I don't agree that it's a class thing.

I hated working in a Bank, because if my co-workers being up-their-own-arse.

Loved working in two very busy off licences, because of the varied friendly customers and loved Chalet cleaning because of my colleagues.

That wasn't doing something I loved but liking where I was, though.

In a way, minimum wage jobs allow easy movement that degree based jobs don't, if things aren't right.

Lostwithinthehills · 12/10/2017 06:42

It’s just not possible for everyone to love their job. Nobody thinks it’s their dream to be a cleaner, or road sweeper, or checkout assistant, or taxi driver etc. and the bulk of jobs are ones that nobody aspires to. If they are lucky most people will find an element of their job which they enjoy such as interaction with colleagues while others enjoy working alone, the hours may suit people, or the travel time but they are doing those jobs just because they need to feed and house themselves, Lots of people choose careers seen as vocations which they fall out of love with because they are ground down by them. Having a job which reflects a personal interest or passion, with good pay, good working conditions and a good work life balance is a rare thing.

Argh! Posted too soon.

One friend is in an MLM. The entire bloody feed is about how AMAZING her life is, how she is her own boss babe, how she loves her life and works for herself. That's right before posting something trying to sell me and her other friends her overpriced stuff.

The MLM thing is another level of trying to reel people in by telling you that you should love your job. It's not real and my friend definitely has bad days...the desperation to get sales is obvious.

Birdsgottafly · 12/10/2017 06:43

"To anyone who claims to love their job, I'd ask: "would you do it for free and for the same hours if you had another income that covered you?""

The jobs that I've liked, I have done similar roles Voluntarily, so I'm lucky to be able to say Yes.

LittleBooInABox · 12/10/2017 06:43

I love my job but I'm one of the lucky ones. My job isn't something that can be done by anyone. Not everyone can handle the environment:

Littlepond · 12/10/2017 06:46

I saw a meme thingy on Facebook once which said "oh, you hate your job? There's a support group for that. It's called Everybody, we meet at the bar", I think it's a quote from a comedian. Anyway, cue loads of people commenting saying "I love my job!"

i like my job but the money is terrible. And I always prefer not being at work to being there. I have to work, so I'm glad I do the job I do, but if I won the lottery I'd quit tomorrow!

Badgoushk · 12/10/2017 06:55

Ifailed, yes I'd do it for free! I love my job as a doctor. It's my second career and I hated my old job. Some days I feel like I do do it for free as we may more in childcare than I earn! But that will hopefully change over time.

mellongoose · 12/10/2017 06:57

DH has a job that is the envy of most. He loves it 60% of the time. It’s gruelling and physical , lots can go wrong if he’s not super organised. If he makes a mistake it can be dangerous for him or his customers and the financial rewards are not fantastic once the overheads are paid. BUT the 60% is fantastic and extremely rewarding in other ways

Mine is interesting, stimulating and varied. Not mind blowingly amazing though!

We are lucky. We are both fairly flexible to enable us to look after young DC.

Pinkpowerofthought · 12/10/2017 07:02

I used to do a job I loved but it didn't fit with family life. My mundane job is physically hard and I'm left absolutely shattered at the end of the day but I get to finish at 2.30, it's better paid and I get to pick dd up from school saving me a fortune in childcare.

I don't love my job. I would love to have worked in conservation for animals but i would have to be childless to do that for it to work.
So meanwhile I'm stuck in a mundane job that physically kills me but hey ho.

Highpeak · 12/10/2017 07:06

I like my job a lot and am missing it while on mat leave. However, if I won the lottery I would be doing something different, something I love but chose not to make a career of for various reasons.

starzig · 12/10/2017 07:10

I think people are conditioned to an extent to think 'urgh work' whether they particularly mean it or not. People also have off days. As much as I love my work I still whinge and have awful projects scheduled on some days that makes me want to call in sick.

starzig · 12/10/2017 07:14

Birdsgottafly if money was no issue, I would still like to do my current job but maybe less hours.

starzig · 12/10/2017 07:16

Sorry birdsgottafly, just realised you were quoting.

