when is spider season over?

I'm talking about the big, male house spiders we get indoors in the UK. I've just had another whooper after a few others this week. It's been the same since the last week in August.

I remember last year having loads early September but not late September.

When can I relax? And does anyone have any tips to stop them coming in or is that a stupid question. I've tried lemon spray, peppermint spray, conkers and those electrical wave zappers but they've not worked.

It's awful but the house spiders are already indoors- you can't stop them coming in because they are already in :(

I know how you feel- I can't relax either at this time of year. Wanker hairy fuckersAngry

Fekko · 28/09/2017 19:49

There's a season?

thewooster · 28/09/2017 19:53

Yeah there's definitely a season Fekko and it's late summer from August to September but I'm still getting them every night. It's like bumper season this year.

Please don't tell me they live all year round in my house Guns, I must have hundreds of them then!

I know it's awful I only realised this recently, I have had conkers/ spider spray etc all over the house thinking it would keep the bastards out but was then informed that house spiders can't actually survive outside so are already breeding throughout the year in our homes ;(

They just come out more so now because they need to mate before they die (try to feel sorry for them but hell I can't)

It sounds bonkers but as l

GunslingerPie · 28/09/2017 19:58

Sorry posted too soon cos of kicking toddler... as long as I can't see them I don't care if they hide away in my clutter.

dementedma · 28/09/2017 19:59

Should be over soon, hopefully. Havent seen one for a couple of days now.

permatiredmum · 28/09/2017 19:59

Poor things! They are not bastards, they are small, scared and fragile creatures

Hulababy · 28/09/2017 20:00

Loads here too. Causing huge amounts of anxiety as they are huge and on the ceiling or stairs on the top floor every other night or so it seems.
Bought that spray and used it first time tonight - but it does work immediately and now it's gone.

ocelot41 · 28/09/2017 20:00

I recommend a house cat. Mine hints and eats 'em. Problem solved

Pickleypickles · 28/09/2017 20:04

We had 6 in one night the other day.
6!!!!

LovelyPrep · 28/09/2017 20:10

We havent had any! (Probably jinxed myself now) normally we get massive ones and I'm absolutely terrified.
The only thing that's different is that we've thoroughly Indorex'd the house twice this year due to fleas and it seems to have kept everything at bay. Only problem now is we have more flies than I've noticed before because there's no fat git spiders to eat them.

pigsDOfly · 28/09/2017 20:14

Not just spider but daddy longlegs have been driving me nuts, huge ones. They come in their thousands (slight exaggeration) every evening - it doesn't help that the dog likes to sit at the wide open back door - and then they flit around at head height banging into me.

I've become very adept at catching them mid flight and sending them back outside, where they get stuck on all the spider webs in the garden; seem a pointless sort of existence.

thewooster · 28/09/2017 20:33

Thanks Outtogetyou, I'm off down to Lakeland tomorrow to get that spray!

BillBrysonsBeard · 28/09/2017 20:34

I'm sure it's just September that the big ones come out.. I don't mind them but I do wonder how they get in, although if it's true that they have always been inside then little ones sneek in much easier! But then where do they live in the house!? I have access to all my house and there are no big webs anywhere!

SemolinaSilkpaws · 28/09/2017 20:38

I had a huge one arrive on the bed a couple of nights ago. Haven't moved so quick for years.

Silvertap · 28/09/2017 20:42

I bought some Indorex spray after reading about it on here and I've definitely noticed less.

It does work as I saw a big hairy beast scuttle under the sofa. I emptied half a can of indirect after it and when dh came home 8 hrs later the bugger was dead.

OutToGetYou · 28/09/2017 21:22

I can't bear them, I live on my own and am hopeless at dealing with them.

I bought the spray (you can get it on Amazon in fact) but not really been sure what to do with it, but there's always the option of hitting the sods with the can!

Funnily enough though, I am fine with daddy long legs, I can pick those up and put them out of the window etc. But spiders......I can't even do the glass over/card under - once the glass is over I am too scared to go near the glass again. And then I want to throw the glass away.

User7o873 · 28/09/2017 21:35

I had a whopper tonight. I got the spider spray but then couldn't bear to spray it because I knew it would do that terrifying, scurrying run. It escaped. I'm counting the days until spider season is over. Seem to remember it got better in October last year.
Does anyone know if hypnotherapy works? It's honestly starting to ruin my life slightly. I'm constantly looking for them, scanning walls and skirting boards, and preparing for one running out whenever I pick something up. Bleugh.

Dixiestampsagain · 29/09/2017 03:00

Look up the 'Spider Courage Experience' on Facebook. I did a four hour course with them which was a mix of hypnotherapy, cbt and other methods. It was excellent and I manag d a 'capture and release' of a house spider and holding a tarantula by the end!

KangaMummy · 29/09/2017 03:19

CONKERS PLACED BY WINDOWS AND DOORS WILL STOP THEM COMING IN

KangaMummy · 29/09/2017 03:19

Sorry didn't mean to caps lock

RosyPony · 29/09/2017 03:21

Just ignore them, they aren't doing any harm, they're not going to hurt you, they're just spiders.

KangaMummy · 29/09/2017 03:23

Sorry didn't mean to caps lock Blush

Sorry didn't read thread properly to see you have already done CONKERS Blush

I love spiders cos they catch flies (which I hate)

Incitatus · 29/09/2017 04:14

I rescued a house spider the other day as the cat was after it. I put it into a plastic container (without the lid) and it’s moved in Hmm

I tried to shake it out of the container, but it’s built a web and it hung on and wouldn’t leave.

I caught an insect for it from the garden which it readily ate and it’s now living inside a very small terracotta plant pot which I placed inside the box.

Confused
