Does anyone else drive all around the roundabout?

Instead of waiting in a long queue for the left/straight ahead exit?

Most roundabouts I use daily have heavier traffic in the left hand lane, (going to centre, retail parks, general main roads etc) and the right one normally has 2 or 3 cars waiting in comparison.

I generally just go into the right hand lane, then go all the way around and back to the exit I need, as its quicker.
Especially when it is a traffic light controlled one, the lights always let 3 cars through and change back.

A few people with me have thought it was strange, so it got me thinking if it was a driving 'taboo' (or unreasonable...)
Are you supposed to stick to the lane you need?

Yeah no point being a sheep although I do feel a bit like that episode of Mr Bean!

lozzylizzy · 30/09/2017 15:54

My DH just goes in the right hand lane and butts in like a twat though!

DailyMailReadersAreThick · 30/09/2017 15:56

If too many people did it, it would mean everybody had to queue rather than the ones turning a certain way. But as long as it's just one or two then it's a sensible thing to do.

It's game theory in a way - a system can function with a certain amount of "cheaters" but once there are too many, the cheat no longer works.

CasperGutman · 30/09/2017 15:57

I've done what you describe once or twice, but if everyone did this it would make roundabouts much less efficient in terms of the number of cars they could handle in a given period of time. When you drive all the way round, people waiting to enter the roundabout from every road you pass must give way to you (including those in the left lane of the road you started from). It's rather antisocial.

TSSDNCOP · 30/09/2017 15:58

Yes all the time, it's perfectly legit so much less obnoxious than cutting in.

nemno · 30/09/2017 15:59

You're not breaking any rules AFAIKS but you are queue jumping. So it depends if you think that is fine for all queues as I can't see the difference.

BakedBeans47 · 30/09/2017 15:59

So it’s ok for everyone else to queue, but not you?

liquidrevolution · 30/09/2017 16:00

Its fun-er than queuing. I go wheeeee as i go round.

ChelleDawg2020 · 30/09/2017 16:01

I think it's unacceptable and loathe the people who do it. It's not "less obnoxious than cutting in" - do you seriously think nobody notices what you are doing?! It's amazing how some people are able to justify rudeness on the grounds that they could be doing something even worse.

teaandtoast · 30/09/2017 16:01

I tend to think 'twat' if I see this.

caoraich · 30/09/2017 16:01

I sometimes do similar, but I suppose it could be seen as antisocial

At the end of my road there's a junction, on the left about 50m down is a mini roundabout. It's a busy road and a nightmare to turn right, which is towards town.

I always go up the left hand lane of the traffic, turn left and then all the way round the mini roundabout and back up the road. It does sometimes confuse people on the mini rounabout but I just make out like I'm lost Grin

sharklovers · 30/09/2017 16:04

Yes, all the time

FannyWisdom · 30/09/2017 16:05

Yup or I'd go postal.
To get home I have three trouble roundabouts.
All three lead to bloody retail parks and also have merge in turn lanes.

NONE of the merge in turn lanes are ever used for waiting in, it's considered pushing in and people react stubbornly or even aggressively.

I now give zero fucks and use all the roundabout and merges to skip the twats.

Timeywimey8 · 30/09/2017 16:05

Yes I have done that but it won't make you any friends.

I was once told that it was illegal in New Zealand (or that going all the way round the roundabout to go back in the same direction was) - is that true?

But in terms of cheek, I find the people who go along the right hand lane but are actually going straight on and push in right away are way cheekier than those who go round the roundabout.

Although I had an example of cheek this morning that took my breath away. I was in a queue at traffic lights, single lane, no dual carriageway. When the lights changed, a red car tore down the outside (so on the wrong side of the road, fortunately nothing coming the other way) and pushed in further down! And someone actually let them in! I have seen cheekiness on the roads but that really took the biscuit!

PuppyMonkey · 30/09/2017 16:05

Bit odd to do it all the time imho, but it's not something I could get really worked up about. Let's hope you don't end up getting caught up in some sort of massive snarl up at another part of the roundabout you can't see from your point of entry as you're making your smug way round. Wink

MagdalenLaundry · 30/09/2017 16:07

It's not illegal but it is twattish
What makes you so special that you should not have to wait like everyone else

SerfTerf · 30/09/2017 16:07

Only when I'm lost and don't realise what lane I need until it's too late.

Timeywimey8 · 30/09/2017 16:08

This is not anti-social and you don't have to make out you are lost, it is totally sensible. Where I live there's a petrol station next to a roundabout. There is a sign saying no right turns, because all you have to do is turn left and go round the roundabout. But people still turn right. I sometimes wonder if people simply can't picture their route if it doesn't go straight. I simply wouldn't have the patience to wait to turn right. There are a few places in my town where I would ban right hand turns.

But we have a junction outside town where right hand turns are officially banned, there are kerbs on the road to funnel you left towards a roundabout and people still turn right!

ilovesushi · 30/09/2017 16:10

I go all around a smallish round about near DCs' dance school as taking a right out of the studio carpark is like dicing with death - zero visibility from parked cars in the street and heavy traffic. I do a left then loop right around the roundabout at the bottom of the street. I feel a bit weird doing it but I do super precise signalling to try and make up for my terrible faux pas. Is this wrong? (blush)

afishnotabird · 30/09/2017 16:11

I do it all the time, but never on purpose, just easily lost Blush

dobbyclub · 30/09/2017 16:12

It's queue jumping. Other people don't do it because queue-jumping is generally frowned upon - what would you do if everyone else started doing it? I do understand though as I queue patiently at several ridiculous roundabouts, and it's better than queueing in the right-hand lane then trying to go left, which loads more people do.

Grin Love that!

I do it all the time, I don't go wheeeee though, but I will next time.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 30/09/2017 16:20

It's queue jumping, selfish & twattish. Just wait your turn like everyone else instead of thinking it's clever to push in.

Using a near by roundabout to change your direction is totally different & often the safest & most sensible option. Just proceed with care if it's not common as people will expect you to turn off before getting to them & might not be paying adequate attention & hit you. No need to pretend you're lost though 🤣

megletthesecond · 30/09/2017 16:25

liquid and afish I go wheeee on roundabouts when I'm lost too. Which is quite often for some who has a sat nav Blush.
