Aibu to not buy a cooker if I have a child to cook for?

I split up with partner a few months ago and just moved into our house just two of us.
I won't lie its cost a fortune and just paid £800 for carpets.
At the moment I can't afford a cooker so I've bought a mini oven with grill and 2 hot plates all powered by electricity.
Both of those was only £65 and I can cook a roast/cake/fry a egg/pasta ..basically everything you would want to cook can be done.
My partner came around to collect our child and sneered at me for not having a cooker,as if I was neglecting our child.
Please tell me I'm not being stupid?

Not stupid at all. I have a halogen oven, hot plate and slow cooker. No actual cooker and it works fine for us and costs a lot less than it would heating a whole oven.

Absolutely not. You can cook everything you can in a cooker on the appliances you have. As long as you are giving your child filling and nutritious meals it doesn't matter what you cook them on.
If you had no means of cooking at all and were intending on feeding your child sandwiches and cereal indefinitely there would be an issue, but frankly, here there is no issue at all. Ignore him.

Ignore your ex, but I have a feeling that will use a lot of electricity. I recommend you invest in a slow cooker. You can get them for fairly cheap from Argos.

It’s fine, it’s a cooker just mini but I understand your ex can’t get his tiny brain to understand that.

I do have a slow cooker too which I do use quite a lot,especially in the winter for casseroles etc.

It's fine. I have a cooker but only 2 hobs and the oven work - ex threw my microwave at it and fucked the grill and front 2 hobs. I've managed for 3 years with it.

What's his problem with it exactly? You can still cook food and if he's so concerned about it tell him to feel free to buy you a cooker.

I live in Hong Kong, and I can tell you that most of us have table top ovens just like that!
In fact my one looks to be even smaller than that. We also have two rings, albeit induction.

Pay no heed to your ex. Carry on and enjoy your new cooker.
Of course you can cook well using all those items. Ugh. Stupid ex.

I coped very well with both of those when I first left ex. They are both cookers! Plus you can cook loads in slow cookers!!

My and my Exh had one of these when we were married 20 odd years ago, they are fine!

If your Ex is so concerned that you don't have a full size oven i dare say he can offer to pay for one, can't he?

I think what you have is fine but if you live anywhere near East Sussex I have just removed an electric oven and gas hob that you are welcome to have , nothing wrong with either but I’m replacing the kitchen so they are surplus .

Ignore your ex, he is trying to make you feel bad. The only benefit of a full sized oven over one of these is space. Most of the time you don't need that much space! Actually we lived without an oven for some months, the day we got one of these was very exciting We'd been trying to bake stuff in the microwave-and-grill!

I suggest not to let him into your home at all in future. Have your child ready in advance then he can wait at the door. He's not a guest and nor does he need to be welcome.

The fact you only has 2 working hob rings whilst with him suggests he’s not all that switched in about the mechanics of cooking.

Cookers are expensive, and then you have to have them fitted. Not much change out of half a grand.

Long term would be an issue for me with no cooker, but short term with a microwave and toaster etc would be OK.

Oh I just noticed that you are getting a mini cooker thingy. Yeah that should do for quite a while, just for 2!

YANBU - I only had one of these for several years. I used to host dinner parties with it! It's really not a problem to cook for 2 on 2 rings and a hot plate!

Perfectly sufficient for now. I have a combi microwave with grill and oven setting and I rarely use the cooker now!

The priority is that your child is well fed. How you achieve that is irrelevant.

Years ago I ate only camp fire cooked food for 4 months. I was far healthier than I am now!

Ask him what food your child will be missing out on? Does he cook them Michelin starred 5 course meals when he is looking after them? I bet he doesn't run to more than beans on toast! He is just picking at you and being an arse.

You've got all you need and it's entirely sensible for you to prioritise your spending whilst you establish your new home. FWIW, I've got a standard 4 ring hob and cook a lot, often for upto 6 people, and I honestly can't remember the last time I used more than 2 rings at 1 time anyway. If your ex is going to be sneering, judgemental dick when in your house maybe you'd be better telling him to wait on the other side of your front door when he comes to collect your child.
