Fuck's sake...we are moving into new house today and I've managed to gash my finger on a new knife. I've never cut myself deeply before and have no clue what I'm supposed to do?!

It's probably 1/4 to 1/2 cm deep in the fleshy part of one of my fingers (on the inside if that makes sense?)

I've wiped it with antiseptic and covered in gauze and taped it up but do I need to go to hospital? I don't want to if I don"t have to but have no idea if it will need stitches or something.

Today of all fucking days, we are right in the middle of physically moving, so not registered with a doctor locally.

It's stinging like mad and there's quite a lot of blood Sad. Help me mumsnetters!

I work as a secretary for Hand Trauma and I would absolutely recommend you got to A&E as it may get infected and could cause a real problem. You need to have it properly washed out and steri-stripped/possibly stitched.

If it's very deep I would go - risk of tendon damage, nerve damage that could lead to loss of sensation / use, plus if I remember rightly wounds have to be stitched within a certain amount of time?

I cut myself really badly with a scalpel (I do paper cutting) and it took literally months to heal properly as it kept opening back up when I used my hand. Should have had it stitched at the start but terrified of needles and had a really bad injury with tons of stitches years ago that has left me a bit traumatised! 111 is a good service but it's difficult when they can't physically assess an injury (different if they're asking for symptoms). I'd get a nurse or doctor to look at it, at least.

I wouldn't bother unless the bleeding doesn't stop.

Go to the pharmacist and ask them what to do

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 02/10/2017 16:44

Minor Injuries Unit if necessary, not A&E please...

byt agree call the line and see if you can manage this yourself

TammySwansonTwo · 02/10/2017 18:13

Not everywhere has a separate minor injuries unit and A&E, we don't - obviously if your area does then perfect.
