Argh. WWYD? Potential job dilemma.

Sorry this is so long - it's more of a WWYD than an AIBU. I hope that I've made everything fairly clear in this post. If not, I'm more than happy to explain anything further that I haven't made very clear.

I had a job interview yesterday for a full-time role for Company X. It's to do with tuition, but I'd prefer not to go into any more detail if that's okay, as it may be a bit outing.

During the interview, we got onto discussing working hours. Although the working hours for the role are fairly flexible, the interviewer explained that I would need to be available for at least a couple of evenings a week for commitments linked to the role. I was already aware of this, and am fully willing to fulfil the evening commitments.

Further on in the interview, the interview asked about some of the work listed on my CV, as I wrote on my CV that I am currently doing part-time evening freelance work in the same line of work as the work I'd be doing with Company X. This part-time work is my only source of income at the moment, so it's pretty important.

The interviewer asked which companies I'm working for. I told them, as I thought that it was better to be honest and upfront than to lie or hide the truth.

The companies that I'm working for are basically Company X's rivals, so the interviewer said that I'd need to stop working for the other companies if I get a job with Company X. This is absolutely fair enough.

The only problem is that, if I got the job with Company X, I would be letting down quite a few clients if I stop working for the other comapnies, and I feel really bad.

WWYD?

Sil wants to leave a cabin case of excess luggage at ours when they move to Canada. For mil to take back next year, so in nearly 9 months. We are in a tiny london flat with a ds and have nowhere to put the case away. It would drive me bananas. Would it be unreasonable of me to say no? (And suggest they mail it, which could cost up to £100 I guess )

Ilovecoleslaw · 28/09/2017 15:24

Eh? Hmm
Either take the job or stay where you are?
No one else can make that decision for you.
Seems pretty clear cut to me. Not sure why you wouldn't take the job, assuming it's more hours/pay/a better offer than what you have already

museumum · 28/09/2017 15:24

If you want an employee role rather than being a freelancer then you need to just have a reasonable notice period and make that clear to everybody. I don't know what's reasonable in your field? A month? or a half term? or a whole term?
Either way, tell company x that's the notice you need to stop the freelance work and that you can overlap if they don't mind or they can wait for you.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 28/09/2017 15:25

I would agree that at a certain point (eg after exams have taken place) you'll give up the other job but that you won't let people down.

Ilovecoleslaw · 28/09/2017 15:26

timeisnotaline you need to create your own thread

timeisnotaline · 28/09/2017 15:27

Oops I thought I was doing that! Sorry! Blush

timeisnotaline · 28/09/2017 15:28

I agree with the notice period bit by the way :)

I would tell company X that you need two weeks to wind down your current freelance commitments and take the job. See if you can help them find someone else to hand the projects off to, and if you can't, tidy them up as best you can.

Your freelance clients did not make a long term commitment to you and the reverse is true as well. These things happen and if you have done good work for them and try to make the transition as smooth as possible it shouldn't be a problem.

Just drop the excess baggage to someone else ... applies to both i

Can't you take upurclyshts with you?

Pariswhenitdrizzles · 28/09/2017 16:55

Ttbb I can't take the clients with me unfortunately as it's not allowed in the contract I have with the agencies I'm working with.
