How to humanly get rid of spiders

Mumtonoah5 · 29/09/2017 20:56

Firstly I am petrified of the things, if someone offered me a million pound right now to hold a tarantula I would turn them down.

There is a massive spider in our living room which means I can’t go in there as I am terrified! Anyone got any ideas how I can humanly remove it without getting too close?

Glass over the top of spider, sheet of paper under the glass. Lift and release outside.

BulletFox · 29/09/2017 20:58

Could you grab a neighbour to do it? Failing that, get a container, take deep breaths & entrap the beast?

sleepyhead · 29/09/2017 20:59

Sock or tight over the end of Hoover nozzle, turn it on (low!) to pick up the spider and the turn it off over a container that you can empty out the window.

Spider catcher!
We have one like this

meganorks · 29/09/2017 21:01

I have a spider catcher. It works pretty well unless they are in a corner/on an edge. Its basically a little plastic box with a bit to slide under on a stick. But as i am guessing you don't it really is glass and a bit of card underneith. Because what is worse than catching a spider like that is not catching the spider, losing sight of it, and then having no idea where it is!

meganorks · 29/09/2017 21:04

Thats the one Zebra! But don't click the link if you don't like pics of spiders!!

Mumtonoah5 · 29/09/2017 21:05

TheSpottedZebra I didn’t know these existed, going to order one!

Sleepyhead I am going to try that, wish me luck!

Herotherhalf I just couldn’t..far to close!

Bulletfox Husband out for the night and we live in the country!

Right off to get the hoover!

Kitchen roll or tissue in your hand, scrunched up, gently lower over the spider, apply a small amount of pressure, pick.it up and lob the whole thing out of the window.

Or just pick it up, they're not in any way vicious.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 29/09/2017 21:09

You will hurt it with the Hoover. The suction will be quite hard on a delicate creature.

Mumtonoah5 · 29/09/2017 21:13

I couldn’t do it! No tv for me tonight Sad

Is there no way you can learn to like spiders?

They are quite incredible creatures and by and large completely harmless.

Nice to have in your house really, they kill and catch things that will actually cause you bother, I have seen many a house spider take a wasp down.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 29/09/2017 21:14

If you really can't, just walk near it, it will piss off pretty quickly.

Pastacube · 29/09/2017 21:14

glass on top does work. also i can link a nice pic if you want that proves how nice they are as they have fluffly paws close up like a cat.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 29/09/2017 21:16

Or nudge its leg with your finger.

I do understand phobias, I used to be petrified of wasps, but I taught myself to sit still when they came around, and I can now quite happily dispose of one.

Mumtonoah5 · 29/09/2017 21:20

Haha pastacube I will politely decline your offer! Smile

OP, I used to be like you but as HairyHands said, spiders are useful and interesting. It sounds silly but I started saying 'Hello Spider' every time I saw one. Now I am quite glad to see them and had to carefully help a mummy garden spider out of the kitchen into the garden. It can be done. Besides, the spider in your living room might share your taste in tv Wink.

expatmigrant · 29/09/2017 21:27

I do the glass and a bit of card trick. I don't mind them but my DC are quite pathetic

Mumtonoah5 · 29/09/2017 21:30

ISaySteadyOn Thanks for the advice, I shall try it. I think I’ll call the living room invader Gary!

TheSpottedZebra · 29/09/2017 21:43

I also do the glass and a card thing. But I have a special plastic glass so that I can chick the whole thing out of the window should I need to. And I have a shiny bit of card (a flyer that came through the door) which is very slippy and flat so very fit for purpose.

Mine are for hornets though, but I like to be ready.

RavingRoo · 29/09/2017 21:44

Stomp on them really quickly so they feel nothing? Halo

LyannaStarktheWolfMaid · 29/09/2017 21:45

Glass over spider. Paper under glass. Turn over carefully. Tip out outside. Foolproof.

bluebump · 29/09/2017 21:51

I've got one of the second spider catchers linked above, it's brilliant. I'm using it loads at the moment!

HerOtherHalf · 30/09/2017 21:22

You missed the final step Lyanna - run like the fecking wind!
