So Dd2 is in year 7. She had a really bad tummy bug near the start of the year. So she had the required 2 days off.
Now because her attendance is only 89% she is on attendance watch.
Aibu to be annoyed as it is just bad timing. 2 days off later in the year would not trigger such an event but it is still the same level of absence.

I think awards for attendance are unfair. Most children are ill at some point in the year. Some children with chronic conditions could never achieve 100% attendance. Do schools really want children to come into school when they are ill and share their germs with everyone, just so they won't miss out on the award?

Unfortunately I think they do. Also like my workplace just shows things don’t change even when you leave school.
Works expect me to come in when I am spreading germs to other staff and then wonder why everyone is so ill the week after

Sorry, haven't RTFT but a DM I know has 3 DS. Two are now thankfully through the schooling system, 3rd is now in Y9. I genuinely wonder if the mother is just neurotic or if there is more going on. All 3DS have had poor attendance. DS3 has come under attack from both primary and secondary school for his poor attendance. Now I understand some DC cannot help sickness but in this case if the DS complains of an illness, the DM contacts their GP, who immediately prescribes antibiotics. According to DM, DS3 has had numerous chest and ear infections this calendar year (in excess of 10) and has had at least a week off school on each occasion. As soon as he is given antibiotics, he has a week off school as DM does not trust the school to send him home if he says he is feeling ill, nor does she believe that they wil give him his antibiotics at the right time. By the time DS3 school had been back for 4 weeks and 3 days since early September, DS3 had had 2 separate full weeks off school, along with extra time for GP and consultant appointments.

All three DS have been under private Consultants for different conditions to get to the cause of the problems but with no confirmed diagnosis made. I am amazed that neither the GP/Consultant/School haven't investigated further into the reasons the child is always off school. Also interesting to note that the number of times the child goes to see the GP in the school holidays is drastically reduced.

I prefer she has definitely only had 2 days off but because those two days were early in the term (pre 30 days) her percentage was 89. Something.
As a result she will be monitored until it reaches 97%

If you're one of the majority who know you're doing most things right, try and bear in mind the rules are written to support the children whose parents aren't. There has to be a base line rule for everyone so that genuine issues are flagged up through fact and statistic and those pupils or their parents get the support they need. If you're planning on her being in school as normal, she'll be back up there at 97% in no time with no issue. I wouldn't stress about it. Attendance awards are a poorly executed and ill thought out way to encourage the attendance of those who wouldn't go otherwise. Sadly, that incentive isn't appreciated by the people who don't encourage the kids to go in the worst cases. It's not meant to discriminate against genuine illness its just hard to navigate. I'm not a fan, really. Odd idea.
