TO think if you kill a baby, it’s not “because your wife was unfaithful” **Trigger warning: distressing content** [Warning added by MNHQ]

People cheat everyday. It’s devastaing, it’s upsetting but it has no reason to make someone’s want to kill an infant. If you’re the sort of person who attacks a baby with a hammer you didn’t need a reason. Just the Independent doesn’t seem to understand that.

Father killed toddler with claw hammer after promising wife he believed unfaithful 'special night', court hears - The Independent

Well it may have been his motivation.

We was paranoid and using drugs. Logic won't have been his strong point.

MorrisZapp · 13/10/2017 13:08

Link doesn't work for me, but surely the independent are just reporting what his defence was? It's not their job to tell us whether his defence is reasonable or not.

Rinoachicken · 13/10/2017 13:09

My God that’s horrific

MorrisZapp · 13/10/2017 13:10

As an aside, I've often thought that men who commit domestic violence because they think they've been cheated on are probably the most likely demographic to be cheaters themselves.

Feministcheeseplate · 13/10/2017 13:13

No doubt it was his defence but the reporting is that it was his belief in unfaithfulness that cause him to murder the child. Read the story (if I can get it to work). Every story where a man kills his family also has an excuse for “why” he did it. As though if that excuse hadn’t set it off it would never have happened. If it wasn’t her “unfaithfulness” next time it would have been the dishes were dirty, or he was sacked from his job. None of those things make someone want to kill a child though

Hopefully link works this time

But it was his defence/argument/justification.

Of course they will report it.

If he'd said magic fairies made him do it the headline would be

'Magic fairies cause father to kill child'.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 13/10/2017 13:19

we know that, the judge and the jury will know that

no words, I hope he will be tormented by the evil he did for the rest of his sorry life

I also hope the fellow inhabitants at his prison fuck him over , daily

MorrisZapp · 13/10/2017 13:21

I've read the article, it simply reports the facts of the case and what was said in court. The crime was heartbreaking and utterly despicable, but I'm at a loss as to what you're accusing the Independent of.

ArcheryAnnie · 13/10/2017 13:27

I hate headlines which seek to "explain" incredibly violent acts by men as the inevitable result of what a woman may or may not have done. She nagged! She was emotionally distant! She wanted to leave him! That's what made him kill the entire family, not that he was an abusive, violent murderer.

LittleMyLikesSnuffkin · 13/10/2017 13:34

He used the poor little boy to punish his partner for something. He's not the first cunt to use his children this way. The fact the mother of the little boy hadn't cheated is neither here nor there. There is no excuse to murder anyone over perceived cheating. This was cold blooded revenge dealt out by an utterly revolting bastard.

CoolCarrie · 13/10/2017 13:36

Horrible, vile bastard, that poor wee boy and his sister badly injured as well, but the papers can't name her.

LittleMyLikesSnuffkin · 13/10/2017 13:38

Completely agree ArcheryAnnie same when men murder their partners/children/both and then themselves and people comment about all his good points. "He was so polite, friendly, hardworking, friendly" no, no, no. Any good he's ever done is wiped out by the incredibly evil man act of murder.

Oddly enough the women murdered are often not remembered much at all. "She was quiet, kept herself to herself, didn't talk to no one" yeah I wonder why? Hmm

MissionItsPossible · 13/10/2017 13:39

Er, no, of course you're not being unreasonable.

StaplesCorner · 13/10/2017 13:41

"diminished responsibility" - jesus wept. He's an evil murdering psychopath.

Soubriquet · 13/10/2017 13:41

That poor little boy

I despise parents who do this to their children

JaniceBattersby · 13/10/2017 13:47

It's a fair, accurate and contemporaneous report of the proceedings in court. It's not sensationalised the case and has simply reported the fact his mitigation was that his wife was seeing other men. Of course that mitigation is absolutely ridiculous and the judge will see straight through that. It's a reporter's job to accurately reflect proceedings in court. Emily has done that well. It's not her fault the defendant is a complete wanker.

GrumpyOldBag · 13/10/2017 13:49

The headline does not make an excuse for the husband. It lacks punctuation because it is a headline.

It means: A father killed his toddler with a claw hammer, after promising his wife, whom he believed had been unfaithful, that he would give her a 'special night', according to the case presented in court.

GrumpyOldBag · 13/10/2017 13:51
  1. Man thinks wife has been unfaithful.
  2. Tells his wife he'll give her a 'special night'.
  3. Kills toddler with a hammer

That is my understanding of the headline. No judgement there. And I do not wish to click on the link and read the gruesome story.

ppeatfruit · 13/10/2017 13:52

Anyone who kills their child should be sterilised. It makes me so mad.

DearMrDilkington · 13/10/2017 13:55

Poor little boy. I hope the girl involved makes a full recover and the mother gets as much help as she needs to try and carry on with her life.

What a horrendous thing to do. I hope he spends many many miserable years in prison and isn't protected in there.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 13/10/2017 14:16

Hi folks, thanks for the reports.

We're going to edit the title of your thread, OP, as quite a few MNers have found it distressing. Thanks Flowers
