My eyes are too shit to have laser eye surgery?? Aibu to think its bollox? Anyone else had this?

I am pretty badly short sighted (-6 in both eyes) and have decided to have laser eye surgery as I am sick of glasses and contacts

I went for a consultation at Optimax and had all the eye tests etc. The sales consultant I saw after said my eyes were too bad for LASIK/LASEK - which costs about 2 - 3k. However - all isn't lost! - I am a good candidate for a corneal implant (I think its called) where they basically insert a contact lense inside your eye ...however this is FIVE GRAND. Five fucking grand

I about died. I mean I want it done, and I will pay it if absolutely necessary, if its the only option.. has anyone with similar (or even worse) eyes that had it done.... I just cant believe I am "too short sighted" to have my eyes fixed :( gutted

To add insult to injury, I had a £500 off voucher ....surprise surprise, its only valid for the laser surgery not the 5k treatment

Go to Moorfields not a high street outfit for goodness sake. Get a proper opinion.

Get a second opinion but yes, it's totally possible that's true. It's not so much how short sighted you are that complicates it but the shape of your eye (astigmatism, meaning your eye is more rugby-ball shaped).

If it was possible to give you the Lasik they would, since the profit margin is much higher on that. The corneal implant costs you a lot more, but it also costs them a lot more.
If they recommended that then it was not about the money.

I think the cost is realistic but go to the best place possible.

Bollocks. I was -11 in both eyes with an astigmatism. Had surgery- now 20/20. All my similarly blind relatives have been done as well.
The bad news is that it's a lot more expensive than the standard op. £5000 at Moorfields seeing Julian Stevens who's a bit of an expert in complex cases.

Minus six should be a lot easier though..... not sure why the clinic wouldn't see you....

There are a lot of added complications with someone with high myopia (over -4) having anything done to their eyes. There is a greater risk of retinal detachment and so on. I would do some googling first. Personally I am a -10 in both eyes and I wouldn’t want anything medical done to my eyes, I am too worried about the risks.

The paperwork for mine said that different laser options were available for eye sight up to and, sometime beyond, -10/+10, dependent on individual eye type, measurements, etc. I went to a laser eye surgery place locally within our general hospital's eye clinic. I didn't want to go to a high street type branch place. Mine cost approx £2k per eye.

I am -15 with astigmatism. I can’t have lasek either. It’s shit.

I was also told that other surgeries were guaranteed to improve my vision, but they couldn’t guarantee that I’d not need glasses on top. Before even contemplating the £5k double check this. It may be better at your prescription, but double check!!

I had laser surgery done 6 years ago and am back in glasses again. I was a -6 but I can't remember if I had lasek or lasik, had the one where the laser does the work.

Probably wouldn't have wasted my money if I knew it had as high a failure rate as my optician says it does

I had RelEX SMILE treatment. Its similar to LASIK, but a smaller incision.

Moorfields is recommended a lot on here, but as Im no where near London and their locations, it wasn't a possibility for me.

Check out a private specialist. I got offered laser at -6 however advised that would likely be zapped at least twice. I didn't do it as felt intrusive to have to do it more than once and wear glasses in between.

I would get checked out by an eye surgeon in a hospital not on the high street.

I had mine done and they were WAY worse than that! I went to a specialist surgeon on Harley St and it was fab, though definitely not cheap. PM me if you want more info.

Oh and I only had to do it once. They said there was a 10% chance I would need a "touch-up" afterward but it didn't happen, though I wouldn't have been upset if it did.

Out of interest why do you hate contact lenses so much?

My sister was -7 ish in both and she had laser surgery but she still needs glasses for driving etc. I think she's about -1.

I'm -6.5 ish in both and have yet to find the guts or spare cash to get it done.

Contact lenses are contra-indicated regarding prevention of e.g. corneal ulcers.

Go to see Prof. David Gartry- works out of Moorfields and also has a clinic in the west end. But it does cost best part of £10k for lens replacement surgery. I was -7.5 or something and I had the option of laser or lens replacement.

Perhaps try somewhere else for a second opinion. I had lasik, nine years ago, I have to say one of the best things I have ever done, my only regret is not having it done sooner. Life changing for me.

I'm a -4.00 but can't have the usual laser due to my corneas.

My mom's eyesight was really poor (after childhood measles) so she wore hard contact lenses for years. Her eyesight was too bad for just laser treatment, so she went to a London hospital and had new lenses and later, when it was all healed up, she had fine tuning laser treatment on the new lenses. It cost a lot but was worth every penny - it would have been more than 10 years ago now, so perhaps prices have come down?

Incidentally, I had lasik at a high street outfit and the treatment and results were first class.

Sorry a bit off topic but I am kind of 😱😱 at the prescriptions of some of the posters on here. I'm -5.25 and I get comments from optitions about how I am very short sighted, my prescription is really high, and at my latest sight test got told that I can't expect to be able to read the bottom line on the sight test because of my prescription
