also wearing black clothing. Did anyone else have a granny like this. She used to hate black and women wearing trousers she used to hate it and would comment.

Cant remember how we dealt with it but did anyone else have a granny like this when they were younger?

I left (state) senior school in 1991, girls weren't allowed to wear trousers....

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 10/10/2017 23:21

I left school at 18 in 1977. Neither girls nor female teachers wore trousers.

My mother wore trousers from the 1970s. I never wear trousers.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 10/10/2017 23:26

My grandma only started wearing trousers above skirts when she hit her mid 80s, possibly because she was also widowed then and did more jobs/picked up the slack from grandad?

DM, DAunt and DCousin live in trousers but will happily skirt up if the occasion requires. I don't own trousers and actively refuse to wear them. I'm not comfortable in them. I've been doing it since I was 19 and I'm now 27. I don't give two hoots about what other people choose, though! I was also taught that a dress without tights - if you're going somewhere smart-£ is nearly always unacceptable and vulgar. This rule is still enforced at home and I do think it finishes outfits although there are weather-appropriate limits!

Papafran · 11/10/2017 06:43

My mother never wore trousers and when I was young girls weren't allowed to wear trousers to school and it's only in the last 20 years that female teachers were allowed to wear them

Female teachers were not allowed to wear trousers in the 90s?? What sort of parallel universe did I go to school in then? If you had written your post in 1968, that would probably have been true.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 11/10/2017 07:00

My grandma always wears trousers but my late nan she always wore a dress and tights with her cardigan and apron over the top she use to ride her bike in a dress I never ever saw her in trousers.

Margomyhero · 11/10/2017 07:12

As I read this thread I realised that I have never seen Mil wear anything but skirts. DH said that she hasnt ever worn trousers. She is 78. .

notacooldad · 11/10/2017 07:29

I distinctly remember my primary teacher wearing trousers and even more shockingly cut off denim shorts. I started school in 1970. I rang up my mum to check this out to make sure I didn't have a false memory but she confirmed it. Mum also said this teacher wore halter neck t shirts in summer and that was seen to be outrageous!

This has got me thinking. I went to a convent school for secondary and teachers, who were all women, wore suits/dresses and academic gowns. We had a physics teacher who was plainly a butch lesbian, but had to wear dresses, unbecoming shifts with weird lace collars, which clashed with her Eton crop and unmade up face.

There was change of HT (though still a nun), and immediately the gowns went, the teachers wore trousers suits/ dresses as and when. The physics teacher was immediately translated into trousers/jackets/ subtly tweedy suits/open-necked shirts. She looked at ease, pleased and happier (though she did not look miserable before). This thread has made me think how oppressive dress can be.

echt · 11/10/2017 07:37

Should have said the time period was late 60s to early 70s.

Subtlecheese · 11/10/2017 07:47

My great nan was a WW2 ambulance driver and briefly a land girl. She definitely wore trousers! She wore them mainly day to day after that. My gran wore skirts to work and trousers pretty much the rest of the time she was very glam with it Too! She hated her work skirts as she was quite short and work skirts (of a suitable length) made her look shorter. She's have loved to wear trousers to work But BT employees in her area were not allowed to. Crackers.

Subtlecheese · 11/10/2017 07:53

To add I wasn't allowed trousers at school (left in mid 90's). I have been asked not to wear trousers in two jobs. I feel akward and ridiculous in skirts after being voted selcond scruffiest by my teacher's at school. (I was taken into care for neglect about 6 months before that "award". Nice). My daughters both choose skirts. I am fine with that as they fortunately don't have my issues about my appearance.

Cantseethewoods · 11/10/2017 07:57

Another one with a WW2 nan. Mine used to check planes. I never saw her in a skirt - only trousers ( which she referred to as 'slacks'). My other Gran was a farmer and so I imagine she wore trousers too.

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 11/10/2017 09:43

I have always worn trousers until recent years - even getting into trouble wearing them on teaching practice in 2001as a mature student ( early forties) . Yes 2001, apparently the male head insisted on all female staff wearing skirts or dresses. I ignored .
My mum (85) always used to wear trousers because "Dad didn't like trousers" Hmm . She discovered how comfortable they are whilst on a windy holiday once and now wears them loads . Not sure what Dad thinks Grin
I do recall that "smart" when a child in the 70s always meant a skirt or dress.
My gran born in early 20th century never wore trousers.

However, after many years of never wanting to wear skirts I now often wear shorter or knee length with woolly tights , even at the weekend. And dresses in the summer.

Jux · 11/10/2017 10:43

Subtlecheese, your great nan was a WW2 driver?? My aunt was a WW2 ambulance driver!!!! How much is that generational difference?! You are a stripling!! Never feel old! Always know that I'm 2 generations ahead of you Grin

Jux · 11/10/2017 10:45

Blush rather a lot of !! there. Apologies.

WhyteKnyght · 11/10/2017 10:45

Our school only allowed skirts for girls and, as far as I'm aware, still does. Completely standard still in many (most?) private schools AFAIK. We were happy enough and didn't really give it any thought. We had games skirts for hockey but joggers for standard PE. I was horrified, though, to discover that my friend's all-girls school made them wear tiny sports knickers for PE! Now that I would have hated...

MrsHathaway · 11/10/2017 10:46

Yes, Jux, the generations on this thread are fascinating!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/10/2017 11:23

My DM went back to teaching when I turned 5 in the mid-60s, she often wore trousers to work (mostly Crimplene trouser suits Grin)

She and MIL (who'd be a hundred by now) nearly always wore 'slacks' in their later years.

I don't remember ever seeing DM in black, she just didn't like it (didn't mind me wearing it). Funerals in our family were generally rather jolly celebrations of a life rather than occasions for mourning clothes.

FineSally · 11/10/2017 11:29

Jux, Mrs Hathaway... tbh that's one of the things that fascinates me about MN in general. I think I'm one of the older ladies around. It's amazing comparing what I know of my great grandmother's life (and my mothers) with my grandchildren's generation. (strangely I seem to remember very little detail of my grandmother, I seem to have spent more time with my ggm. I was 24 when she died).

Natsku · 11/10/2017 11:36

My granny wore trousers. She must have worn skirts/dresses too but I can only ever remember her in brightly coloured shell suits (my memories are all from the 90s!)

Cath2907 · 11/10/2017 11:43

My gran never left the house without putting on a skirt and a pair of high heals. She had some house "slacks" that she wore indoors with her housecoat.

InsomniacAnonymous · 11/10/2017 11:46

If my father was alive he'd be 108 and yet my daughter is only 26! I bet that's unusual.

TheScottishPlay · 11/10/2017 11:49

I'm mid 40s. My grannies wore trousers. As did my female teachers.

NotEntirelyWhelmed · 11/10/2017 12:17

I wear black trousers to weddings.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 11/10/2017 12:24

Thinking about it my gm only ever wore skirts or dresses.
My own mum thought it was scandalous not to wear tights under skirts (except on holiday) and wouldn't believe that my school uniform allowed bare legs. That said my first job (circa y2k) you were allowed bare legs, but only on the condition they were tanned!!
