To watch my weight whilst pregnant?

Mammyloveswine · 30/09/2017 10:41

So I joined slimming world in October last year, lost almost a stone and a half and got to target. Found out I was pregnant around the same time. I've been following the plan (ie eating pretty healthily) but still having the odd treat. I'm now 27 weeks pregnant and have gained a stone so far, am happy with this.

I am fed up with people commenting though! "oh you need to eat more you're pregnant", "how ridiculous going to slimming world", "you snapped back after your first!".

I didnt "snap back", I just didn't overindulge in that pregnancy either!

I know that sw is approved by the RCM and caters for pregnant members brilliantly so why is it such an issue to others that I'm not piling on excess weigh?

YANBU.

When you say following the plan do you mean you have your midwifes support and are having the extra a and b choices that you need? If yes then that is fine.

ememem84 · 30/09/2017 10:45

I had the same. I put on 15kg during pregnancy. I ate healthy and kept myself active. People commented that I should be eating more eating for 2 etc. And that baby would be underweight etc.

Ds arrived last Sunday he was 7lb1. He's absolutely fine.

People just like to comment. Seems as though once you announce a pregnancy you become public property.

drfostersbra · 30/09/2017 10:49

YANBU it takes such a lot of effort to lose the weight after the preg if you have 'eaten for two' babies take what they need from us and always get the best of whatever we put into our bodies so don't listen to these feeders who probably want to fatten you up because they're jealous.

FenceSitter01 · 30/09/2017 10:49

Tell people to go do one. Pregnancy isn't an excuse to eat like a famine is about to be visited upon your house. Those who do use it as an excuse to trough the hagen daz for 9 months are generally the ones who end up three sizes bigger a year post partum with very poor self esteem and an obsessive jealousy about their partners talking to other women.

Mammyloveswine · 30/09/2017 10:56

Yes am following the plan properly with extra a and b choices and my midwife was very happy for me to continue, she went herself during both her pregnancies!

I will also have my extras when breastfeeding as I did with my first baby.

I just think it's actually really rude! It is also usually those who put on lots of weight who comment-one person put 6 stone on and 8 years later still hasn't lost it!

MumsOnCrack · 30/09/2017 11:01

When I was pregnant the Dr told me I needed another hundred calories a day towards the end - not much at all. I didn't even weigh myself I just went by clothing sizes and how I felt. It is rude!

MumsOnCrack · 30/09/2017 11:03

I actually think you're very sensible. I couldn't imagine having a new baby, and all that comes with that, AND having to lose six stone...!

coddiwomple · 30/09/2017 11:05

I think it's even more important to watch your diet when you are pregnant! Of course be sensible, eat enough and of everything, but there's absolutely no benefit for the baby to put on more than 2 stones (and I am generous).

Calculate weight of baby at birth + placenta, and the result is not 4 or 5 stones, even if you are generous if your body taking some reserves.

Fidoandacupoftea · 30/09/2017 11:06

Of course you have a baby, but nothing wrong with watching your weight

LoniceraJaponica · 30/09/2017 11:08

I agree with Fence.

Eating for two is a myth. I think you only need about 200 more calories a day, but I am happy to be corrected

Runningpear · 30/09/2017 11:08

I do slimming world and you can eat a good, filling and nutritious diet. If both yourself & midwife are happy then crack on.
I tried to not put on too much when I was pregnant. Worked well until about 26 weeks and my appetite massively ramped up. i put 2 st on each time. Lost again afterwards with SlimmingWorld.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 30/09/2017 11:10

YANBU. It's a sensible plan that takes into account your nutritional needs. If it was something like slim fast or the cabbage soup diet, that would be different.

I had a lot of comment in DS1's pregnancy, first because I was too nauseous with a very sensitive gag reaction to be able to eat much. I did lose weight (and was a healthy weight to start with) while visibly gaining bump. In the second half, because I'd been to exhausted to move much, then because I was getting SPD, the weight piled on, but mostly baby and fluid. I gained 50% of my bodyweight in 5 months, but out of that 4.5 stones, 1.5 was actual "me" weight to lose afterwards. It would have been great if I could have kept moving and retained my regular eating habits but my body just wasn't up for that. For part of the third trimester, one of my few joys was cafe crawls with cake and hot chocolate- until I became near house bound.

