Dd wants a pocket money loan

Dd is 10. Came home from after school club wanting to buy a beyblade type thing that two other children had brought in. She has last weeks pocket money saved, with her money this Saturday and next Saturday she will have enough. She doesn't want to wait and wants to be loaned her pocket money in advance so she can have it now. I think it's important for her to understand you can't always have what you want the minute you want it and would rather she waited.

We do sometimes match pocket money saved with our money for things she wants and we often buy small toys, games etc not from pocket money.

AIBU to make her wait?

Don't do it!

it doesn't sound like it will be unavailable next week when she's saved up. She just wants it now. A week really isn't very long to wait for a 10 year old, and there's no reason she needs it now, let her wait and save up.

I used to get pocket money advances as a child, I believe it contributed (among other things of course) to me being terrible with money as an adult.

This might be a good time to teach her how loans work. She can have two pay packets, but has to work three to pay back the loan? Or wait and only use two.

Don't do it. Kids need to learn that instant gratification isn't how the real world works.

I make the kids do specific jobs to "earn" any extra. My favourite is cleaning the windows on the inside. They are not very good but it is a labour intensive task and they earn the pennies!

That way they learn that they have to do extra to earn extra.

Dd2 now has given me a list of jobs she will do and the going rate - she drives a hard bargain but I guess is also improving her negotiating skills!

FanSpamTastic This is off topic, but I just thought you were me because of username, and couldn't remember writing that comment! Or having a DD2. Definitely need new glasses.

OP, I don't think you should do it either, or alternatively use a loan concept as Tacos suggests.

Thanks for all the replies, am also worried it will lead to a life of credit cards and overdrafts Confused. Might offer her the chance to earn it though- inside of our windows are looking pretty grimy....
