Am attending an interview at a university for a research job (junior) and have no idea what to wear? A suit would be overkill, right? how about black denim and smart shirt or top? A dress? what?

I work at a 'top RG' in STEM academia. I am currently wearing baggy jeans, bashed Superstars, a black T-shirt And a Superdrug hoodie Grin

I'd be wearing jeans and smart top to interview you.

I'd be wearing more formal office attire to lecture.

I'd not bat an eyelid at smart jeans on an interviewee. I don't expect men to wear ties either.

Superdry, not Superdrug, hoodie. Although knowing how MN hates the former, maybe the latter is better...

I am a research associate (at a level that requires PhD, so probably not what OP means by "junior"). Neither RG nor post-92 institution.
I have been on an interview panel & not so long ago an interviewee.

ime, smart casual to full blown suit & everything inbetween are fine. Suit is not overkill & the denim jeans with very smart top & shoes would be fine, too. We're much more interested in what you say than what you wear. There's no space on the institutional interview score sheet (which is subject to FOI requests) to comment on what you wear and formally make that part of our decision process.
