Expecting the nursery my children go to to rinse 'soiled' clothing

Tne nursery Health and Safety Officers have been on a course and seen some 'guidance from the 'Environmental Health Office'. The nursery are now saying they will no longer rinse or soak soiled clothes as there is an increased risk of the spread of infection if they do this. Ds is potty trained already(dd not but not old enough yet) so rarely has an accident but this does seem ridiculous. Are they going to stop wiping children's bums in future as well?
My dh, who is a doctor, is now saying he isn't going to touch any of his patients in case he gets blood, spit, pooh, vomit etc on him as he might catch something I have just about managed to stop him writing a letter back at the moment.......

Nursery- never, just tied up in a bag (fine by me, no different from washable nappies). DS1's school however washes any dirty clothes, and sends them home, with an apology if there hasn't been time to dry them. Bliss.

Same here, tied up in a bag, once.

The only thing I will add is that my CM wouldn't dream of sending my son home with soiled clothes. She

UCM · 11/04/2007 01:08

Sorry didn't realised that I pressed send.

She washes stuff and keeps it at her home for future use as I provide other things for him to wear.

All this nursery stuff does is make me think that DS should stay at my CM until he is 5 and HAS to got to school. I know I am looking at the 5 free sessions, but quite frankly I think nursery is awful, they are expected to behave for one, and when I go to pick him up they have them sitting in a circle on little chairs, and your kid can't get up until you walk in. They all sit there really good and I sort of think this aint right.

Never been greeted with pooey pants from nursery but did get weed in pants back in plastic bags when potty training was in progress.TBH I do not think they have a washing machine there. It is a private nursery.Staff lovely and children happy so it is only a minor inconvenience.

I have a sink in my laundry room which I have rinsed out hundreds of dirty nappies into. It's just occured to me that in the UK I would have had to rinse them into a sink that we washed or prepared food in - yuk.

bozza · 11/04/2007 08:36

Franny DD's nursery has a washing machine but they don't wash soiled clothes. And with pooey pants I either rinse them out in the kitchen sink first or throw them away. DH put a pair of only lightly soiled pants in the machine and they came out with "clean" poo in them. so I had to wash everything else again. TBH this is hardly an issue for me these days. The above pants were due to DD being poorly.

mine dont rinse
agree theyd need a sluice
we use the skin int he gargae

FrannyandZooey · 11/04/2007 09:05

Bozza you were asking what we did at home - we are past the poo stage now but when we washed our own nappy wraps we would rinse them out in the shower - not in a sink used for washing dishes or hands, no

kslatts · 11/04/2007 09:23

My dd's never pooed in their pants at nursery, but came home a few times with wet clothes. I wouldn't expect the nursey to rinse out poo.

elliott · 11/04/2007 09:27

If nurseries don't have a washing machine, how on earth do they launder all the things they need to care for the children? -i.e. towels, bedrolls, flannels, overalls, cleaning cloths, tea towels etc etc. I just don't see how a functioning daycare facility that looks after babies and toddlers all day can possibly work without a washing machine. In fact, I'm pretty sure that even the preschool nursery at our local school has a washing machine. I've always received rinsed out clothes from nurseries.

mrsgenehunt · 11/04/2007 09:27

no, would not xpect nursery to rinse out poo, where exactly, put it in nappy sac is abslutely fine.
at my ds nursery (long time ago) they did use gloves to change nappies though

mrsgenehunt · 11/04/2007 09:29

i used to rinse out pooy pants in the loo flush! lost a pair of knickers that way though

bozza · 11/04/2007 09:33

Well maybe I have bad hygiene habits then - I have always rinsed them out in either the downstairs toilet basin or kitchen sink. Still we too are past the poo stage. And I wouldn't expect them to rinse the pants in the nursery kitchen sink, but would not have an objection to the hand basin in the toilets.

FrannyandZooey · 11/04/2007 13:07

Fair enough, I don't really object to people doing it at home (if they wash the sink afterwards ) but wouldn't want this to happen in a nursery where my child will be washing their hands in the sink afterwards. The sinks should be clean to start with and having had poo swilled about in them regularly is going to make that a lot less likely.
