To ask for you nice but not too fancy London restaurant recommendations?

Apologies for posting in AIBU for traffic...

Trying to find a nice restaurant in London for a special occasion, just my husband and I. I wouldn't class either of us as particularly fussy eaters, however most of the high rated restaurants have menus which just don't look to our taste.

I want good food, but nothing too unusual. I know this makes me look incredibly bland and boring but snails and foie gras just aren't for us really.

Does anyone have any personal recommendations I can have a look into?! Budget wise wouldn't want to spend more than £250 for the both of us.

3 slightly more unknown places I would recommend - the first is the Game Bird at the Stafford Hotel. It's in St James right near Green Park. I eat out a lot (2-3 times a week) in London and this is the best place I've been to in years. Not the cheapest, but should come in under your budget. The venue is beautiful, it's very intimate and the service & food magnificent. You can also go for cocktails nearby at Dukes Bar, which is where Ian Fleming used to drink and where he invented the 'Vesper' of Casino Royale fame.

Bokan is the restaurant on top of the Novotel in Canary wharf. I was put off by the fact that it's on top of a Novotel, but I was totally wrong; the chef is fantastic and the views stunning. It's on the 38th floor and there's a lovely terrace bar on 39 as well. The cocktails got a great write up from my friends (I don't drink).

If you want something a bit more adventurous, Sushi Atelier on Great Portland Street is a fantastic new sushi place. Lovely fish, beautifully presented and a calm atmosphere and great service. The chef's choice platter is really interesting.

Wherever you choose, I hope you have a wonderful time!

Yet another vote for Rules and Hawksmoor here!

SeaLionsOnMyShirt · 10/10/2017 11:42

I've been going to Rules regularly since I was a child (favourite family restaurant!) but I was a bit disappointed when I last went, as I felt the food wasn't up to it's usual high standards (plus they couldn't do much that hadn't been pre-marinaded in garlic). But usually they are excellent. I'd also recommend Pont de La Tour, Oxo Tower & Brasserie Zedel as mentioned above plus the NorthBank restaurant by the Millennium Bridge.

The Delaunay if you want romantic - the lighting is fantastic, very glamourous - more so than the Wolsley.

Also Andrew Edmunds is gorgeous. But a bit more rustic.

Dinner is less romantic in its setting, but the service and the food are a whole different league - as you'd expect of somewhere in The Mandarin Oriental.
