properly started we had an email about annual fee increase changing to £47.50 for a full day. This was not an issue as we were told they increase annually and that is the average price in this area for a full day. However on DS's second day we took him in for 7:35 to be asked if he was booked in for the morning. When we said that he did full days we were told that between 7:30 and 8 is not included in the price and we need to book him in as extra for mornings he will be coming. Nobody could tell me how much extra it was but I was just told that it would be added to my invoice and not to worry about it. I asked for him to be booked in all next month for earlier sessions too as we will have to get him in for 7:30 most mornings. I know I should have spoken to the manager at the time but I've had a million and one things to sort with the new house/old house/car/new job and I just thought it was something that could wait until I got my invoice.

I've just had my invoice and it works out that it's going to cost £54 a day instead of the £47.50 as advertised for a full day. So that's an extra £6.50 for half an hour each day, working out as almost an extra £20 a week. Also I should add that this half an hour is spent in the baby room with a handful of other children so we are paying for him to sit with other children and play with toys that he is too big for.

On their website it says they are open from 7:30-6 but there is absolutely no mention of "breakfast club" as they called it. The fee increase letter says that all meals are included in the price and state the cost is for a full day, states the opening hours as 7:30-6 but then says early sessions may be available with no mention of the times classed as early. I'm sure I read through the contract properly and there was no mention of extra charges for early mornings but the contract is nowhere to be found.

I don't want to take DS out of the nursery as he has settled and it's a really convenient location for us. Is there anything I can actually do about it or am I just going to have to pay?

I have to pay £6 to drop off before 8. She's dropped off at 7:50!

isitme88 · 17/10/2017 21:48

We have this, it's very clearly stated though as extra. Also if you claim 15 or 30 hour funding, you cannot use it for more than 10 hours a day. So 7.30-6 would be over that limit. So you take the 10 hours and pay the extra

isitme88 · 17/10/2017 21:48

I pay £5 per child. 2 days a week. It massively eats into my wage. I try and avoid but would mean I'm late for work

WineIsMyMainVice · 17/10/2017 21:54

Is he actually having breakfast if it’s breakfast club? That does seem quite steep to be honest!

Ghostlyfeet · 17/10/2017 22:04

I pay an extra £5 a day to drop off at 730 instead of 8 as I'd never make it to work before 9 otherwise and it's the same situation- drop off to the baby room. All the kids get breakfast when they get to nursery so it's not that thats extra

DontTouchTheMoustache · 17/10/2017 22:13

Shock are these London prices??? So expensive! I'm in west yorkshire, it costs me £27.50 per day. How does anyone manage £54 per day!?

glow1984 · 17/10/2017 22:18

We may just over £45 per day for 0730-1830 in Kent

DontTouch London is more like £90 per day!!

Going back to topic, I’d be so pissed off, but I think you need to check your contract too

I used to be a nursery manager and have worked in a few different nurseries and this is the first time I've ever come across this. Opening times advertised have always been opening times for a full day. On his first day I took him in about 8:15 and they were having breakfast then in his room.

I might try and get a copy of the contract from there today, I am sure I read through it though and can't remember any mention of extra charges.

donttouch not London, central Scotland, major town (not Edinburgh/Glasgow). We're £50 for 8am-6pm plus an extra £6 for 7:30-8am, so £56 per day. Crippling!

Cutesbabasmummy · 18/10/2017 09:22

£52 per day here in Oxfordshire.

needtogiveitablow · 19/10/2017 08:34

£45 per day in the NE - on an hourly basis the vast majority of nurseries come in at around the same in this area
