To think DD is being a bit snobby to say pet food from cheap shop isn't good enough for the hamster!?

DD is 16 and rather obsessed over this hamster. All her money goes on it. It really does live a ridiculously good life.

Anyway, DD asked if I could pick up some food for it today - she gave me the money.

I thought to be nice, I'd pay for it and got her the hamster and mouse food from B&M. Oh she wasn't happy when I got home, declaring he can only have blooming Harry Hamster food or god knows what it was. It's £2 more expensive!! I said I wasn't paying that, but she didn't even say thank you for buying the food, just oh that's why I gave you the money.

WIBU???

My children are not hamsters.

EastMidsMummy · 29/09/2017 17:28

And there is nothing wrong at all with frozen food.

TurquoiseChevrotain · 29/09/2017 17:31

There's nothing wrong with giving your kid frozen chips and nuggets each night? Okay.

Yes, obviously your children are not hamsters, so are you saying animals are not important?

FeelingAggrieved · 29/09/2017 17:35

YABU she gave you the money.

BouncyFlouncy · 29/09/2017 17:37

I don't have a hamster, but have rats. I have done extensive research (like many others in the fancy) and will only feed my rats a mix that i mix myself using specific ingredients. No way would I feed them a ready mix let alone b&m/wilkos etc. I take in rescue rats, some of which may have been fed cheap stuff or other non suitable crap, after a few weeks on my food (not exclusive, many others make similar mixes) you can really see the difference in the animal.

So no, not snobby to want to treat your pet to the best life it can live and you were rude to just disregard your daughters wishes whether she's 16 or 36. Take her money and buy her what she asks for or at least concede with good grace that what you bought is not suitable. If it's unopened you can take it back anyway.

SixtyFive65 · 29/09/2017 17:58

Hmm bit silly to be so precious over it's good imo. It really does look similar. As long as it's fed watered etc. I don't get the problem. I was being nice!!

It looks similar!! Most pet foods look similar, that means nothing. Is it the same ingredients? Does it have additives? You don't sound like you are taking much onboard from what various posters who have done research have told you. So you're are definitely being unreasonable!

You can eat it if you think it's so good. It's only cereals.. Have it for breakfast so you don't waste your £5.

Eifla · 29/09/2017 18:17

Good on your daughter! So refreshing to see someone who actually takes small pet care seriously.

B&M hamster food looks like floor sweepings and nothing like Harry Hamster. I’d put it straight in the bin.

Except that lots of people here have agreed with your daughter. So saying it's silly and precious is rather mean to your daughter.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/09/2017 18:22

YABVU and ignoring everything posters are telling you.

If you weren't going to accept being told you're being unreasonable, why did you post?

IncyWincyGrownUp · 29/09/2017 18:37

You weren't being nice. You were illustrating to your child that you think she is wrong, precious, and that you know best.

That's quite spiteful really.

She gave you the money. She specified she wanted the same food as usual. You decided you knew better. You don't. You should go get the right food and apologise.

KindleBueno · 29/09/2017 18:48

I hate how people crap owners dismiss giving a pet more than the cheapest, most basic care as being "obsessed".

crazycatgal · 29/09/2017 19:48

@SixtyFive65 You've said it's fine as long as it's fed and watered. So is it ok for a human to live off frozen chicken nuggets and chips instead of a healthy diet?

WheresMyTaco · 29/09/2017 19:53

3.would you rather her spend money on a hamster than alcohol or drugs

Actually hamsters are a known gateway drug themselves.

YouCantArgueWithStupid · 29/09/2017 19:55

Wait until she has kids and they're having freezer tapas for dinner and remind her of how precious she was over hamster food Wink

paxillin · 29/09/2017 19:55

If Hammy has to be fed on nectar and ambrosia, your DD needs to ensure she always have enough I'd say.

NorksAreMessy · 29/09/2017 19:58

What is the deal with all the hamster threads lately.
Have we been invaded by HAMSTERLUVVAS.com?
Has anyone mentioned Freddie Starr?

LadyDeadpool · 29/09/2017 20:15

Glad your daughter is responsible for feeding the hamster and not you tbh! Some small animal foods can cause higher instances of cancer, or contain too much protein that can be harmful to them.

She's looking after her pet, she is a good responsible pet owner and you should be proud so many people treat small animals as disposable and she is doing amazingly.

Puppymouse · 29/09/2017 20:22

If DH did this for my dog or horse he'd be taking the food back. There's a reason cheap pet food is cheap.

PNGirl · 29/09/2017 20:26

YABU. I would never feed my rats the shite they sell in Wilko or the Pets at Home nuggets they sell. They get a mix of a particular brand plus muesli from a specific shop.

TellMeItsNotTrue · 29/09/2017 21:01

Norks I don't know but all the threads past few days have made me miss having hamsters, need to get a new one

khajiit13 · 29/09/2017 21:05

How can you not see the difference? Shops sells chips and pizza, that doesn't mean they're good for you!? Pet food is the same. Her pet is clearly dear to her and I think it's lovely she is so informed. In this case I think you can learn from your daughter and you should be proud.

titchy · 29/09/2017 21:08

MynewnameisKy · 29/09/2017 21:13

Tellme we tend to mostly use Carefresh which is expensive in comparison to the pine wood shavings type the vet sells. Apparently the Pine aroma is bad for their lungs.

Iloveanimals · 29/09/2017 21:29

Yabvu it's lovely when people really look after their pets. I have seven and yes they do have good quality food. She is being responsible. She gave you money to get what she wanted. You ignored her wishes, which is not OK. It's like if you gave someone money for something you wanted and they came back with something different and cheaper. You'd be complaining. You did wrong even though you thought you were doing right.
