To ask what car insurers your teens have?

My head is aching and my eyes are bleeding! Not to mention fingers aching from keying in details all day!

Who are your teens insured with? And do they have black boxes? I have quotes ranging from 900-1700 for a first time driver aged almost (in 4 weeks) 19 year old boy. I have no idea if the black box is a good thing or not - friends and family have mixed feelings on them.

Any info you fancy sharing for comparison gratefully received!

I’m with co-op and have a back box and they just took my insurance premium down by £400 for good Driving! (Passed in May, am 19) although my car insurance was £2,500 a year to start with.

TittyGolightly · 06/10/2017 18:15

Yes I wondered if it will go up once he's passed which I am hoping the box will help with. The car is a 1.2 Skoda, seems very cheap insurance for the size of car but is an old man's type car which may help?

With new drivers it's very little to do with the car itself: it's the likelihood of the damage they could do to other people.

biscuiteater · 06/10/2017 18:24

I can see your point TittyGolightly but what I found interesting is the Skoda Fabia and VW Polo are the same spec car, almost identical, different badges but big difference in insurance like for like for DS. I believe it's cost of parts and likelihood of being stolen as well as age of driver that has a factor on price. This led us to buying Skoda as it's a lower insurance group than VW equivalent.

TittyGolightly · 06/10/2017 18:36

Yep. Skoda is less attractive to most people.

Scholes34 · 06/10/2017 18:36

We insured 18 year old DS for one month for about an additional £100 on our MoreThan insurance. He's now at uni, so no point paying for him whilst he's away and not driving.

TittyGolightly · 06/10/2017 18:37

(I used to work in insurance so I doknow what I'm talking about.)

Magpiemagpie · 06/10/2017 18:40

A friends daughter has had several accidents this year ( she is a crap driver TBF) and Is 18 years old .
She was paying monthly and the insurance company has refused to renew her this year unless she pays up,front almost 4k
Everywhere else is even more money

Magpiemagpie · 06/10/2017 18:43

I think som black boxes restrict thr driving time as well or there is a penalty after midnight
It was no good for my son who works late nights
Wait till he is 19 and do some quote now as a 19 year old
I used Hastings for my son on a 1.0 fiesta it was £1200 no black box

biscuiteater · 06/10/2017 18:49

Titty they are good cars, much better than I was expecting. Skoda have come on a long way since VW took them over. No restrictions for night driving on Admiral black box Magpie.

TittyGolightly · 06/10/2017 18:50

I know. There's one sitting on my drive. Grin

biscuiteater · 06/10/2017 18:54

👍

17 dd went with Insure the box at £860 with her as the policyholder and dh and I as named drivers. Her renewal came in last month at £695 which we were more than happy with especially as she wrote her first car off after a month!

thatdearoctopus · 06/10/2017 19:08

We used Tesco Black Box for dd - about 1100 I think, but she was penalised because someone had bumped into her when she was a learner, and some companies quoted crazy prices because of that. Angry
The premium halved the second year.

nocake · 06/10/2017 19:15

Black box insurance generally doesn't have curfews any more after a teen died rushing to drive home to beat a curfew. Your driving score will be lower during riskier times of day, such as late at night, but there will be no penalty.

Bluetrews25 · 06/10/2017 19:40

NFU mutual did us a good deal, and gave 1 year's NCD after he'd done the pass plus course.

Imustbemad00 · 06/10/2017 20:19

I passed my test at 29. 11 year old fiesta and quotes over £2000 (central London) i researched and quoted every company going and cheapest was always go skippy. Got it down to £1800 with my mum as a named driver. After a year it dropped to £900 at renewal. Got lots of quotes go skippy still the cheapest. £900 seems dirt cheap after paying £160 a month last year plus a hefty deposit.
I wouldn't get a black box personally, It would make me drive worse with paranoia
