Old tenants debt

Lived in my new home for a few months now. Daily we are getting a huge pile of letters for old tenants. I have returned to sender. However they are still coming through the door.
I have looked at senders address if it is stamped on back of envelope, googled to find telephone number and told them they are sending out letters to wrong address. They are all debt agencies. Some are happy to take address off the account, many are saying the letters will still come.
I know where old tenant works. AIBU to give work address to these agencies or to take letters to her. I know IA probably BU.
Wwyd? I know ignoring them and returning them are not a major issue. I just don't want my address being 'blacklisted' for credit etc.

Addresses don’t get blacklisted. Only people.

mintteaandbananabread · 13/10/2017 13:18

Your address can't be backlisted for credit, it doesn't go on addresses, it's individual to each person. Just put them in the bin or back in the post box.

HolidayHelpPlease · 13/10/2017 13:20

You’re not pathetic. At previous addresses I have had bailiffs show up over unpaid council tax from previous tenants - it was terrifying (until they knew it wasn’t me, then they were lovely). I would do anything to prevent that happening again. I’m currently in the same boat in my new flat with a previous tenants parking tickets!

So i'm worrying over nothing!
Thank you.
I have been thinking of all scenarios where i may need a credit card or to extend overdraft or store card etc and being denied because of address!

@HolidayHelpPlease council tax is another one she is getting. I phoned them and they said there is no fwding address for them so they can't take her off my address. They have put it on system though. But letters are still coming. If bailiffs do come I have tenancy agreement to hand and my current council tax bill which is certainly not in the red!

As has been said addresses are not blacklisted only people. However it would be good to have someting whivh shows when you moved in to hand incase debt collectors arrive at your door and don't want to believe you have no connection to the debtor.

Yanbu to pass on details of where the previous occupier can be found, people who try to walk away from their debts just make things more expensive for the rest of us.

19lottie82 · 13/10/2017 13:25

Just write on them "no longer resident - return to sender" and put them in the post box.
If you do go to the old tenants work to give them to her, realistically what do you think she's going to do with them?

usernameavailable · 13/10/2017 13:31

@19lottie82 you are right, she will most likely bin them. I do put 'no longer resident return to sender.'
Its anything up to 10 letters per day!
Debt scares me, so i actually feel for the old tenant but equally ticked off that I am thinking bailiffs are going to end up at my door any day now!

@usernameavailable that’s very strange! I would ring up your councils electoral roll and query who is listed as being resident at the property and remove her. Then you have additional evidence that she no longer lives there!
Re bailiffs, just make sure you have two forms of photo ID in a quick grab place. When I was a student (council tax bailiff #1) they only wanted 1 but it must be incredibly common in student areas!

PollyBanana · 13/10/2017 13:32

I had similar.
Previous owner did not get their mail redirected but would come and collect it once a week.
Quite a few brown envelopes franked with local magistrates office plus a few bills where I could see FINAL if I peered sideways through the clear address window.
Finally baliffs turned up but were perfectly ok when I showed them doucments which gave my name.

I also knew where previous owner worked, nay where he was boss of his own business.Only a mile or so away.
I walked into to his open plan office after the Baliffs turned up and slammed his mail onto his desk and told him (most probably in a slightly louder voice than was necessary) that I would appreciate it if he would settle all the outstanding debts he ran up at our address and PLEASE make sure the baliffs didn't turn up again.

It was interesting just how silent that office full of people was as I walked out.

usernameavailable · 13/10/2017 13:41

@HolidayHelpPlease i have removed her and her family from the electoral but that was only a couple of weeks ago. I dont know how long it takes to process.

@PollyBanana I actually wish I could have seen his face!
The old tenant doesn't work in an office. And it is very local. So if I did that to her the whole of area would know! I feel that is a bit unfair to her. Tempting though!

I'd be tempted to send a letter saying their behaviour is harassment and you'll be seeking legal advice if it doesn't stop.
