To ask what movie scene never fails to make you cry even after numerous watches

I’m watching Moana with the kids today, for the billionth time (I don’t mind as I love the film) and no matter how hard I try I always cry at the scene where the grandma tells Moana to go and find Maui, then she’s dies and her spirit fish swims into the sea and above Moana. You’d think I would be immune to it by now, but no!

What makes you cry every time?

I love Big Fish such a lovely film.😭

RiseToday · 06/10/2017 13:20

Ha you must've had 'away' on the brain Grin

CastAway is such a brilliant film. Tom Hanks is spectacular. Helen Hunt is also amazing. I need to watch the whole thing now. That's the plan for tomorrow and I'll be hungover too so plenty of tears will be flowing!

loopylou6 · 06/10/2017 13:21

Ghost

Mittens1969 · 06/10/2017 13:22

Love Actually, the funeral for the wife of Liam Neeson’s character, we first saw it less than a month after my FIL died in a car accident, gets me every time. Then Emma Thompson comes up with one of the worst ever lines, ‘No one wants to shag a cry baby.’ The man has just lost his wife, you know, I doubt that will be a major concern right now.

But yes, ET as well, when ET is dying, even though I obviously know the end now. Grin

alltoomuchrightnow · 06/10/2017 13:23

I just made the mistake of youtubing the ending of Big Fish and now sat here bawling with makeup running down my face!
Also most of the Elephant Man, and Laura's death in Fire Walk With Me

Lotsawobblybits · 06/10/2017 13:25

Oh geeze I had forgotten about CastAway- when poor Wilson floats away.

The Green Mile. Tom Hanks appears to be responsible for a lot of tears!

The Impossible- a film with Ewan McGregor in about the Boxing Day Tsunami, heartbreaking.

Mittens1969 · 06/10/2017 13:26

And yes, Splendidisolation, all of Watership Down makes me well up, I liked the book better though.

alltoomuchrightnow · 06/10/2017 13:27

Robin Williams meeting his dog again in the afterlife...though anything with RW in will now make me cry, he was/is my favourite actor...

hellocleveland · 06/10/2017 13:28

So many films but most recent was 'I Daniel Blake' , the food bank scene and the end. I locked myself in the loo for 15 mins at cinema bawling my eyes out. I'm seeing it again next week at a screening with Ken Loach in attendance. I hope I can hold it together.

Freezingwinter · 06/10/2017 13:28

The part where Shadow the golden retriever gets home in Homeward Bound Shock it makes me feel sick with crying!
Also Toy Story 3 when Andys mom cries..

MinesaPinot · 06/10/2017 13:29

Here's mine:

'Daddy, my daddy' from the Railway Children

Carousel - when they sing "If I loved you" and "You'll never walk alone"

Kenneth Branagh's version of Frankenstein, when the monster (Robert Di Niro) meets the blind man (Richard Briers) and RB feels all over the monster's face and says "you poor soul, what have they done to you"

The end of the Dambusters, when the crews are all coming into the canteen after the raid and the camera pans to a table set up for a crew you know aren't coming home, and the silent shots of the rooms of the men who aren't coming back, with clocks just ticking.

And when the Mother Superior sings "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" in the Sound of Music, mainly because it was my late dad's favourite.

There's definitely more, but will have to stop as I'm in work, and I'm welling up.....

EllyOlly · 06/10/2017 13:29

"It's not your fault" Good Will Hunting sob

MinesaPinot · 06/10/2017 13:30

And how could I forget ET, when ET's flower dies and Elliot realises he's gone..... Gets me Every. Single. Time

2cats2many · 06/10/2017 13:33

"Daddy, my Daddy!" scene in The Railway Children and the "I know you love me!" scene in Terms of Endearment.

I've got tears in my eyes just thinking about them 😭

Taylia · 06/10/2017 13:37

End of gladiator
Start of up
Forrest Gump where he's talking to Jenny's gravestone

Captain Phillips -when the severity of what tom hanks' character has been through hits him.

Killi and Thorins deaths in the hobbit

Beaches
Million dollar baby end scenes

Seven pounds

The impossible

PressPaws · 06/10/2017 13:39

Yes to Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting.

Also DD went through a period of watching Brave and I always got teary at the end where Merida thinks she's failed to break the spell. "I just want you back. I want you back, mummy." Gahhhhh.

Also Finding Dory, DH and I both in tears.

And the end of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - "Enjoy it."

I cry at movies a lot.

Fatbird71 · 06/10/2017 13:42

Another for Dead Poet's Society and also the end of Schindler's List where the survivors put the stones on his grave. I was sobbing out loud in the cinema the first time I saw that. VERY embarrassing.

MsGameandWatching · 06/10/2017 13:42

Last of the Mohicans where Uncas is killed and Alice follows him over the cliff. I'm welling up just thinking about it.

Whisper23 · 06/10/2017 13:48

Sixth Sense, the bit when they're in the car stuck in traffic and the boy tells his mum that her (dead) mum said the answer to her question is "every day". He asks his mum what the question was and she chokes out "do I make you proud?" Seen in about six times and it makes me sob everytime.

ScouseQueen · 06/10/2017 13:48

The montage in Up
AI, where she leaves him in the forest, and the ending
Atonement, where we see Robbie at war and Celia in the tube station
Sex and the City, Miranda's mum's death and funeral

just5morepeas · 06/10/2017 13:49

Adding another vote for the ending of Railway Children:

The end of ET when he has to leave always gets me too. "Come" and "Stay" and then the Mum sinks to her knees watching them hug and I'm in floods of tears!

And it's not a film but one thing that got me properly ugly sobbing recently was the ending of Stranger Things when Eleven and Mike are talking right at the end and he's telling her to hold on just a bit longer and she'll come to live with him and she can eat Eggos and they'll go to the dance together and she's crying and says "Promise?"

Well. Ugly sobbing from me. I was in bits!

MsGameandWatching · 06/10/2017 13:51

A more recent one was Sully, with Tom Hanks - what is it about that man? I was gripped and close to tears throughout that movie. He was so calm and brave.

Seren85 · 06/10/2017 13:53

Dumbo (when his Mum is in the trailer and he's outside). Genuinely welling up thinking about it.

The scene from 3 Men and a baby where they sing to the baby. Only because I watched it as a child the day my nana died so it is inescapably linked in my mind, I think.

thegreenlight · 06/10/2017 13:54

Totally tombstone of the fireflies! All of it, especially when the little boy dies all alone in the train station and no body even notices Sad though plague dogs (another bleak animation from the makers of the joy filled wWatership down about dogs used in vivisection that escape but there is a horrifically sad ending) may be the saddest film ever made - properly affected me for YEARS after watching it.

SheGotOffThePlane · 06/10/2017 13:55

Not a movie, but the last ever episode of Friends. (Hence the username)
As soon as I see Ross getting back to the flat and listening to the answer phone message that's me away Grin
Once it was on TV when I was watching with dh.. He just looked at like I was mad.
