DS going to uni open day there tomorrow, his heart is set on it... we're spending tonight there to get a feel of student life and just googling what there is it seems very little?
Looks like a lovely place but given the field he's going into is musical and theatrical there doesn't seem to be an awful lot going on.
I presume the university itself has lots but he's already talking about going to and playing in gigs each weekend in nearby cities.

Anyway, anyone live there, anything going on tonight, gigs, a show?

Festival Theatre often has quality pre West End shows.

I live in Chichester and I love it. Can't say there's much in the way of a gig scene, though - although there's the festival theatre which is outstanding in terms of, well, theatre.

That said, Portsmouth in one direction and Brighton in the other are both easily reachable.

thanks.

Ellie, what do you recommend two 30 somethings and an 18 year old do tonight?!

Well the theatre is pretty good and it is a lovely city. Decent train links to Portsmouth etc which is likely to be more of a gig scene.Lots of choral and musical things also happen in Arundel but more on the classical side.

EllieMArroway · 29/09/2017 10:49

Well, if you like Alan Ayckbourn you could get some tickets for tonight at CFT (tickets still available) and maybe eat at The Crab & Lobster....fab restaurant at Sidlesham.

There are some brilliant museums & art galleries in Chi, but they'll probably be closed this evening, but you could check.

Chi is a lovely place to be...but it's relentlessly middle class and is not really a Mecca for students in the evenings. My son (21) and his mates all head elsewhere for evenings out as I imagine all the students do.

I will say, though, that music & theatre at Chichester Uni has a fantastic reputation...one of the best in the country, so I understand. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I went to uni there and loved it! It's a very small uni but that makes it fun as everyone knows each other. There's pubs and restaurants in Chichester as well as the SU which does lots of big nights out. On Thursday nights everyone goes out in Bognor. If he's that desperate for something to do then Portsmouth isn't far :) I loved it though and am so glad I went there!

Laska5772 · 29/09/2017 13:48

Brighton is not far on train also for nights out .. plenty of gigs going on there

Stoptherideiwannagetoff · 29/09/2017 16:22

Pop into central Chichester and have a wander round all the bars and restaurants- you could pop to Chichester gate afterwards for cinema- just a few minutes walk from the station, it would give you a good feel of the place - enjoy!

splendidisolation · 29/09/2017 16:37

Chichester for a student....no. No way.

maggiecate · 29/09/2017 16:56

Chichester Theatre has an international reputation - if that's the field he wants to go into he'll be able to see more quality productions there than most other places in the UK, because a lot of shows have a run there before transferring to London. Ian McKellen's in King Lear there at the moment! If it was any other course I might be a bit 'meh' but for theatre it's a good place to go. On the main road along the south coast, decent rail links - and it sounds as if he's done his research if he knows what gigs are on nearby!

Morestrawberriesplease · 29/09/2017 17:35

It's dead! Everything shuts at 5.30pm and it's VERY Tory and conservative. He has been warned! Seriously- go to Brighton or Sussex or somewhere in London... I know people who rave about the festival theatre but they are older, white and middle class and the shows on there reflect that demographic. I've seen more cutting edge things at high school productions in Worthing/Shoreham/ Brighton.

Morestrawberriesplease · 29/09/2017 17:37

And as for people who say oh pop to Brighton - the train service is APPALLiNG and the return trains leave too early for him to even stay for a late film in Brighton never mind gigs or anything else. I work in Chichester every day so know what I'm on about...

RedHelenB · 29/09/2017 17:41

My brother went there to do music and performing arts. It was very quiet and sleepy compared to Sheffield where I studied!

Albatross26 · 29/09/2017 17:44

Did my degree and MA there, loved it. It is quieter than some places but that was what I wanted. There are plenty of bars and opportunities for nights out, plus the theatre is pretty prestigious. The uni is very good for music and musical theatre, I know a few of the tutors and they're excellent!

operaha · 30/09/2017 14:42

Well, he's absolutely sold on it, the musical theatre course is his dream! Nice city, very quiet but my boy knows what he wants! I'll be very proud to see him go.

Great news OP! Hope he has a fab time Smile

Crispsheets · 01/10/2017 17:37

My dd is there. Loves it.

operaha · 02/10/2017 10:54

Crisp - is your dd doing anything musical? The audition process is scary, only 300 of the 1200 that apply get in!!!

If the students that live near me are anything to go by, then there must be enough in town to keep them occupied until 2am on a Sunday morning.

Twitchingdog · 02/10/2017 11:48

Traffic is terrible.
