Not to let the kids use ‘my’ printer?

In an attempt to get more organised, I bought a £20 WiFi printer last week. This means I can print emails from school, scouts etc straight away from the iPad, and deal with them. Game changer.

We still have the old printer in the study, there are three laptops in the house that can be easily USB connected, it obviously just involves leaving their rooms to do it.

Both teenagers have moaned and moaned this week that it’s not fair, they should be able to use the WiFi one. I’ve said no because I’ve signed up for the free instant ink plan which is only for 15 pages a month, if they use more we’ll have to upgrade the plan and use more ink. I’ve done this so I never run out (I really am very disorganised. We still have a huge box of cheapo ink for the old printer.

DD in particular does huge colourful pages for her school work. And today she wanted to print some inspirational quotes for her wall.

Am I being a selfish cow (as DD told me this morning)? They’re not allowed on my iPad either, which is another bone of contention, they both have kindles and a laptop each. And iPhones. Apparently I buy all the good stuff for myself and they get nothing. They’re not generally spoilt arseholes but they are behaving like it.

AIBU?

I would change the wifi code and not share it with anyone who called me a selfish cow! They also would be banned from doing any printing without stumping up for the ink with that attitude. They have no idea how good they have it!

CredulousThickos · 01/10/2017 15:07

Tried to share the link from the amazon app but failed to work out how...

It’s this one but it’s gone up to £34 now. It’s good, does everything I need it to.

Yanbu at all. It's so annoying when they get things of their own yet expect you to share anything that's yours, especially if that's the expectation. I'd be pointing out that I worked for the money that goes to pay for mine and their gadgets and that if they think not sharing the printer is selfish then they ain't seen nothing yet!

As for the printer, we bought an HP Envy from Currys a few months ago for about £40. That also has the endless ink thing too but you get up to 100 pages for I think £8 a time (you're only charged when they actually send you the ink so if you don't need any, they don't send any and you don't have to pay.

TroelsLovesSquinkies · 01/10/2017 15:23

Not a selfish cow and any Dd that called me that would find the wifi code changed, that will teach her to be so gobby to her mother, she's and entitled little madam.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 01/10/2017 15:28

You've just reminded me that I have a wifi printer somewhere in the house!

The things I buy and forget about.

You made the right call about the printer. Stay strong.

TroelsLovesSquinkies · 01/10/2017 15:32

Heres a quote for her wall too.
Love
Life
And respect your parents.

Do you have a PC in your study too?

TheHungryDonkey · 01/10/2017 15:48

I have that printer too. It's a joy. But the ink cost more than the actual printer.

CredulousThickos · 01/10/2017 15:52

There is an old and unused pc in the study.

TheDiamondMumcrafter · 01/10/2017 15:55

I bought the same printer yesterday but it was full price. It’s brilliant for a cheap printer!

rjay123 · 01/10/2017 16:08

Connect printer to pc. ‘Share’ the printer to the network, kids can then print to the study without having to plug in

Hunkle · 01/10/2017 16:11

YANBU at all.

CredulousThickos · 01/10/2017 16:47

Ooh, would that work? Even though neither the ancient pc or printer have WiFi?

OP posts:
00100001 · 01/10/2017 16:52

You would have to keep the PC on for them to be able to print.

CredulousThickos · 01/10/2017 16:53

Ah right. No, that’s pointless. They can just carry on using the printer by plugging in a laptop.

wheresthel1ght · 01/10/2017 16:56

Nit unreasonable but could you get a WiFi dongle to plug into the printer and make it WiFi? They are about £7 in currys if it would be compatible (not an expert)

Nanny0gg · 01/10/2017 16:59

Oh for heaven's sake!

They can get up off their backsides and go and print on the old printer. or go without.

And how old is your DD? The way she spoke to you was outrageous!

drinkswineoutofamug · 01/10/2017 17:00

YANBU
I bought myself an all singing and dancing laptop and a wifi printer for my uni work. I won't give out my laptop password , won't let anyone in the house use either.
I'm also paying for 5o prints a month ( hp) and this is just right for me.
