To apply for this job?

Sorry, probably the most boring AIBU ever but posting for traffic.

I have seen a job in my field come up (quite rare they do). I love my current job and the people I work with but I think it's time to move on (long story).

I have everything this new job needs in the JD apart from management experience. I have never been a manager, ever. I suppose I've had to manage things but that's it! Unlikely I will get it, so is it even worth applying for?

Please feel free to share any positive stories you've got where you don't quite fit the JD but get at least an interview!

Go for it! What's the worst that can happen? & the best-you might get it!

NeonFlower · 27/09/2017 21:49

I would apply, giving examples of a project you have led on, or managed, any trainees or students you have been responsible for, or any non work management experience eg volunteering . Maybe mention any management qualifications or experience you would be keen to gain including a willingness to study. Nothing to lose except your time applying.

Moanyoldcow · 27/09/2017 21:53

I've never had all of the requirements in a JD, and have often been interviewed.

Current role was an £15k pay rise from prior job - considerably more senior and higher profile. I only had about 75% of requirements but they liked my cv and letter and felt I'd grow into the role. Which I have.

I'm my experience (also when recruiting) it's better to have room to grow otherwise you/the candidate will get bored.

CupcakeBabaPoo · 27/09/2017 22:00

Thank you all Smile I am definitely going to give it a shot then!

Moany - that is great about your role. Mine would be similar (about £10k more and more senior) so it's good to know it does happen.

In the UK it’s very rare for a responsible job holder not to have some kind of management experience. Chances are you have lots and lots of budget/resource/people and process management experience you can draw examples from.

Ameliablue · 27/09/2017 22:05

It depends if specific management experience is listed in the essential criteria.

CupcakeBabaPoo · 27/09/2017 22:14

Management experience is listed in the essential criteria.

Thanks Raving - I used to work in the emergency services so though I've never managed staff, I've had to manage some pretty volatile or emotional situations until more senior colleagues were able to take command (not because I couldn't but because that's protocol). I suppose in my current role I have to manage people everyday to get them to do things for me as my job depends totally on other people!

Yeah OP I figured you were in that kind of role. A VP (in finance) was in emergency services too (think fireman or paramedic not even a team leader) - got his senior role in banking off the strength of his leadership skills, ability to cope under pressure, and the frankly mindblowing way he got the relevant qualifications while putting his life on the line. The CEO took a punt on him and he’s delivered big time.

MumsOnCrack · 27/09/2017 22:21

Yes! Do it! You can only get it if you apply and lots of people - women ehrmmm - will assume they can't do it and not apply.

Go. For. It.

MumsOnCrack · 27/09/2017 22:22

No one who manages people in their new job (and is a first time manager) has managed people before...just saying!!

CupcakeBabaPoo · 27/09/2017 22:33

Raving - that's really good to hear, thank you. I like the leadership slant, I can probably think of a few examples.

Mums - thank you as well Smile

I will start my application in the morning and the worst thing that can happen is I don't get an interview.
