What do you all think? Is it a good thing or a bad thing? Or somewhere in between.

I hate the feeling of drunkenness but like feeling tipsy, however I avoid it now as makes me feel anxious/depressed the following day.

I don't like getting drunk either, but I do enjoy that merry/tipsy feeling.
I don't like drinking so much you spend the whole of the next day recovering.

I have nothing against a gin & tonic prior to eating, good wine with a meal or a glass of champagne to celebrate a special occasion.
I would even tolerate the odd, properly made cocktail.
Drinking deliberately so much as to get totally legless seems to me to be a complete waste of time.
Any "concocted" drinks, such as alcopops etc. are just marketing to draw in a less-discerning audience.
Nothing against younger members of the family having a small beer or cider or even a glass of wine with food either.

It's like anything else - it depends how you use it. If you are using it to drown out your unhappiness, it's bad - because it will fail to do that. It's a depressant and in the long run will lower your mood. My DH is an alcoholic, just going into his last week of rehab. He is a different person off the booze.

Me, I can take it or leave it. I enjoy a glass of wine or a G&T but it makes no difference to me whether I am having that as a treat or a slice of home-made cake, a cordial with fizzy water in a festive glass or anything else, really.

You aren't drinking at hazardous levels at all, but you have the insight to see that alcohol may not be your friend. So you have that wisdom already. Keep going with the counselling and learn to love yourself and then you will have the choice.

I make my own booze. The quality is highly variable, but the cost makes it very attractive.

Currently chugging back a pint of dandelion and burdock root beer, this batch is actually rather nice.
