DH has worked for the same employer for 34 years. He's slowly worked his way up to just below management level but can't get any further. Can't go into too much detail as it would be outing but he was personally responsible for the development and running of a huge project which now employs 30+ people to do the job he did on his own for nearly a year.

He went for an interview about five weeks ago for a promotion and yet again didn't get it. Only found out today.

This keeps happening. He's moe than capable of the jobs he is applying for but it seems his face doesn't fit.

I'm so annoyed on his behalf. Just need to rant.

😡😡😡

Longevity shouldn’t get you a management job; being there however many years is irrelevant really. There’s been lots of good advice here

Sorry but someone better got it. He'll find out the scores and why but that's it really. Has happened a lot to me, and that's how it should be. Sorry.

I'm sorry for your DH Flowers

It's very easy to say "work harder", "someone better got it", "he's just not cut out for management" but that doesn't make it any less painful or disheartening. Tell him to hang in there and keep applying for similar jobs in other companies, something will come up!

Sprinklestar, long story short: I didn't! Hiring overachieving, under-confident grads who'd rather drop dead than tell the boss they've failed to deliver is kind of an industry standard in my line of work. It's the worst kept industry secret out there (but we're not quite insane enough to print in in recruitment brochures).

If he gets decent feedback, he can work on it with a proper development plan so that when other opportunities come up he should be supported to go for those.
My friend's husband hired a coach of some sort when he failed to get promotion and he got another chance, think it was to help with the presentation element and 'switching yourself on'. Something like that could make a difference.
As a manager myself, we have identified people in the team that are high fliers and will be promoted on a quicker path than others who are doing a perfectly good job.
