I went to this rescue woman's house and was greeted by the most adorable little white kitten you could imagine: a beautiful face, tiny little pink paws, she came right up to me and began nuzzling me, purring like a motorbike, lolling around for a belly rub, she was enchanting.

But then I looked up and locked eyes with a shaggy tabby cat. In her eyes was a look I can only describe as total fear. I asked the woman about the tabby amd was told she'd been rescued off a derelict building site, she had jumped into the car of the woman who was feeding all these strays. I went to go and pet her, M, and she allowed herself to be petred but ran behind the washing machine, trembling. They knew she wasnt born wild, and they thought she had been badly hurt by men, because she was now very nervous around men particularly.

I told my boyfriend I had to make a choice: this heartbreaker white kitten or a tabby cat with MH problems. I just couldn't get her terrified look out of my head and I knew that I would have the patience to help her. I knew I would regret not giving her a home, whereas the white kne would be snapped up.

Now she plays with my boyfriend and even sleeps on him. She also has a "brother" now - but he's a whole different story.

Please share your rescue stories! Attached is a pic of the now healed M 😊

I have to admit black and white cats always strike me as the classiest. Something so polished looking about them!

Hi everyone, I'm loving these stories, wiping away the odd tear at the back stories.. u.do feeling so happy that these kitties were rescued

Our own cat is also a tiny black beauty, her mum was rescued while pregnant with her. The house was appalling, dirty litter trays, inadequate food etc

Now our special girl is spoiled to bits and gets away with far more than my DCGrin

Gottalovesummer · 03/10/2017 19:05

She had been 'helping' while we put the new washing machine in 😂 I did think it was spiders but it was only dust

DH and I have had a few rescues over the years. Currently one cat, acquired as kitten (fluffy b&w) and my inherited dog. Dog was adopted by my Mum and then by me after she died.
Dog v unappealing when adopted, very timid, not friendly, but my Mum wanted her and they eventually bonded. Doggy made my Mum very happy for the 3 years they were together. Now with us and doing very well. She's a very sweet dog and enjoying her twilight years.

Meet teddy.

Owner wasn’t overly well and was getting rid of 2 from 4 dogs. This fella was bullied by the others and so was a bit of a quivering heap.

He’d never been near children or families so we took the 2 year year old son just to be sure.

Now he sleeps on the hall floor outside sons room and the pair are inseparable....! Utterly amazing with other children - patient, docile but instantly attentive if son cries.

And a total focal point when out walking...!

I've always wanted a cat but we always talked ourselves out of getting one... so many reasons not to!
Then, earlier this year we went in to the garden and saw this little stray moggy looking very sorry for herself - flea bitten and skinny with a swollen stomach and she was just staring in to space. She didn't have much energy! DH approached her and she started to run off... I approached her and made friends with her and gave her a tin of tuna. And she never left! She is lives with us now, has transformed in to a beautiful and affectionate cat and was the best decision we ever made Grin

My now 14 year old rescue Cassie who picked me. She stood by me with an abusive ex and made it quite clear she was unimpressed with him even though she was meant to be a joint dog, was my faithful friend and guard dog in a fairly rough house when I did get rid and made it clear she was happy I'd made now DH more than a friend. She now mothers all our cats

splendidisolation - isn't it just? She got there eventually, though. I remember her eagerly sniffing one friend's armpits, much to his amusement. No idea what deodorant he had on but boy, did she like it! Then the first (possibly last) time she sat on another friend's lap (someone she saw regularly) she discovered his lap was "very comfortable"!!!!! He had no idea quite what to do, my mum got very embarrassed and I just fell about laughing!

The funniest one, though, was the guy who came to check the burglar alarm. For whatever reason, from his first visit (though we'd had Ellie for a number of years by this point) she decided he was hers! Very quickly she got him opening the front door for her, regularly (like, every two minutes!). Then it was showing him her belly, and then, when she came in the rarely-opened patio door she totally ignored me and went straight over to him for some loving! No idea why she cottoned on to him so quickly, but she really did love him.

But all this was many, many years after we first got her.

Oh and our rescue hen Harriet who we met in a service station in the North of England having fallen off a lorry. She joined us on a 5 day trip and laid her first egg on the Liverpool boat home to NI

My cat is 10, I got her from the RSPCA as a kitten.

She was extremely aggressive & couldn't be rehomed with children.

After 10 years of cuddles & fuss she's a right softy, sadly she is having scans for possible cancer tomorrow.

Please wish her well as she's helped me through my MH problems & I would be devastated to lose her..

Our rescue boy and girl. We got both of them whilst living abroad. DP found her at the bins. We think the mum was run over and she was the only one left.

Our boy was living with his mum, brothers and sisters at the bottom of someone's garden. When they were eventually caught we got him and he lived down the back of the sofa for two weeks!

Oysterbabe · 03/10/2017 19:44

Very similar to OP. My mum went to choose a dog from a rescue centre and wanted a border collie as full of energy for long walks and running round their small holding. There was 2. One trotted up to the front of the kennel to greet them, tail wagging and with a big grin. The other was bouncing off the walls. He had a cast on his leg as he'd actually caused a small fracture by repeatedly throwing himself at the wall. She took the crazy one as he was obviously so miserable in the kennels. He had a long and happy life looneying around the paddock and rounding up ducks.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/10/2017 19:50

I wasn’t looking for a cat because I live on a busy road and work long shifts. I fell in love with a picture of a black Persian on Facebook that had been shared by a Persian rescue and every reason for not having cats fell apart. They eat dry food and are indoor. So I adopted them both. They were used as breeding queens in what sounds like a kitten farm. They were rescued as part of a group of six, of which their third sister died and another Cat almost died. It took a very long time to gain their confidence but two years on they are just brilliant! Sweet and very affectionate, just not very bright! ( yes there are two different cats in the pictures)

These 2 were both rescued from abusive situations. They adore each other.

Last summer, a little black kitten kept coming up to my door, looking scared and hungry. We looked after her whilst thinking that she must belong to someone. Finally, it transpired that our neighbour moved out and left her behind.

She was gorgeous and she is really scared of umbrellas, which made me think she must have been hit by an umbrella by her ex owners. She was also very nervous initially but we built a bond with her. She would sleep in our garden and be the first to greet us in the mornings and evenings. She was also always there when I had a hard day at work and feeling down.

We promised that we will take her in if she was still homeless by winter. However, she managed to find another neighbour to adopt her! In some ways, I'm happy for her but still miss her dearly. She still occasionally turns up when she falls out with her new owners. :)

Seryph · 03/10/2017 19:59

Of the six cats and four dogs we have ever owned, only one of the dogs was technically a rescue, but the family that bred him clearly didn't give a shit about him, he was terrified of men, shouting and sticks. So I think we can all work out how that happened.

I have two rescue cats with me (DDog is with my parents), one is half feral a mini black and white and the other is at least part MC or NFC. I have had them since they were 12 weeks old, they'll be nine next birthday. They see me as their mum, and they are the softest, most gentle cats I have ever known.

Seryph · 03/10/2017 20:00

Only one of the dogs wasn't a rescue. All the rest were.