Ragwort · 12/10/2017 07:19

Yes, I love my job, and I would (and have) done it for free if I didn't need the income. I honestly look forward to going to work and choose to work weekends* - and today I am doing my 'job' for another organisation in an unpaid capacity.

*Maybe that says more about my home life than my job Grin.

But I am fortunate in that I have loads of autonomy in my job and no imediate boss breathing down my neck or telling me what to do.

BeyondThePage · 12/10/2017 07:20

OP - I have never felt any pressure at all for everything to be perfect.

I enjoy my job,

would I do it if I didn't have to?

  • no I'd swan round the world drinking champagne, seeing the wonders, sat on my arse being waited on hand and foot, but in the real world I work for a living, so what I do is just fine.
User7628 · 12/10/2017 07:20

My job is very rewarding in parts (client contact and relationship building), boring in others (endless paperwork) and the people I work with are not the best from a getting on as a group point of view. I have had better jobs in the same industry in the past due to the team being more up my street so to speak. However it is flexible, I get paid well and it lets me have a nice lifestyle.

Overall it's a 7/10.

The industry is full of greedy people though and I don't like that aspect.

LyannaStarktheWolfMaid · 12/10/2017 07:23

I absolutely love my job, and if I win the lottery I would not only do it for free, but would invest in the company I work for. I have had previous jobs that I've loved, and jobs that I've hated, and one that was so awful it made me ill. So now I feel incredibly grateful to be doing something that I find so interesting and worthwhile.

Tumbleweed101 · 12/10/2017 07:26

I think lots of people have to do jobs they dislike just to pay the bills which is a shame since we have to spend such a large part of our lives doing it.

Personally I'm in a job I enjoy at the moment. Not sure I could say it's my dream job but I am able to pull in elements of what would be my dream job (writer) and get paid for it. It's a small business so there is a lot of flexibility in being able to use strengths and interests. My colleagues are nice and there is a chance of more training and progression which to me is an important thing.

fairyofallthings · 12/10/2017 07:29

I absolutely love my job, there are trade offs and sacrifices to be made but on the whole it's worth it - of course there are bad days but they are few and far between. Some say I'm lucky but I'm doing this job because of things I planned when I was younger so I could do a job I loved for the years before I retire. I've done a variety of jobs, well paid ones, long hours ones, short hour ones but this gives the most satisfaction.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 12/10/2017 07:29

Nearly all the jobs I have done, I have enjoyed to some extent. I wouldn't say I've ever loved them. But if I had hated them, I would have left.

The first job - I loved the actual work, didn't like the travel to the job, and wasn't keen on some of the politics. Then a sexual harassment situation arose, and it became appalling to stay there, so I left.
Next one - loved the work, mostly, some of the people weren't great but mostly it was fine. Except the pressure and workload was horrific, especially as we were chronically understaffed and had to put in unpaid extra hours to get the work done.
I left to re-train. Also had to work while re-training - one of those jobs was gained through an agency and I can honestly say it was dreadful but thankfully it was only half a day a week - gave that up as soon as something better came up!
Next jobs were office-based and had their up and down sides, but I mostly enjoyed them.
Then self-employment - I liked the flexibility, I liked most of the people, didn't like the management so much but I would have kept doing that if we hadn't emigrated.

Currently SAHM. But need to do some form of paid work next year when DS2 starts school - not quite sure what I'm going to do yet!

Headofthehive55 · 12/10/2017 07:31

I like my colleagues and enjoy the work - but get bored as I've done the job quite a while. I don't find it challenging and that makes me a bit sad.

Littledrummergirl · 12/10/2017 07:32

I've noticed I've always been happiest in the jobs I've chosen to do rather than had to do.
Choices make the difference for me.

Ploppie4 · 12/10/2017 07:34

I didn’t like the job I trained for. Love my second career

Mittens92 · 12/10/2017 07:46

My job is boring and repetitive but the bills don't pay themselves.

Oblomov17 · 12/10/2017 07:54

I’ve liked most jobs I’ve ever had.
No one of 40-50 I know ever had any careers advice. It’s better now.
It is important to like your job. It makes a big difference.
I love mine. But I only do it 3 days and I suspect that’s a large part of the reason why!