It was frustrating getting comments if I was having something like a bag of crisps because I wanted the salt after waking with agonising leg cramps in the night.

Overall, I started the pregnancy being healthy, produced a healthy, substantial baby, and managed the excess sensibly in the following year and returned to my usual sensible habits when my body cooperated again.

TakeMe2Insanity · 30/09/2017 11:11

When I was pregnant I was told that 'eating for two' was a thing of the past the extra you needed was the equivalent to a cheese sandwich in the third trimester ie not much more. You are doing great. 7lb is a good weight for a baby.

Cagliostro · 30/09/2017 11:30

Nothing wrong with it. IME the midwives aren't that bothered - I was referred to consultants due to high BMI but even then they've not weighed me since 12 weeks. I've actually lost weight since, not trying but I just can't eat as much and felt super sick until 16 weeks anyway.

Now low carving due to GD diagnosis and struggling to eat usual calorie requirements let alone the extra 100 or whatever calories recommended in the third trimester. They still aren't bothered though, just checking on the baby's growth

I put on loads with the other two babies and I'm glad not to this time

Percephone · 30/09/2017 23:58

So do you just have two healthy extra A and B instead of one on slimming world? My weight is going up exponentially and I'm getting worried! 😣

Aquamarine1029 · 01/10/2017 00:35

Of course you should still watch your weight and intake. Eating for two is a load of rubbish, and a pregnant woman needs no more than 300 extra calories a day for a healthy pregnancy. Far too many women allow themselves to get bigger than a house whilst pregnant, and then they're left with the aftermath once the baby arrives, and it is so much harder to take it off than to put it on.

DeadDoorpost · 01/10/2017 00:42

I've been watching my weight as well but not because of diet.. I lost 2.5 stone in 6 weeks due to dehydration and Hyperemesis that I have kept an eye on my weight just to make sure I'm still not losing any. Not that it's helped coz no matter what I've still lost some and I'm eating what i should be. I have managed to gain most of the weight back so far but I'm still under my pre pregnancy weight by a stone. Midwife is totally ok with it all though as I'm health and baby is healthy.
So if your MW is ok and has given you the all clear then that's good! Ignore all the comments you get as they do get more frequent as you go on... I've got 7 weeks to go and I honestly can't wait for them to stop.

Hedgehog80 · 01/10/2017 00:45

I have put on 4 stone each time. From 9 stone and size 8-10 to 13 stone and really really big (I have a small frame naturally) got a terrible bad back each time too.
The weight gain was all after 20 weeks too as had HG I think I have some kind of metabolism issue when pregnant as usually I eat whatever I like and never put weight on butbas soon as pg and the HG subsides I stick to my usual diet and the weight piles on it's really odd. Each time it's been gone three months after birth too so something's going on !
YANBU to do sw if it works for you

DrMollyWarmflash · 01/10/2017 14:38

YANBU. I was overweight before I became pregnant, had started SW and lost 1.5 stone before discovering I was pregnant. I struggled with tiredness in my first trimester and ate a lot, and have put on everything I'd lost. I'm already noticing that, at 18 weeks, I am out of breath when I walk. I have continued with SW because I'm determined not to put on an enormous amount of weight because I know how difficult it will be to lose afterwards. Additionally, my mother gained weight over four pregnancies and never lost it, so I constantly have that in the back of my mind! SW is endorsed by midwives and there's such an enormous focus on fruit and vegetables. I say if you're happy, ignore any negative comments and crack on. :)

expatmigrant · 01/10/2017 15:03

Definitely keep watching your weight. Like a PP mentioned, the eating for 2 myth has gone. I only ever put on 2 stone and was back to my normal weight within a few weeks. Just think of that fit , slim mummy you will be soon with the energy needed to play and run around with a toddler.
