To not want to hear a movie from one of the student houses at 2AM!!!!

Couldn't sleep last night because one of the student houses down my street decided that they were in the cinema and had to have their tv blasting. They were watching either a scary horror or porn with the amount of screaming and 'f*cking take that' etcetc that we could hear. I really thought a neighbour was being beaten, until I listened and heard the crappy background music. I had to close my bedroom windows. I don't know who owns the houses here, i think its a few landlords, but can I complain to the uni??

what happens here is the 1st year students are on compas, after a year they have to find their own rooms in private houses, unfortunety that means that a huge amount of houses on the estate are students.

We have had people blasting horns at 1am. Parties going on till 4am, which was about 10 houses away and it still sounded like I was there.

i don't know which house was it tho, I thought that maybe the uni. could send out something along the lines of 'please repect your neighbours'

I would complain to the uni if I were you.
My brother is at uni at the moment and he & his friends have received warnings and threats of fines from the uni for just this kind of thing.

webcrone · 10/04/2007 10:43

Ring the sccommodation office at the Uni and ask them what you can do.

If the accommodation is let to the Uni and then sub-let to the students (quite rare) then the Uni has some responsibility. If the accommodation is rented direct from a landlord/agency (much more likely) then they have responsibility. You'd probably need to know which house though.

Alternatively, you (and your neighbours?) could write a letter asking for some neighbourly respect or you'll need to take it further, and post it through all the doors.

HTH

During the day and most of the time, we have no trouble, but when they are loud, they are LOUD!!!

I used to live opposite a hall of residence and the students were very noisy. You should be able to complain to the university, I did and they were very apologetic and even sent someone round to tell them to be quiet. How about actually going round yourself and asking them (nicely) to be quiet? Console yourself with the fact that they'll probably be gone in June!

SparklyGothKat · 10/04/2007 11:00

I really don;t think they would have heard me knocking if I had gone round last night. I think I will phone the uni.

Unfortnately once landlords have taken their money, they are notoriously hard to get hold of and don't really care what their tenants are getting up to. You've seen student hovels right?!
Call environmental health. I think you can call the local council to get hold of them.

PeachyChocolateEClair · 10/04/2007 11:01

Yes you can complain to the Uni, they don't like anything like that

Mond you the only quiet eprson in 6this^ house is the student (me). Sigh.......

Sterny · 10/04/2007 11:03

How about going round sometime during the day and waking them up for a change! I went round a few times and told the students near me to shut up and they were really shy and humble once I'd done it

SparklyGothKat · 10/04/2007 11:03

I don't know about the hovels, these are brand new built houses. Luckily for me the houses are very well sound proofed and once I closed all my bedroom windows (which I hate doing, I like windows open) the noise went away. But all they had to do was closed their bloodly windows, if they need it up that loud.

My brother stayed last night, and he has a very noisy car, so I hope he woke them up at 8am when he left

I dont think any amount of noise can wake a student, can it?

PeachyChocolateEClair · 10/04/2007 11:43

No youre probably right, the younger ones certainly cant manage an alrm for a lecture at say, ooooh 3.30 pm!

We had a similar problem last summer - the house next door is let out in bedsits and at one stage we had one lot watching loud tv with the windows open (sometimes until 2 in the morning) and another guy talking to his girlfriend on skype or something, all day, again at full volume (fortunately/unfortunately he was Polish so couldn't hear anything juicy!). Very annoying in the summer that we couldn't sit in the garden in peace or leave bedroom windows open at night. Luckily the culprits seem to have left (a new couple moved in recently and I gave them an earful the first evening when they were playing their stereo loudly with the window open when the kids were trying to go to sleep - seems to have done the trick)

If it continues I would report it to Environmental Health at the council and start keeping a log of incidents - in our area they are pretty good at tackling this sort of thing....
