I love the BVI.
Want to take the DCs early next year.
DH reckons it's a bad idea post hurricane what with the damage
I think it'll be OK, they'll appreciate the business, and overall it will be a positive experience for everyone
Have I lost the plot here?

If they are taking booking, GO, Go, Go

rainbowjoy · 30/09/2017 21:43

They need the tourists to return but early next year not sure I would. What do you want to do whilst you are there? Holiday or help. We went five years ago sailing and absolutely loved it but very sadly most of the places we went to are now totals wrecks, in time they will be rebuilt but it's going to take years I really feel for the islanders and hope to go back one day.

I think early next year is optimistic unless you want to go and help as opposed to holiday.

Thanks for the replies.
Tbh I really want to holiday there. although we know some Tortola locals so would want to help too. Not sure quite what that would entail and the kids are quite young.
Maybe DH is right, it might be too soon. I hate it when he's right about my half-arsed plans.
Talk in Peace I confess, that's what I wanted to hear Grin I thought, hey, it'll be a bit of a mess but still enjoyable and we'll be supporting the local economy.
Probably naive of me.

Early next year is too soon.

Having young kids is going to hamper how much you can help. Not sure i would enjoy a lovely holidag when people around me are so desperate. I would want to help.

If you really want a holiday there, i would wait.

IF and Only IF they are taking bookings for you as a tourist, then go.
You will not get luxury,
but by then the beaches will be clean and most of the roof back on
If you are willing to accept that it will be a bit more third world than it has been for a generation
you will have a fantastic vacation and help their economy

DO NOT go as a "do gooder" tourist. THat is insulting.

I think I see your point.

Although Ta 1kinPeace are probably in a position to help with some logistic management type stuff, which DH is doing already but remotely, through business contacts.I wasn't imagine a barn building scenario ala "Long hot Summer"

A Uni friend of mine lives in Barbados (local, not expat)

He organised that people donated money to the wholesaler who then bought goods at wholesale prices and filled a ship to go to Dominica
(twice as much as if bought at retail)
THAT was useful

Sailing Boats are donating solar panels so people can charge up drills to get buildings repaired before the power comes back on

Arranging lots of landings to cut off villages so they can repair even before the roads open ...

helping to clear tree trunks from roads - but so that the wood can be re used

the islands will recover
but it will take time

if you have small kids, the best thing to do would be to be willing to pay first world prices for access to the beach and enjoy the rustic living conditions

the snorkelling reefs have been pasted by the storms
(and the season has another two months to go)

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 01/10/2017 18:51

Some places are definitely taking bookings, but I guess I'm wondering if they're "ready "
