To ask how bad a root filling is?

silverking · 27/09/2017 20:22

I went to the dentist yesterday for the first time in eight years.

I need a root filling, to say that I am petrified is an understatement.

How bad is it?

I am too frightened to google.

It's not bad, but it takes much longer than a normal filling, and it's unpleasant having someone working in your mouth for that long.

Painful to the wallet, and the jaw may be a bit sore from stretching, but that's all. Flowers

Kochicoo · 27/09/2017 20:28

Funnily enough, my Mum had one today and I phoned her afterwards expecting her to say it was awful and she said it was absolutely fine.

Sienna333 · 27/09/2017 20:28

Had one and it was fine, no pain

Rightsaidmabel · 27/09/2017 20:29

It will be fine . you'll be numb, tired of having your mouth open and won't feel it.RELAX

Amanduh · 27/09/2017 20:29

It's not bad, won't hurt because you'll be numb. Takes a longer time so you can get jaw ache!

corlan · 27/09/2017 20:30

I'd agree that it's more painful to the wallet than anything else!

SoftSheen · 27/09/2017 20:31

It takes (typically) two one-hour sessions with your mouth open, and is £££. But it isn't painful, perhaps a bit uncomfortable afterwards.

silverking · 27/09/2017 20:32

The reason that I am so frightened is that the last filling I had really hurt as the tooth wouldn't go numb and the dentist didn't believe that I could feel it. It was a horrible pain and now I am worried that it will happen again.

A tooth requiring a root filling has a dead nerve so it is the sensation of drilling and stretching rather than pain.

BeeFarseer · 27/09/2017 20:39

I fell asleep during one once. If that's possible, it can't be anywhere near as bad as you're thinking, yes?

(I was warm, the chair was comfortable, soothing music was playing - I drifted off!)

Rheged · 27/09/2017 20:42

It will be fine. Tell your dentist about your previous bad experience and that you are frightened of feeling pain. If they are even half decent they will be sympathetic and be able to reassure you. My dentist always tells me to raise my hand if I am in pain and that he will stop immediately. Giving anaesthesia isn’t an exact science as some people metabolise painkillers quicker than others but your dentist should stop immediately and top up your pain relief.

silverking · 27/09/2017 20:42

My tooth has been acting up for about three weeks. Last week I woke in the night to the most horrendous toothache. Honestly it was probably the worst pain that I have ever experienced, yes I have had children!

You fell asleep Beef. That made me smile.

I had a root canal, post and crown. I swear it took 4 appointments in all, but the only pain I felt was the slight pain of the needle for the anaesthetic. And the cost was excruciating.

My face was totally frozen for hours afterwards, I remember going to drink some water and half of it just poured down my chin.

Ttbb · 27/09/2017 20:51

I had one. It was fine. But my denier was awesome, still miss that man-haveyberb able to find anyone quite as good.

silverking · 27/09/2017 20:52

Thankfully I am ok with needles so that bit doesn't bother me. I hadn't even thought about the cost but you lot are worrying me now. How much are we talking? Grin

My dentist told me if you wake in pain from a tooth, then the nerve is dying. So you won't feel much.

I dreaded a root canal. But honestly it was fine. I've had far worse fillings. You get a bit of a bleach smell, and lots of fiddling about, but not painful.

I did have an amazing dentist who specialises in root canal. ( I didn't know this at the time) had a post and crown put in. I think it was two appointments and ££, but all fine.

thethoughtfox · 27/09/2017 20:53

Absolutely no pain during or after. I couldn't believe it and had all sorts of nurofen ready but didn't need them

imoverlyengaged · 27/09/2017 20:53

It depends which tooth it is. The back ones have three or maybe four roots to drill and fill and are difficult to access - so my recollection is that it was really disagreeable at the time despite the anaesthetic and hurt like hell afterwards because the dentist had been yanking my jaw and cheek around to get the drill in. Hurt for several days tbh.

A root canal on a front tooth was fine.

silverking · 27/09/2017 20:54

Tt I want an awesome denier Grin

At least I'm smiling now.

MollyHuaCha · 27/09/2017 20:54

It was fine. I'd happily have another.

imoverlyengaged · 27/09/2017 20:54

Probably less painful than an extraction though.
