To move to Cornwall?

Just that really. I really fancy it and so does my bf. Neither of really love our jobs and are paid at market rate so could get the same elsewhere.

The cost of living where we are is very high, we are in driving distance from Cambridge as we were both born there and grew up there but had to move away a bit to afford the rent on a flat rather than a room in a shared house.

We will both be 30 next year and I am conscious that life is going on past me. We rent and have no children. Our family are here but they could come and visit or we could visit them, it's only really my mum I can imagine being the sticking point.

Could anyone suggest nice places, with good transport links in Cornwall? What are jobs like etc?

Help!

What kind of area do you when in. Cheaper area's with work are tricky... In and around Exeter?

Try Bath and North East Somerset. If your partner can transfer to one if the govt agencies, as they seem to be semi reinventing govt offices, that's good. Beware the MOD: perpetual redundancy/cuts. Bristol and Bath themselves expensive but not all the places outside.

Have a look at job availability before making any decisions. I say that as someone raised in Cornwall, work is scarce and seasonal and minimum wage. Transport is terrible, it's not even like ok there is a bus but it runs twice a day or something- there might not be any bus for where you need to go. There is only one trainline with single lines off of it like to Newquay, but it's incredibly expensive. I miss my Oyster card! Healthcare is pretty bad, I've been back for coming up a year and I've yet to be able to register with a dentist, no one has room. The one major hospital is next to a very busy college so it can be a nightmare to get to appointments, and parking is pretty bad there too. While the place has improved since I was a teen- we have cheaper shops now! and Primark! and McDonalds! it's still not a great place to live, for practical reasons.

I moved here from Leicestershire 7 yrs ago. I love it. The 'shoulder seasons' are best when the weather is nice-ish but it isn't too busy. But both crazy busy summer and the quieter charm of winter I love too.

You can find work, especially if you are flexible about what you will do. The tourism jobs are more available in summer but the season has got longer and longer. Businesses that used to close October to March do so much less now than even say... 5 years ago.

And there is stuff for young people to do. Loads of festivals in summer, beach types probably have the best time growing up here... they just surf or row rather than go to do err... other stuff.

There are more benefits than challenges for me, certainly.

Did it 12 years ago. Loved every minute of it. Community is fantastic. So welcoming. Great local shops and food. Pubs are best! One big thing you are being advised about is 100% wrong is jobs! You need a completely different mind set to live here. Don't look for jobs look for INCOME. Jobs are just part of that. A huge proportion of people here are self employed. You may need to look at 2 or 3 sources of income. Relying on one well paid his is rare. We both work around 30 hours a week plus I have an online business. We do a little bnb which is seasonal and my partner does another self employed activity. We only do hat we enjoy doing and have plenty of time to enjoy the area. In all 5 sources of income . This is very common here.

olenna Avon doesn't exist. It was abolished in 1996!
But yes, somewhere around the Bristol area might be better. Reasonable transport links and you have Bristol and Bath if you fancy a bit of city time. It's touristy in the summer, but not as bad as Cornwall.

This is rather late, but omg, if you don't have kids yet you are so free! Go apply for Australia visas, new Zealand, Tobago. travel, do not feel tied down.
This is as free as you will ever be! ..before your parents get too old. Your bound by impossible school situations. The world is large and life is short. Save some money get a camper van and explore!!
