To leave my husband over a pair of football boots?!

Please help!
My husbands new football boots have nearly caused us to divorce!! They have literally stunk our house out for 2 weeks now, the smell is the most powerful intense smell and it’s got everywhere! It smells like a damp smell. He’s washed them thoroughly and used special sports shoe odour eaters on them but nothing is working, he doesn’t even think the smell is that bad - it’s horrendous!

Any advice? He won’t send them back or leave them outside so I’m literally thinking the only way to resolve this is to LTB!

To wonder if toddlers had tantrums 50 years ago?
My children are in their forties and I don't remember any tantrums (my marbles are intact).
They were vexed sometimes but no screaming/flailing on the floor.
Nothing to do with my parenting as I had 3 by age 23 and I made it up as I went along.
Perhaps the world was a quieter place. Children didn't go in supermarkets (there weren't any!); we left them outside in their prams/pushchairs while we shopped.
No nursery schools, just playgroups, which were smaller.
No plane trips or long train journeys. The world was a smaller, quieter, calmer place.
What do parents in their 50's, 60's think?
New to this so may not be able to get in to respond to posters, although I'll give it a go.

Am going to put pg tips in my sexy safety shoes that have got a bit pongy. Thankyou!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 11/10/2017 19:01

I’ve never met an ice hockey player with an intact sense of smell! They lose it somewhere around their second season of juniors I think! 😂

ClaraBowWasSoLovely · 11/10/2017 19:02

Posted in the wrong place - apologies. When if ever will I become computer literate

JonSnowIsMyKing · 11/10/2017 19:02

Chuck loads of sodium bicarbonate in and leave them for a while. It soaks up all the smell. Hoover out when done.

isaulte · 11/10/2017 19:03

My teenage son had a pair of football boots that smelt vile - i thought a cat had got into his bedroom and urinated everywhere. It turned out to be the boots - he was utterly oblivious to the stench. I made him keep them in the shed.

mummmy2017 · 11/10/2017 19:05

In the box with neutra air block

Weepatchesoflove · 11/10/2017 19:09

I feel your pain scampi my son had a pair of rugby boots two years ago that had the exact same problem. Can you contact the shop/company that you got them from? We ended up having to send them back and getting a different brand that were fine.
The smell is vile and there is no way that you can get rid of it. Funnily enough, my son wasn’t too bothered about it either and said none of his teammates had noticed it.

altiara · 11/10/2017 19:11

My DCs football boots smell like this!!! I have a cat and was seriously considering that maybe she peed in the football boots (she's 13 with no peeing in the house history). Getting teabags ready now!

maxrayeseth123 · 11/10/2017 19:14

My dh has a pair of evil trainers that reek to high heaven! I chucked surgical spirit in them and left to dry and hey presto the stink was banished never to return.... Smile

The80sweregreat · 11/10/2017 19:18

Put them in the shed maybe?

Doramaybe · 11/10/2017 19:26

Please just hand HIM the used teabag or bicarb or whatever, and get HIM to sort it out.

Sheesh why is everything to be sorted by women these days despite all the progress I thought was made.

But if you want to be his mother, ok do it for your sanity. I would just put them outside the back door and ban them from inside the house.

ParanoidBeryl · 11/10/2017 19:27

If they are only 2 weeks old I would send them back. Sounds like a manufacturing defect if it hasn't been a problem with his football boots previously or with his other shoes.

My podiatrist told me that.

Happyperson123 · 11/10/2017 19:31

@AndNoneForGretchenWieners never heard of that - but thanks I will try the teabag cure.

intimeandspace · 11/10/2017 19:35

How about getting one of those outdoor plastic boxes for garden equipment and put them in there. They will be outdoors but protected from the weather

RideOn · 11/10/2017 19:40

Put half an onion in each boot? I use that for bad smells but never had to use it on boots yet!

New boots for Christmas and as pp said keep these in his car boot until then?

WhatIsGoingOnNow · 11/10/2017 19:40

Could you not buy one of those plastic crates with a lid and when he wants to wear them take the crate outside, put boots on by sitting in car and leave the crate outside the front door. When he comes back put boots back, close lid and bring inside - at least it will be contained

Doramaybe · 11/10/2017 19:42

Are men incapable of noticing smells. NO. They expect the woman of the house to sort it out for them.

Grinds my gears the way you are all looking for solutions for this man's boots. He should be told they are going outside or else he is! LOL.

House4 · 11/10/2017 19:44

We have had this problem.
Only thing that works is to spray them with deodorant. Instant fix.
Let us know what withdraw for you

Ilovehamabeads · 11/10/2017 19:44

Urgh my DS had a pair of boots just like this. They stunk from the very first wear, like a mildewy cat pee. Nothing helped and I gave up in the end and bought a different brand. No problems since then. Cut your losses and buy him a different pair!

Grah0SoontobeaFitty · 11/10/2017 19:45

Try,
Arm and Hammer baking soda in a cloth bag stuffed in each one. Absorbs the odour in the fridge.

OR
Stuff in a Charcoal briquette or 2 in each one.
OR
Get him to stuff with newspaper after each use -not to set alight- but to get the paper to absorb the moisture,

Spookle · 11/10/2017 19:50

OnlyTheDepthVaries

I’m sure this was a common problem a few years back with a particular brand of football boot (can’t remember which). The smell was like cat pee and hideous. I think the shops ended up receiving the boots back as faulty.

My first thought was remembering this, it was all over the news. Go for the airtight box idea OP.

Mossend · 11/10/2017 19:50

As the mother of a footballler I totally get where you're coming from.
One of the pairs my son had smelt so much of cat pee that I couldn't keep them in the house.
Will def try the tea bag and see how that works

SparklyUnicornPoo · 11/10/2017 19:53

How long do you leave the teabag in for?

LittleWingSoul · 11/10/2017 19:56

OP... I sympathise! I could have written this a couple of weeks ago. Also pregnant, but his boots were so bad I made him keep them in the shed! I finally begged him to invest in a new pair and the divorce is back off the table Grin
