Not to expect some @@@@@@ to steal my handbag from right under my nose???

Happy Easter everyone

I just need to get this off my chest so I thought I would vent my anger in the fantastic AIBU thread!

I am sooooo cross at horrible theif who stole my bag. I was sitting having lunch with a friend, in a very quiet cafe in Edinburgh near my work. When I got up to go my handbag was GONE. It was under my feet so the theif literally stole it from right under my (and my friend's) nose. The cafe was deserted, just us and another couple of ladies at another table so I have no idea how the theif managed to get my bag.

Whoever they were they struck lucky as I happened to have sold my pram the night before I was therefore carrying £170 of cash, not to mention my cards, mobile, keys, diary etc. I feel so naked without my stuff.

The police could not have been less interested and it has caused me no end of hassle and expense to sort it all out.

So a word of advice ladies - HOLD ONTO YOUR HANDBAGS!

Hoping for some sympathy

omg you poor, poor thing!

what an awful thing to happen.

compo · 09/04/2007 15:04

Did the cafe owner/worker notice anything?

Chickbabymummy · 09/04/2007 15:06

Bugger - that's just awful

justbeme · 09/04/2007 15:07

Do they have cctv around the area?

IdreamofClooney · 09/04/2007 15:08

The cafe was staffed by two yopung girls who showed v little interest when I pointed out what had happened.

One school of thought is that it might have been the staff as I suppose you wouldn't pay as much attention if them came to your table, but neither of us noticed anyone anywhere near us the whole time - it is really quite scary that someone can steal your bag (ie your whole life details really) without anyone even batting an eyelid.

I told the police I thought it was a "professional hand bag theif" only to be laughed at as apparently "you don't get them in Edinburgh"!!! hmmmmmm

Oh, how awful and upsetting.

As a precaution, if the handbag is sitting on the floor, I always hang the strap over my knee (if it's a long strap), or over my foot (a bit awkward, but been safe so far). Not so easy to do though if I've had a few glasses of wine....

Sorry to hear this - how horribly frustrating esp with the response of the police. No matter how dearly beloved Edinburgh is to me, it still has it's fair share of petty thieves. Fingers crossed that there is a positive outcome.

themoon66 · 09/04/2007 15:34

sounds like the staff did it to be honest. You would remember seeing a total stranger invading your space.

IdreamofClooney · 09/04/2007 15:45

Is just crap really, am having a bit of a crap time as it is (just spilt up with partner, started new job, trying to sell flat etc) then this happens.

I just do not know who people who steal like that sleep at night.

Was just so thrilled to have sold my pram (sad at same time as had kept it for future babies that I now won't have) then someone steals my money just like that.

I am going to be so careful from now on - am actually considering wearing a bum bag

Oh how horrible! Just remember, what goes around comes around, so your horrible thief will get what's coming to him/her. Not much consolation I know

Fingers crossed that wonderful things happen to you soon x

I have heard something like this before, the handbag was under the table and someone (not staff) tried to take the handbag. Luckily they were spotted before they could take it.

I had my handbag stolen from work in January and it really upset me so I'm talking from experience here, sorry that your's was stolen. I would never have expected to be bothered so much, it made me cry, and I am still angry with whoever did it. My bag was open at the time and they could have just taken my purse. I would still have been p*d off but not as much somehow.
It is horrible thinking back to when it happened and wondering if you saw the person.
One word of warning to everyone - my mum was on a short flight recently and she fell asleep. She was woken by something tugging at her foot hard, and realised that her foot was inside the handle of her handbag and someone was trying to pull her bag away. I know she should have stood up and made a fuss but she was quite shaken and actually did nothing at the time.
